Monthly Whinge

Customers!

When a customer places an order, how do I entice him/her to read our email acknowledgement? I know customers DON'T read it because they hardly ever claim the £1 discount voucher that is listed near the end of the message. Nor do they complete the 30 second feedback form. (C'mon, it's only 30 seconds!)

Also - I've mentioned this previously - when a potential customer writes for advice, why don't they say "thanks? I make this very easy to do by providing a link they can simply click. No need even to type a word. But most people don't acknowledge my reply. It can be heart-breaking to spend 20 minutes researching a reply and not even know whether the recipient read it.

In this regard, did you read your email notification for this blog? It contains two links to Special Offers pages, which are available only till Monday evening, because I don't want to overload the server. Click on the links right away! (I've repeated the links, below under "New Products", in case you didn't receive the email.)

Gaelic?

Anyone who happens to live in Scotland, and likes to use Freeview to listen to BBC radio in the evenings, will be subject to a restricted service because the BBC has reassigned the bandwidth in order to impose a Gaelic TV station upon the population, even in the many areas of Scotland where the Gaelic was never spoken. So in Scotland it is not possible to make recordings during those times. More discussion on this can be found at http://www.radioandtelly.co.uk/cgi-bin/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1308159751

The ongoing saga of 1and1 Internet. Honestly, I wouldn't recommend this company to my worst enemy!

Oh, and I keep receiving spam mail addressed to a unique email address. Guess what? It's the one I use ONLY for my 1and1 account. So this wonderful company is divulging their customers' email addresses for spammers to use. (There is no other explanation. None of my other email addresses has been compromised and ONLY this company knows the email address.)

Hello Martin,

You wrote about trying to get in touch with 1and1 to cancel your service. You wrote you cannot call 0844 numbers from abroad.

I would like to offer a solution.

There is a web site called www.saynoto0870.com. I heard about it on Radio 2.

If you 'search to find an alternative number' for '1and1' you will find geographic telephone numbers you can call.

I hope this helps.

Best wishes,

Terry.

Thanks Terry and to everyone else who suggested this. '1and1' merely kept insisting that I phoned their 0844 number. I mentioned it as an illustration of their stupidity. I'm perfectly aware that they have other numbers but they didn't offer me any. However, as I stated, I already cancelled by letter AND received an acknowledgement (twice).

Geocaching on Crete

You've never heard of "geocaching"? It's a kind of treasure hunt. In its simplest form, you obtain destination coordinates of a "cache" and punch them into your GPS device. This leads you to the "cache", which usually consists of a container with a notebook and one or more interesting items. You write comments in the notebook and replace it. You may also swap one of the items in the box for another of similar value.

Sounds interesting? Well, thousands of people engage in this activity around the world and, to many, it's addictive.

If you combine it with the gorgeous summer weather, lovely views and terrain of Crete, with the promise of a Cretan supper afterwards, does it sound better?

For those who are interested, I'm planning to create new "caches" here on western Crete, in interesting locations, and to publish the coordinates. I'll try to be available to meet people (on request) and to guide them to start locations, tavernas or wherever. Most locations will be "family friendly". A few may be "difficult". Contact me if you are interested or have suggestions.

Hi Martin,

It might have been suggested before, but here goes.....

I read about folk with RF2 distribution of TV signals from a Skybox and having potentially a problem in the future finding TV sets with analog input. One solution might be to feed the RF signal into an old Video recorder tuned to the RF2 frequency and then connecting it to the digital TV with a Scart cable (assuming they at least continue with Scart inputs for a while!). The video doesn't have to work properly, just the record tuner needs to work. I bet you could pick up such a machine at a car boot sale for pennies. An old DVD recorder with analog tuner should work too and maybe physically smaller.

Hi Martin.

Thank you for another entertaining and useful newsletter.

One of this month's readers asked you a question regarding apparently missing V signals on an Invacom twin LNB.

I install & repair in the Algarve & have come across this quite a lot, particularly with 'Invacom' and 'Alps' LNBs. I use a Horizon HDSM meter and it appears to be very fussy about the frequency of the incoming signal. A lot more fussy than a satellite receiver with a bit of AFC. Therefore if the LNB's LO is slightly 'out' the meter will indicate the presence of a signal, but it won't lock. A 'fitter' (as opposed to an engineer) may mis-interpret this as 'no signal'. I confirmed this theory using my HDSM V3 meter, on which you can enter the desired frequency manually. A few MHz down from the published transponder frequency & it locked in no problem. And saved a serviceable LNB from the scrapheap!

I remember an article you published a year or more ago on unusual dish installations. Well, I see a lot of them here (I have even been known to do some myself!), I'll be happy to send you some pictures.

Keep up the good work, I admire your patience!

