problem | Component kits for the Book by Charles Platt List of Electronic Kits by book chapter Make: Electronics. Learning Through Discovery (Paperback) Want to learn the fundamentals of electronics in a fun, hands-on way? With Make: Electronics, you'll start working on real projects as soon as you crack open the book. Explore all of the key components and essential principles through a series of fascinating experiments. You'll build the circuits first, then learn the theory behind them! Build working devices, from simple to complex You'll start with the basics and then move on to more complicated projects. Go from switching circuits to integrated circuits, and from simple alarms to programmable microcontrollers. Step-by-step instructions and more than 500 full-color photographs and illustrations will help you use -- and understand -- electronics concepts and techniques. Read more information CHAPKIT1 all parts for Chapter 1 CHAPKIT2 all parts for Chapter 2 CHAPKIT3 Most parts for Chapter 3 More Parts for Chapter 3 Below is a list of items that you can choose from. Most of these parts are listed above but some aren't, so you might like to add them to your order or order them separately. The "Continue Shopping" button in the shopping cart will bring you back here to the item you just selected. The items, below, marked with an asterisk * are NOT in the kit, above, but may be required if you don't already have them. Notes: Soldering iron I've been soldering for 50 years and I disagree with the book statement: "The 15-watt size is desirable for the small-scale work you'll be doing, and greatly reduces the risk of damaging components by inflicting excess heat." In my experience it's best to use a hot iron, which, with practice, lets you make a joint quickly and efficiently, with less risk of a dry joint. I normally use a Weller iron with a number 8 (430°C) bit! Solder Tin-lead solder is much easier to use than lead-free and, provided that you don't swallow it or continually lick your fingers while handling it, will do you no harm. The number of lead atoms floating in the air during soldering is immeasurably small. The real danger is from the flux (which is usually more aggressive in lead-free solder). Avoid breathing flux fumes. If you are asthmatic, you should probably install an extractor fan to keep contaminated air moving away from you. #solset * Soldering Set Complete soldering set includes. Omega 63/37 tin/lead, 2% non-rosin Flux, Fast Flow Solder 22swg 500g reel Ball-jointed crocodile clips on a stand with magnifying lens. Use it to hold small objects or printed circuit boards while you work on them. Mini Vice with 60mm jaw opening. This is a lightweight, hollow diecasting. It's great for holding things steady and you can clamp it to the kitchen table - remove it when you are finished. This oxidises quickly so you should keep it inside a sealed "ziplock" plastic bag, or similar, with as much air as possible sucked out. That way it should last for months instead of weeks, if you don't use it often. (Photo for illustration only.) Twin cable PVC insulated. Although the cable sheath is white, one wire has a black stripe to distinguish it. 12 strands 0.1mm copper wire. Sold on 100m reel or in cut lengths up to 30m. Rated at 1 Amp. Pack of Five leads approx 420mm long with insulated clips fitted. Pack of Ten test probe hooks. You can solder them to multistrand insulated wire i order to make test leads. 34-0505 Perforated copper stripboard 64 x 95mm £0.99 Ideal for heatshrink sleeving, stripping paint, lifting vinyl tiles, defrosting pipes, bending plastic, etc. (May differ from picture.) Red and black posts with solder pin. 5.5mm O/D and 2.5mm I/D plug with solder tags and 10mm shaft. 5.5mm bore and 2.5mm pin with solder tags. Door/Window switch for house alarm Double Lens Pocket Glass Magnifier (loupe) Battery box with on-off switch and clip-on cover. Holds 4 x AA battery cells. Battery clip, with wires, for PP3 and PP6 batteries. Black anodised aluminium knob 16 mm diameter with grub screw and indicator notch. 1/4" (6.3mm) hole for spindle.
