THIS SYSTEM IS OBSOLETE!

STOCKS ARE NOW EXHAUSTED. THIS PAGE IS FOR INFO ONLY.

The Handylink systems are used to send remote control signals back down the coaxial cable that feeds a second TV set to control whatever equipment is sending the picture and sound. It's ideal for Freeview terrestrial, Satellite, VCR and DVD. Fully screened coaxial cable is recommended but the system will often work with your existing cable. These are not wireless systems. These are NOT compatible with Triax-link or SkyLink (TV-link, Digilink, SLXlink etc.)

Unfortunately, Labgear went out of business and, although it was taken over by Philex, this is one of the (many) products that was discontinued. We have nothing compatible to offer that will work as part of this system.

Please take time to read the following information carefully. There's quite a lot to read all in one go so you might like to download the page and read it later. There are more remote extender systems on page 3.

Obsolete

Infra-red Remote Control extender kit MRX120

The handylink infra-red remote control extender is an easy and reliable way to control viewing from satellite decoders, set-top boxes, video or Hi-fi from another room in the home, without having to return to the living room.

Handylink uses the existing remote controls to operate satellite, cable, video or Hi-fi equipment from any room in the home by plugging into the existing TV coaxial cable. Anything that you can do via remote control in the living room can be done from a remote room equipped with this kit. The remote room TV must already be connected to the videoand satellite receiver by a coaxial cable distribution system. If there is no existing wired distribution system and a system with more than two outlets is required, then use handylink PRO (MRX270).

Features

  • handylink allows full control of all set-top equipment (VCR, satellite and digital TV)
  • handylink performs better than wireless or radio extenders because it uses the existing television
  • coaxial cable and is immune to interference
  • or jamming from neighbours' equipment, mobile phones, amateur radio etc.
  • handylink is compatible with most standard infra-red remote control systems
  • handylink is installed in minutes, full installation instructions included
  • handylink is suitable for analogue and digital signal distribution

This kit contains everything needed to extend the remote control system to one remote a room. An additional room may be added by using a handylink extra room extender kit (Product code MRX 110).

The MRX 120 kit contains a handylink base unit with two sender buttons, one remote receiver, TV coupler and flylead.

Extra Room Extender kit MRX110 is available separately to extend and enhance handylink remote control systems.

Can be used with either MRX120 handylink infra-red remote control extender kit, or MRX 270 handylink PRO kit. It allows remote control of VCR etc. from an additional remote location (e.g. a bedroom) using the distribution system wiring.

Features

  • can be used in conjunction with MRX120 kit
  • will allow operation of Skybox, ITV digital, VCR and DVD

Not to be confused with the similar looking MRX930 Digilink.

MRX270 Handylink PRO 4+1 UHF distribution amplifier with IR remote control facilities for up to 4 pieces of equipment.

Handylink PRO MRX270 is a complete TV & FM distribution system and infra-red remote control extender. It is a radical new concept in domestic distribution systems, specifically designed for TV, VCR, satellite and digital distribution.

Obsolete

Handylink PRO is also an infra-red remote control extender system, allowing the viewer to control their VCR, satellite and digital receiver from any connected room, using a normal infra-red remote control handset. handylink PRO can also distribute FM radio signals. Handylink PRO complements the handylink infra-red remote control extender product which is intended for retro-fitting to an existing distribution system. handylink PRO is straightforward to install. The entire system is powered from a single point near the main TV.

The handylink PRO kit contains most of the components needed to install a working system. Aerials, cable and non-isolated outlet plates need to be added. One power supply runs the whole 4-way system. The separate distribution unit does not require a mains supply and can be installed almost anywhere (e.g. in the loft or in a cupboard) for convenience in cabling. Previously a two-way splitter would be used after the VCR to feed the main TV and a separate 4-way amplifier.

With the handylink PRO, the amplifier gain is split between the base and distribution units, eliminating noise degradation caused by the splitter and cable losses ahead of the amplifier. An FM aerial can be connected to the distribution unit to provide radio at all 4 outlets (not at the main TV outlet) with approx. 0dB overall gain. One Receiver and Coupler are supplied in the kit.

To equip additional rooms for remote control extension simply add one or more MRX110 extra room extender kits. An earth bonding terminal on the distribution unit allows connection of bonding for compliance with BS EN 50083-1.