Kind regards, Trevor.

I thanked Trevor by email - twice - and said "yes, please" to pictures, but he hasn't replied. Are you reading this, Trevor? Hope you are OK. See "contact me" link, below.

Metronic Transparent Dish Modification

Dear Martin,

As requested I am uploading a few photos for your perusal.

The process went well but, if you look carefully, there's a difference between the arm on the Metronic dish arm and the arm of the Orbital dish whose LNB bracket I bought from you.

Because of this the signal wasn't good enough. To fix this I had to bring the LNB forward by drilling a new hole further back from the original one and tilted the angle upwards by putting two washers under the front of the bracket before tightening.

By doing this I managed to achieve a 70% signal quality. Enough to run the box adequately, although thick thunder clouds kill it shortly before the Astra II signal on the main arm is lost.

Lining it up was really basic. Just moving it slowly along whilst watching the TV on the ground. I have to say the sat signal meter I had I found next to useless. I did try to do it with this first.

Your shotgun cable replaced the original TV cable that had been run in a conduit. The spare second cable I attached to a broken down aerial as much just to keep it out of the way. Surprisingly I then was able to tune in to 5 digital channels when previously there was nothing with the original terrestrial cable. Your adage about junction boxes and quality of cable came true again!

All that for DISH12 multi LNB holder 14 degrees Qty:1 at £6.95

I only need this. The extra LNB holder was ordered just in case. Good value I say. Thank you for your help and advice over the years. I would never have had the courage to attempt the installations I have with out your ebooks and blogs.

New Products

Not a new product but I thought I should mention that I have updated our guide to installing (and fault-finding) a Sky Link "magic eye". You can get it (free) by right-clicking here.

We are now offering low-cost extension leads made with RG6 coaxial cable and with or without 'F' plugs fitted. RG6 has a soft aluminium foil screen, and air-spaced plastic dielectric insulator, making it very flexible. We don't recommend it for outdoor use (because it tends to corrode in damp places) but it is perfectly adequate for indoors.

For one day only...

... till 8pm 10pm Monday*

Some people complained that they don't get home till after 8pm so I have extended the deadline for them.

"The Red Button"

Hello,

It's Wimbledon Week and every year my wife is hard at "work" watching it. Every year the commentator Sue Barker tells the viewer that viewers can watch other matches by "pressing the Red Button" and yet on my flat screen TV's the red button does not always work for this particular task and not does the blue button if one can get that far in. Now I tried my son's Samsung TV with the same result. I also have two Humax Freesat boxes all these units do not give me the extra stations on channel 301 or wherever they are located.

Question: Is the fault at my end or at the BBC? I had a theory that if too many viewers try the red button then the strength is sapped. Is this true?

Nice one. You almost had me believing this was a genuine enquiry. ;-)

(I think my strength is being sapped by too many people pushing my button!)

If this is a genuine enquiry, then I'll hazard a guess that Freesat receivers don't support the button press by switching to the relevant "stream", as Sky Digiboxes do. Anyone know?

Hi, today the sky "engineer" replaced my faulty sky+ hd box, which I have had for over a year, with a new one. I am currently on the sky insurance plan that costs about 8 pounds per month. I asked if I could keep the old one but was told it doesn't work like that and he had to take the old one. Is he right?

It's almost the same as a shop replacing a faulty TV but there is one vital difference:

What is happening is that the Sky installer is taking away your Digibox and effectively a dozen DVDs from your video library as well. I.e. you paid for some recorded programmes but you may not have watched them.

However, your remedy is simple. Write to Sky (note the word "write" not "phone"), explain your loss in the simplest terms (listing the programmes not watched, as far as you can remember), and ask for compensation. At their discretion, they may offer you, for example, half price movies for a limited period, or similar. If you prefer sports to movies, you could even (politely) suggest a limited period sports package as compensation. This costs Sky nothing but it's obviously valuable to you.

Hi, I've bought a sky HD box off eBay and I'll be replacing my existing Sky+ box with it. I don't subscribe to any movies or sport. Can you tell me what channels I would get in HD without paying the extra subscription to Sky?

Yes, you'll get BBC HD, BBC One HD, ITV1 HD, Channel 4 HD, Channel 5 HD and NHK World HD. You'll have to get your existing viewing card activated in the HD Digibox. Once you've done that, you won't be able to watch any encrypted recordings on the Sky+ Digibox, so make sure there's nothing you want to keep!

Amstrad DRX895 Sky+HD 1TB box.

Hi, my TV is an ordinary CRT type with Scart inputs. (I can't afford an HDTV this year). I've been offered the DRX895 for free but I don't know if it has connections for my TV.

