Twin-output LNB

We've acquired a small number of twin-output LNBs which we're offering at only £19.95 each. These are suitable for fitting to most standard dishes (not Sky minidish).

We are now able to offer replacement battery covers for Sky Digibox remotes at only 95p!

Our tubes of silicone grease have been supplemented by "economy-size" tubs (not tubes) which hold enough to do a couple of jobs without breaking the bank.

Sky Remote Conflict

Can the Sky remote control the volume output from the Sky digibox other than through the sound settings menu.

No.

The reason I ask is that I recently bought a cheap Bush Freeview PVR and some of the remote commands clash with my Sony TV. I could put up with this but for the fact that volume up on Sony/Sky remote causes the Bush PVR to change channel. This is a real pain since the volume output from the PVR is much lower than the Sky digibox and so you nearly always want to turn up the volume when first using the PVR.

Curiously, the Bush remote does not affect the TV. Volume up on Sony corresponds to channel down on Bush but not vice versa. With this in mind I tried all the Sky remote codes for Sony in the hope I could find one that did not change channels on the PVR but the only ones that did not also did not control the TV volume.

Any suggestions?

Buy a different PVR.

There's only one choice of Sky remote (well, two if you count the SKY+ model) so you have to choose other equipment that doesn't conflict.

Osteopath

As some of you will know, I've been slightly incapacitated by a torn ligament in my lumbar spine. This is now almost healed and I'm working normally again. However, while I was spending most of my time horizontal, I took the opportunity to create a new web site and discussion forum for my osteopath. As you will know, nobody wants to be the first to post in an almost empty forum so I would be most grateful if some of you would do just that! If you click on this link: http://www.osteopaths.uk.com then click on the "Self Help" button, you'll get to the forum. Please sign up and post a question or, if you have ever been helped by an osteopath, tell your story in the appropriate section.

If you happen to live in South Cheshire or the "Potteries", you could post in the "Local" section, too!

APSI reborn

The Association of Professional Satellite Installers web site has been off-line for a while. It has now been reconstructed and offers a fixed price (no surprises) installation anywhere in the UK.

http://www.ukapsi.com/

It may not seem cheap initially but you get a professional job - read what it says on the site. Recommend it to your friends if you like it. (No, I'm not on commission).

Christmas Closing 2005

We will close Friday 23rd at 5pm and re-open on the 2nd of January. However, Martin is a workaholic and will be around to answer your questions most of the time.

Remember that post can be slow in December so place your orders as early as possible! There will be no despatches on the 23rd.

Have a good time. Take care on the roads.

Noisy SKY+ fan

Dear Martin,

As an upgrade for Sky+ the Samsung Spinpoint V120CE 250GB IDE ATA/133 2MB 5400RPM drive also has the advantage of being exceptionally quiet. No need to mess around with any 'Accoustic management' settings as with some others. However, since upgrading my Pace BSKYB3100 Sky+ to 250 Gb the cooling fan now runs constantly. I was aware that this might occur but am concerned that, should it fail when no one is about, there may be a fire hazard. It is also a bit intrusive in a quiet room when watching TV.

Am I worrying unecessesarily, and are you aware of a fix?

If I simply just have to live with it and it is safe - fine. I will then probably buy a spare from you as a back-up, since I believe it is an easy replacement

Best wishes

David

There's no fix apart from fitting the correct disc drive with the temperature sensor built-in.

Most fans last several years so I doubt it will be a problem. Just keep it free from dust.

One thing you could try is fitting a low value resistor in one of the fan wires to slow it down a little. This would reduce the noise and make it last longer. Since the fan is on constantly, it doesn't need to run at full speed. A resistor of between 56 Ohms and 150 Ohms will probably do the job.

Dear Martin, Many thanks for the fan and the advice. I fitted a 56 Ohm resister in the live wire and an extension of equal length in the neutral, covered the joins with heat resistant shielding (the braid type), and now the fan runs much more slowly and totally unobtrusively even in a quiet room. I would imagine that the cooling is still sufficient since this drive supposedly runs quite cool anyway, and since I don't use the instant rewind facility the drive is only running when recording or playing back and not all the while the machine is out of standby I will let you know if I get any problems, but in the meantime you can report the success to anyone else who asks.

Thanks again

David

Are you over 50?

Some of you may be aware of Sam Radford's satellite TV information site at http://www.sam-radford.me.uk

Well - nothing to do with satellite TV - Sam has asked me to point out that he now has a discussion forum for over 50s. He tells me "Martin, like you, I am a Yorkshireman and have a pet hate of poorly written English. I noticed a lack of forums where intelligent adults can discuss things without being interrupted by youngsters who use "txt-spk" and haven't a clue how to spell or punctuate their sentences. So I make no secret of the fact that my new discussion forum is for older people who can handle their own native language! There is NO satellite TV section in the forum as I don't plan to compete with you on that. However, new topics can be added on request."

So, when you get bored at Christmas, pop along to Sam's forum and have a chat! Who will be first?

Happy Customers

Hello Martin,

I purchased and recieved the Installing Sky Digital TV ebook which was any easy transaction with a good instruction for download etc. Unfortunatly I have read this book and do not accept it is worth the £9.34. I feel this is due to the fact that most of the information is freely available on your website and so I fail to see where the extra charge is justified. I guess i am saying that your website has far to much information available free of charge and I expected much more for a book of ~£10

I would be keen to hear your comments.

Regards,

Dave Tansley

Actually, I would be keen to have other customers' comments. Are Dave's views correct and fair? Should I remove all the free information from my web site? Am I charging too much for compiling information into a form which is easy to read and print out or do you think it's worth more? Should I give the eBooks away for free and, if I do, how should I fund that? Bear in mind it costs me quite a lot of money just for the server that holds the eBooks for download (around £400 + VAT per year for the reliable server which I've just moved the eBooks to). It also takes time to compile and check the eBooks and to keep them up to date.

What do you think? Please put your comments in the discussion forum. You'll find the thread under "I want a refund" in the "Customer Feedback" section.

Regarding Customer receipt (Keep-me): ECH02.

Hello, may I just say, I ordered my item (Powermid XL) Sunday afternoon (11th) and I have received it this morning!!!! Credit to you guys - I would have expected it after Christmas next year, never less than two days after I made the order!!

Next, with ref to the Powermid XL, after ordering it I realised that these are only designed to work one way.ie you transmit into one and it repeats to the receiver. I have a Sony decoder/ampllifier which you transmit to the amp from the remote, the amp then sends back to the remote the available options/settings and you then make your choice and send it back to the amp.

To my supprise they work both ways!!!! Fantastic.....Thank you guys WELL DONE

One very very happy customer.....Merry Christmas too.

Erm, they do work in only one direction.

Martin

My order SA30809051451 was intact and on time.

I received your eMail to check everything was OK and could not believe your after sales service.

Thank you for caring.

Steve C.

Despite the rumours, we do care, actually. :-)