Isolated outlets cannot be used in this system because the infra-red receivers are line-powered.

Features

  • Compatible with the majority of pulse-or carrier-based infra-red remote control systems
  • Control and view most set-top equipment
  • All outputs are infra-red enabled
  • Supplied as a convenient kit 1
  • Optimum gain distribution
  • Loss-free FM distribution
  • Single point powering
  • Flexibility in layout

See wiring layouts below

This system requires one MRX270 handylink PRO kit and two MRX110 extra room kits.

This diagram shows a typical installation of handylink PRO, including FM radio.

Handylink PRO System Components are:

  • Base Unit
  • Distribution Unit
  • Extra room Kit MRX110

The MRX110 "eyes" accept standard Infra Red signals from any remote in any room and pass them via the distribution amplifier unit to the MRX990 senders.

The MRX990 button senders retransmit these Infra Red signals to any equipment.

The base unit has two sockets so two pairs of MRX990 senders can be connected to control four pieces of equipment (more if you place a sender so that it can "see" more than one piece of equipment).

ALL pieces of equipment to be controlled must be near to the base unit so that the MRX990 wires will reach.

The MRX110 "eyes" can be scattered throughout the building.

Obsolete

Distribution Unit

The central wiring point for the four outlets and contains a second amplifier. It has provision for connection of an FM radio antenna (optional). It may be installed in any convenient location (e.g. roof space) and has provision for earth bonding. No mains supply required.

Obsolete

Base Unit

This component is located near the VCR and main TV. It contains a signal amplifier and the central system power supply. An output is provided for the main TV, avoiding the need for further splitters. It requires a mains supply, and is supplied with a fitted plug.

Obsolete

Extra room kit MRX110

Comprises receiver and coupler. Can be used on any outlet from the distribution unit. Allows remote control of VCR etc. from any remote location (e.g. a bedroom) using the distribution system wiring.

Features

• Transparent to IF signals

• Easy connection via 3.5mm jack socket

Obsolete

Sender kit MRX990 (OBSOLETE)

Used to add third and fourth remotely controlled devices to the system e.g. a second VCR, satellite receiver, Hi-fi system or set-top box. The sender buttons are fixed to the front of the device and relay the infra-red remote control commands. Each sender lead has two sender buttons and can relay commands to two devices. The base units of both the MRX120 handylink infra-red and the MRX270 handylink PRO kit have two jack sockets to drive two pairs of senders and thus control up to four devices remotely.

Sender kit MRX990 (a pair of additional stick on IR senders)

CHARACTERISTICS

  • Number and configuration of emitters: two in series
  • Peak emission wavelength: 940 mm
  • Connector: 3.5 mm mono jack plug
  • Pack Size- mm: 335(H) x 225(W) x 60(D)

Technical information

The MRX930 infra-red receiver, (Labgear Digilink), works on the Sky Digibox system whereby the data from the infra-red remote control is modulated onto a 6MHz carrier signal.

The MRX110 infra-red receiver, (Labgear Handylink), works with the Labgear MRX150 base unit supplied with the MRX120 Infra-Red Remote Control Extender Kit and relays the data transmitted from the infra-red remote control by modulating current.

> Do the HandyLink devices co-exist with the Sky & Sky+ coax
> signalling mechanism?

Yes the MRX150 base unit supplied with the MRX120 will also pass the sky 6MHx return signal.

> And further, do the Handylink devices interoperate with the Sky &
> Sky+ coax signalling mechanism?

Yes see above

> Do their "magic eyes" generate signals which Sky/Sky+ will listen to?

The MRX930 Digilink infra-red receiver is designed to work with sky boxes directly.
The MRX110 Handylink is not.

> Do Sky/Sky+ magic eyes generate signals which their
> receiver/breakout units will bridge to IR, e.g. for my DVD?

No, use MRX110 infra-red receiver and then use the senders supplied with the MRX120 Kit to control DVD's etc.

> And do the Handylink signals make it through signal amplifiers,
> which are already equiped to let Sky / Sky+ coax signals through?

Amplifiers need to have a return path which can operate from DC to ~70KHz. Sky operates at ~6MHz, so the answer is probably no.