Earlier Sky Digiboxes had two SCART connectors. The second one fed video and audio (composite video only) to a VCR, and also to allowed loop-through playback from the VCR to the TV via the TV SCART. (It actually looped RGB through too!) This second SCART is missing from the DRX895, and replaced with a phono socket composite video output, which can be used to feed a recorder in association with the L + R phono audio outputs, which were present on the older Digiboxes, too.

Many older Digiboxes also had an s-video output socket, which is missing from the DRX895.

The only extra connectivity on the DRX895 is that it has a phono digital audio output as well as the TOSLINK optical connector.

We need a TV aerial for our caravan, and after reading all your information I think that we need a Vision V10-040, but we will need a pole and fixing for the caravan. Can you help us find the right combination please?

Equipment made by: Thomson
Model number on label or rear panel: DSI8215

Hi the Sky plus box has lost some of its channels. The signal strength and quality bars are around 70%. I have switched the canles from the dish around and the signal bars remain the same, but still does not have all the channels.

I found an article that said it is likely the PSU in the receiver and that you can supply these.

Terry D.

Yes, as stated on our web site, we can exchange your PSU for a rebuilt one, or provide a DIY repair kit, or you can take/send your Digibox to an independent repairer.

Equipment made by: Technomate
Model number on label or rear panel: none

can u help please, I have a caravan in St. Jean De Monts in the Vendee Western France, and have a Technomate Free to Air receiver and dish but the signal is not very good plus whenever it rains or is windy we lose the signal, could you recommend a better quality dish and lnb and if so would this improve the signal, i cannot remember what size dish it is but think either 50 or 60 cm but the complete package was purchased from Brymar Satellite a few years ago, Many Thanks, Mike

michael p.

Hi, Michael. I guess that you probably need an 80cm dish. Towards the Spanish border, a 90cm dish would be better.

I think you should be safe with the Triax dish, here:
http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/triax_TD88_dish.htm

With a twin- or quad-output LNB as desired:
http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page1a.htm#quad

Make sure your cable is up to scratch, too:
http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/cable.htm

I am thinking of purchasing a pvr. I have a sky dish but my sky digibox has packed up, so I need another receiver to take the sky freeview card and a recording device. I found your web site but it might be old and there is no way of telephoning you to check if you are still operating. Please reply so that it will give me confidence in trading with you.

harvey b.

Hi, Harvey.

Which web site were you looking at?
You can speak to me using "Skype" by clicking on the "Call me" button, on our home page:

There is no such thing as a "sky freeview card". (Freeview is the UK terrestrial service, which requires an aerial but no card.)

For a Sky Digibox you can use:

  • 1. A Sky subscription card.
  • 2. A FreesatFromSky card (about £20 one-off)
  • 3. An expired Sky subscription card or
  • 4. No card at all.

However, without a subscription, no Sky PVR will record.

Alternatively, you could buy a "Freesat" PVR, which requires no card and lets you record all non-subscription channels.

See http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page14.htm

(No response. I guess he's still lacking confidence!)

Equipment made by: Humax Freesat
Model number on label or rear panel: 9300 Freeview

I have fitted RELKIT70 to my Humax Foxsat and removed all the OE CAPXON capacitors and all works very well. However I notice my working Humax 9300 has all six OE CAPXON capacitors in its PSU. Should I be worried and think about replacing them, are most CAPXON capacitors of suspect quality?

Many thanks

Gerald G.

Hi, Gerald. In our opinion, yes.

I'm not familiar with the Humax 9300. Will RELKIT70 do or will you need a new/different kit?

Equipment made by: Pace Sky
Model number on label or rear panel: new sky hd + box?

Hi Just got a sky system and have found it takes two cables going into it. Obviously 1 for recording another channel. But I need to take my box away with me and run it from a dish with a single cable feed. Will it still work (without he need to record , which I,m not bothered about)or will i need some sort of device.

Thanks Adrian C.

Yes, there's a menu option for single input mode.

Model number on label or rear panel: Fortec Star FS-4200

Hi. I have a Fortec Star free sat. system (65cm dish) currently with one LNB pointed at Astra 2D (28.2 E). I would like to be able to also receive Astra 1L at 19.2 E.

I believe this is possible by using a second LNB and by using the weaker Astra 1L signal as primary satellite and bouncing the stronger 2D signal onto the second LNB.

Please could you let me know what I need to buy in order to do this and whether you can supply it!

I am happy to run two cables down from the satellite to the receiver box but am a little unsure as to how they fit together and into the one LNB terminal I have in the back of the box.

Many thanks for your help.

Anthony

Hi, Anthony. We don't sell Fortec equipment so I can't give you specific answers. (We used to stock it but it was cheap and nasty.)

Anyway, you'll need an LNB bracket to suit your dish. We stock various brackets for the dishes we sell. I don't know how easy it would be to make one fit your dish. A 65cm dish in Hereford should be OK to use two LNBs with a 10 degree separation, although you may experience signal loss in bad weather.

You'll also need a 40mm neck universal LNB.

You'll need a DiSEqC switch (assuming that your FS-4200 has DiSEqC support - I expect it has but you don't say).

We stock all of these parts, plus the cable, connectors and clips.

See typical installation http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/page9.htm

Hi,

I am doing a diy upgrade from sky to sky+.I am confused which quad lnb to buy.My dish is quite old and has a rectangular mounting arm.The measurements of the arm are as follows.Inner 10mm x 23mm.Outer 12mm x 25mm.

Do you sell a lnb to suit this dish?

Many regards.

Dave.

Hi, Dave. Did you check the picture on our Quad LNB page? That sounds like the old Channel Master dish.

I'm told that the MK4 LNB (with its own adapter - not the optional extra one) should fit. But you'll have to drill a hole and put a bolt through.

See http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/quad_sky_lnb.htm

Hi Martin, I have an original type 1 Sky Minidish and single Grundig LNB, I have bought a Humax Freesat recorder and was planning on adding a quad LNB, but now find that the original arms are much smaller than current ones. I see from your forum that you told someone you may have some original Quads but that was back in 2009 so I guess they have gone.

My Question is, do you supply anything that i can fit that would allow me to keep the original dish, and more importantly its alignment, or do i need to buy a second dish with quad attached, and spend a merry hour or two trying to find Astra?

Thanks for your time, apologies if this is already answered in the FAQ.

Cheers.

Andy W.

Hi, Andy. As stated on our Quad LNB page, the new MK4 LNB ought to fit OK but you'll have to drill a hole for a bolt and/or use cable ties to secure it over the arm - saddle fashion.

(Same page link as previous question.)

I would like to order your 15m CAT6 patch cable for £7.99 but the only delivery option is a very expensive £9.99 next day courier. Is there any other shipping option, a less expensive one?

Thanks

Hi, Rupert. The cart is only able to provide an estimate based on a full reel. I suggest you place your order and add "PROVISIONAL - please quote lowest postage cost and await approval" or similar. Sales will work out the true cost for you.

There are two cuts in my cable due to vandalism, and since I had a local installer do the job I have begun to realise he didn't do such a good job. To this end, I have a builder friend who has all of the correct safety equipment and is prepared to help me replace the cable with a decent one such as WF100. It is not easy for me to see the aerial from the ground, but it looks to be quite compact. Would a change of aerial be of any benefit while the cable is being replaced?

Thanks.

Kevin T.

Hi, Kevin. Much as I'd love to sell you a new aerial, I have to be honest and tell you that your current aerial should be fine.

The only reason for changing it would be that it was damaged or that water had gone inside the connection box and corroded the connections. See picture on this page:

http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/silicone.htm#dish

If you find that you do need to change it, you might consider a V10- aerial.

Hi,

I came across your website and would like some info on the

Humax FOXSAT-HDR PVR 320GB for BBC/ITV Freesat-Plus

Can you please provide a full channel list being aired at the moment?

Yes, see http://www.freesat.co.uk/what-you-get/our-channels

If I understood correctly, the system works using a satellite dish and other normal equipment such as the LNB. Will I be able to use this in Malta?

Yes if you can receive the signals. Freesat broadcasts from the same fleet of satellites (Astra 28.2°E and Eurobird 1) as Sky. Channels are broadcast using DVB-S.

What about the satellite dish & LNBs? Are there any particular requirements or can be any?

Use a universal LNB with as many outputs as required by the receiver(s). A Freeview PVR has two inputs, for example, so you can record one channel while watching another.

Judging by the Eurobird footprint, here
http://www.lyngsat-maps.com/maps/eb1_fixed.html

you'll need a 1.5m dish to get the EPG (Electronic Programme Guide) signal.

You'll receive *some* of the programmes, too.

However, judging from the maps for Astra 2D
http://www.satcure.co.uk/2d/

you'll need a 4, 5 or maybe 6 metre dish to receive ALL the Freesat channels.

This is, however, only theory, so you should check with other British expats to determine their practical experiences with whatever equipment they have.

(No response.)

Hi,

I have a sky hd box and wish to add a freesat pvr hd box, and run both from the same dish, which has a quad lnb. Basically I need to run two more cables from the dish and was wondering if you could suppy the cables I need and the correct connectors (ready fitted if possible) the cables need to be about 20 metres long.

Please let me know if you can help, price etc

Cheers,

Adam

Hi, Adam. Yes, we supply WF100 dish extension leads. A normal 10mm hole through the wall won't allow the plug to pass but, if you order cable with screw-on connectors, you can unscrew them to pass cable through the hole, then refit the plugs.

See http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/cable.htm#extension

Equipment made by: Amstrad Sky
Model number on label or rear panel: DX550

Maybe DRX550 ?

Please can you help me. My Son bought me a new HD ready TV (I don't have Sky HD just the regular Sky box) but now my TV link remote eye upstairs does not work anymore.

According to the Sky box the RF2 outlet is on but the TV link red light is not on.

I don't know what to do next, please help

Regards

Barbara

Hi, Barbara. You don't state how your "eye" is connected to upstairs.

You don't state WHERE you have put your new TV. If it is upstairs with the "eye" plugged into it, unplug the "eye" from the TV and see if you can get the red light to come on.

Please try unplugging the "eye" from the TV. Check the Digibox menu again to make sure the RF Outlet power is still ON. Reboot the Digibox if the light still isn't on. Check that the lead is connected to RF2 (not RF1). If the light comes on, reconnect the "eye" to the TV. DO NOT connect it directly. Use a fly-lead.

If that doesn't help, please download and read our instructions:
http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/tvlink2.htm

The problem cause is probably something simple but you have to follow logical steps to find it.

(No response.)

Good afternoon,

I have read that you do not normally supply twin Sat cable in more than 20 metre lengths. However, I am particularly keen to get 23 metres brown twin (I believe WF100), which is difficult to obtain locally.

Are you willing/able to supply this length as part of an order that will include additional items, e.g. screened double wall box, clips, internal extension cables.

It's difficult for the girls to handle but you could place an order and add a "pretty please" in the shopping cart Notes.

(No response or order.)

Can i run WF100 satellite coaxial cable through loft space?

Hi, Peter.

I see no reason why you shouldn't run cable through your loft, provided that you have access and are physically capable.

If i can will signal be worse?

Worse than what? As you have probably read on our web site, WF100 is one of the better cables, losing around 0.29dB per metre at the highest LNB frequency and around 0.16dB/m at the highest UHF frequency. Whether this will have a significant effect on reception is dependent on the total length, the signal strength at the start and your usage.

If you have a more specific question, I'd be happy to try to answer it.

See http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/cable.htm

Hi

We have a Pace (BSKYB 2500N) which is used in our Motorhome.

The "Box" when connected shows the RED (power?) light but will not turn "Green" (ie "boot up") either by use of the front pannel mounted switch NOR the "remote". (Nor will the VCR which used to work through the "scart"(s) output, but will if connected directly)

Substituting the "house" box gets a fully functioning system.

At this time I am assuming that the PSU (may) be faulty. If you concur can you advise cost of:-

1) Replacement PSU OR 2) neccessary parts to refurbish same? which I understand are available?

The "box" is quite elderly,(@ 2001)and to be fair is probably not worth spending very much money on. BUT has proved useful and does mean not having to transfer the "house" unit to the motorhome when we go away.

If you feel some other part may be defective then your advises would be apreciated?

Kind regards

Peter H.

Hi, Peter. My advice is to recycle it and buy a more modern, used Sky Digibox. Many people are throwing them away or selling in the local paper, or on eBay, for a tenner, so it won't be expensive.

Later models are also smaller and won't take up as much room.

I bought a V40-104 modulator and was surprised it had only one audio input. (I know it can only handle mono modulation!)

Should I have bought the A05458 scart to phono cable with it? Will this combine the L and R channels into the one audio input?

That is my understanding.
http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page4.htm#rfmod

Otherwise, how would you recommend combining the L and R signals? I can handle soldering a resistive passive combiner if that's what is needed. If this is the recommended route, what value of resistors would you suggest?

That should work OK. The audio input impedance isn't specified but I'd guess that 1k should do.

Hopefully there won't be too much attenuation, the audio output on the HD box is already 8db below the rest of my modulated kit.

Yes, and they've removed the adjustment. A real pain!

However, combining L & R may provide a perceived increase. If not, then you'll have to make a simple transistor amplifier. The problem will be powering it from a clean DC source.

Please let me know your results so I can better advise others.

Can I use 'LOFTBOX' to send signal from 1 dish to 2 or 3 SKY+ DIGIBOXES in separate bedrooms.

mewa s.

Your needs may be better served by a multiswitch:
http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/multiswitches.htm

Loft Boxes can carry signals from the LNB. You will need an LNB with sufficient outputs to begin with.

Read about Loft Boxes here: http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/lofthelp.htm

Good Evening. I have just purchased your ebook 'Piping TV around the House'. Although informative, I am not sure it was the ebook I am after, as I am not looking to supply all TV's from the same source boxes. I am looking at (from the loft) tapping off from the roof mounted aerial to supply the downstairs lounge TV (currently the only TV supplied from the roof aerial), plus three additional Freeview TV's upstairs(these are currently supplied by a small indoor aerial, but of low reception strength). We do have a strong freeview reception via the roof aerial, but I am concerned that would be lost in the event of supplying the other three TV's. If possible, I am after information regarding connecting up a loft box to achieve this set-up. Do you have an ebook that will demonstrate?

Many thanks for your time in this matter, and, as a side note, the last part of your "expertise" drop down menu made me chuckle!

Shaun S.

Hi, Shaun. Our Loft Box information is here:
http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/lofthelp.htm

Please make sure that you really want a Loft Box and that a simple 4-output masthead amplifier isn't more suited (mounted near the aerial but in the Loft if you wish).

Equipment made by: Grundig Sky
Model number on label or rear panel: GSD 310/2

Hi Martin,

My brother-in-law has had Sky since about 1998 and has always had the same digibox, never upgraded or changed it, it's a GSD 310/2 according to the label on the bottom.

It's now in a spare room and recently it was kept unpowered for too long and per info I've read on the page a known issue with the PSU seems to have caused it to fail.

It powered up for a short time and pressing the Sky button it would give you a menu for a milisecond before the light went 'red', it now doesn't come on at all anymore.

As you can see, when I opened it up there were the obvious signs on the capacitors:

http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/5259/mygsd3012capacitors.jpg

To me it looks like a 33d and I wanted to check if this was correct from what you can see.

From what I read seems simple to swap out. I think I can manage this, I just want to check before I ask him to order this from you guys - £8 seems pretty reasonable.

I also noticed the section that said sending the failed power supply will allow a discount. Does the picture linked about look like this would fall into this category?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards

James

Hi, James.

As you can see if you compare photos, it does look like a 33d.

We used to offer an exchange service but I don't recall the last time we saw one of these so I doubt that we have one in stock. That leaves you with the choice of buying a kit and fitting it yourself, or getting a local repairer to fit it

http://www.satcure.co.uk/psu_fix.htm

or of sending the PSU to us and waiting while we get it repaired for you.

Replied:-

I'm not surprised you haven't seen one of these PSUs or boxes in a while.

There's no major time urgency on getting this digibox back up, so I guess in order for me to find out if the best plan is to send it over to you guys, the question would be, how much would a PSU fix cost?

I recommend you send it direct to Michael, our repairer.

Hi, later this Autumn, I'm planning on increasing the number of tv's in our house. We currently have a standard 60cm Sky oval dish with a 4 output LNB,

The standard Sky minidish is smaller than 60cm. I think the largest is about 54cm wide. The "zone 2" minidish is about 70cm wide.

we have a Sky+ HD box in our lounge and a standard sky HD in one of our kids bedrooms. Both tv feeds are HDMI fom their individual receivers.

I wish to add another tv in our bedroom. I am happy to use a magic eye and run fom the receiver in the lounge. How would I do this and with which products?

Lounge Digibox RF2 --> coaxial cable --> "magic eye" --> bedroom TV

See web site for choice of cable type, colour, connectors etc.

http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/split.htm
http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page3.htm#thincab
http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page8.htm#WF100cutSingle

Also we are looking at installing a HD tv with freeview in our third bedroom, I am aware that we have a free output from the LNB, would it be possible to connect the last tv to this and with what equipment?

Only for "FreesatFromSky". You'll need additional cable, clips and connectors.

If you really want "Freeview", you'll need a suitable TV aerial, cable, clips and plugs.

More info. on our web site.

Moving into a new house soon and have been planning all the wiring needed for multi room viewing. I have created a Visio drawing of what is needed and will upload a pdf copy after sending this to you.

I have bought and read (hopefully understood as well) your ebooks Piping TV round the house the Freeview Bible and Installing Digital Satellite.

So far I have a 60cm dish plus octo LNB and around 140m of CT100 cable but need some guidance on the Triax loft box and in room connections (faceplates etc).

CT100 cable hasn't been manufactured since 2005 so I assume you are referring to an "equivalent". Please make sure that it's suitable.

Will be happy to purchase all these parts from you once I have the list.

The pdf has the parts I think I need from the Triax documents, Can source surface mount pattress boxes, I'm guessing deeper would be better?

Yes, the deeper the better. Avoid kinking the cable.

See bottom of this page: http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/wall_plates.htm

(This reminds me. I have put wall plates onto their own web page now, because the existing page was becoming too full of amplifiers etc.)

I am wishing to replace the PSU in Thomson Sky+ box model DSI 8210CS. Can I pick one up from your location near Telford?

On 23/11/2009 I purchased dish4 Minidish+quad LNB (SKY J4S Zinwell Z1/1020). I now want a OCTO8 LNB. Will it fit straight onto the saddle bracket for the LNB quad. Dish is 43cm by 58cm and has a 25cm raven arm

Thanks Tony Y.

Hi, Tony.

I'm confused that you say the dish has a "raven arm" because it should be a Triax dish.
http://www.satcure.net/tech/triax_dish.htm

Anyway, for an oval dish you need a Sky LNB and that is here:
http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/octo_sky_lnb.htm

If it won't fit in your existing saddle bracket you may find that the new bracket supplied will fit over the arm. When you've optimised the focal position, you can drill a hole through the plastic bracket and dish arm and secure it with a bolt. That's my guess, anyway!

(Placed an order - thanks, Tony!)

I have a T140 amplifier (4 way) and have installed an aerial coming down from the loft and a coax cable going back up into the T140. I have already incorrectly purchased a wall plate that has only one cable connection. I want to have 2 cables with no capacitor so I can power the T140 in the loft from the sky box. Please advise which wall plate (the sky cables are already directly connected from the dish into the Sky+ box).

Helen W.

Hi, Helen. This page should help:
http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/split.htm

Note that the aerial cable connection goes into the Sky Digibox "aerial in" and back out from RF2 to the amplifier.

A simple plate with two 'F' connectors will do, but you should label them!

See two choices of plate http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/twin-plate.htm

I hope this helps. We also supply suitable cable, with or without plugs fitted, in a choice of colours.

I live on a houseboat near xxx in Middlesex. I moved to this location recently, and since I moved my Digital (Freeview) signal is poor. I don't even get a bunch of the channels I used to get.

I've fiddled with the aerial direction endlessly, and got it in the best place I can.

Also, since I moved here, any mobile phone activity breaks up the signal, making the TV freeze or jump.

I am hoping that boosting the signal with a masthead booster will improve things. Can you suggest a solution please? I have 12v DC electricity readily available from the boat batteries, plus 240v of course.

I have 2 TV's, wither end of the boat at about 45ft apart. I'd like to get a good signal on both.

Can you suggest a solution please?

Thanks

Robert N

Hi, Robert. The signal prediction for your postcode is a very respectable 48dBuV/m with the aerial at 2 metres. However, that doesn't take into account trees or buildings blocking the signal so please ensure that the aerial is high enough to have a clear line of sight for Crystal Palace. Compass bearing is about 94 degrees.

However, the aerial you have chosen is completely wrong for Crystal Palace. It has very poor gain at the lower "group A" frequencies used by C.P. Even if you boost it, that isn't going to give the best results.

So I'd suggest you use a V10-040 log-periodic aerial with a "group A" passband filter to get rid of unwanted signals. You could use any 2- or 4- port masthead amplifier and power it from its own PSU or use a DC inserter for 12 volts. All of these items are on our web site but let me know if you have any problem finding them. We have so much stuff that sometimes it can be hard to find one item!

Read about the V10-040 aerial here:
http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/best_aerial.htm

(You could, alternatively, use a "group A" aerial but the log-periodic is less susceptible to interference than any "Yagi" aerial. I mention this because of your mobile phone problem.)

In that respect, PLEASE use double-screened coaxial cable such as WF100 and make sure that any wall plate or aerial connection box on the houseboat is also screened. The cable lengths to both TVs should be roughly equal, to give the same signal level.

Masthead amps here:
http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page11c.htm#variable

You shouldn't need much gain so turn adjuster to minimum.

Let us know how you get on!

His response:-

I know I'm being dumb, but I want to get it right. I'm happy to order your recommendation for the:

"V10-040 log-periodic aerial with a "group A" passband filter" - please just provide a link to the exact product or tell me exactly what to order from your site... they all seem reasonably priced so I'm not going to quibble on price and come back with, "but this one's cheaper" etc.

As for a masthead amplifier, again, a 2-port is fine and please give me the exact part number, together with any bits I need to provide power. If they have their own power supply, I'll use that - I just let me know any connectors and stuff I need.

"double-screened coaxial cable such as WF100 and make sure that any wall plate or aerial connection box on the houseboat is also screened"

Ditto - can you tell me how to make sure the wall plate or connection box is screened? What constitutes 'screening'? Thanks!

I have no idea if my cable is WF100 so I'll look that up on your web site and order that too.

If you can let me have these details, I'll go ahead and order. I'm impressed with your service - it gives me confidence in your recommendations.

Thanks

Robert

OK, I normally avoid telling a prospective customer precisely what to order. I don't want to appear pushy or didactic. It's always better if you read the technical information and understand WHY you need to order a particular item (or at least why I'm recommending it). I hope you have at least read the "best aerial" page. That contains "Add to Cart" buttons for a "gable end" kit, which might do the job for you. Otherwise, try these links:

Select the V10-040 from the drop-down list:
http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page11f.htm#list

Select the UFR2-20 (includes PSU) if you are certain there's nothing on that page which better suits your requirements:
http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page11c.htm#variable

WF100 cable start here:
http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page8.htm#WF100

Decide the colour, whether you want a reel or cut lengths, whether twin cable might be more convenient (you can split it into single where necessary). 'F' plugs are an "add" option for cut lengths. Otherwise you can order them here:
http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page7.htm#fconn

Select "WF1" plug for WF100 cable.

DC Inserter, if required
http://www.satcure.com/accs/page3.htm#inserter

You'll need two male TV plugs. A DC plug is included for soldering to your twin flex from the 12v battery.
It's a bit more hassle than a 230v PSU!

I want to move a Sky+ HD STB to a loft space 10m from my TV. I have the 10m HDMI cable now I just need something to change channels on the soon to be remote STB.

What would you recommend?

Darren K.

Hi, Darren. You could try a wireless solution such as the "Powermid" but it tends to be obtrusive (read "ugly") and may be unreliable - especially if your ceiling uses aluminium foil-backed plasterboard.

So my recommendation would be to run a coaxial cable alongside the HDMI cable so that you can connect a "magic eye" to the Digibox RF2 output. You can use our "ultra-thin" cable to make it easier:
http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page3.htm#thincab

RF2 is male so you will need a female TV plug (screw connection type) or a male TV plug with adapter to convert it to female.

The "Visionlink" magic eye has a threaded connector so you'll need the 'F' plug on that end of the cable.

Anyway, please let us know how you get on!

Hello Martin,

I'm such a newbie at this and a little confused with the VisionLink and what bits go where. Obviously I should be left with the "eye" next to my TV, is the "eye" attached to the tubular section by wire and what of the tubular section and its connector, what does that attach to?

Sorry to be so, new.

Darren K.

Please read this page:
http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/split.htm

Ignore the reference to "split". You won't need a splitter. The cable goes direct.

Digibox RF2 --> cable --> VisionLink

Come back if you still can't figure it out!

I can give you quick answers but it's best if you understand exactly how it works so you can make your own choices.

Hi, I have an Amstrad DRX280 sky+ box that died last week, I checked the plug fuse which was fine, so i took the lid off the box and that the internal fuse had popped, it wasn't melted or anything it had just popped, do you sell replacements? and what is the model number of the fuse as I have misplaced the old one!!.

Many Thanks

Jason D.

Hi, Jason. Unfortunately, I don't know the fuse value and type but, by law, it must be printed on the PCB next to the fuse. Occasionally the fuse will fail simply because there was a mains surge. However, fuse failure usually means that some other part has failed and the PSU needs repair. Your best bet would be to send it to Digifix.

Hi, I was on the Satellite for Caravans website for help in setting up my system and was successful. However, the site recommends push fit connectors to make life easier connecting and disconnecting cables as they are for a caravan and so are not permanently in place. I followed the link and found adaptors part no 090-3636 (H090-3636) which I think are on page 7. However there seems only to be one adaptor (i.e. threaded male and female push fit) and I think I need a set, i.e. male and female to enable me to get this to work. Please advise what connectors I need to help me solve this. Many thanks for your time.

Anne Marie M.

Hi, Anne Marie. I think it best if you simply look at the photograph (blue background) beneath the movie on this page:

http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/fconn.htm

(Thanked.)

Errors on website
-------------------

Photos at http://www.satcure.com/tech/triax2.htm show incorrect Triax assembly:

1. Bolts securing elevation bracket to reflector back bracket have square shoulders to fit pressed-out squares in reflector back bracket, so nuts should be on the OUTSIDE.

2. The bracket with the scale is shown mounted UPSIDE-DOWN, so a high angle means the dish is pointing into the ground!

Otherwise these notes/photos are very useful.

B*gger. We've been selling those since 2009 and you're the first to notice.

Is that why I couldn't find a "pointer" mark on the bracket to line up with the scale?

Question
----------

WF100 cable, especially double/shotgun, is a pig to handle - just how bad would it be to bring it to a wall plate connection and use 4m of more flexible (more attenuation) cable in the room? I am receiving HD fine at the moment.

Well, for WF125 we do recommend connecting it to more flexible cable for the last meter or two indoors and to the LNB. No reason why you can't join WF100 to WC100 (if you can get hold of some). WF100 twin should be split apart to go through 2 holes in the wall, any way.

Martin

I have just bought a house on Hydra (Greek island).

I have an 80cm dish , I want to receive Sky and BBC what do I need to buy please.

Thanks.

Matthew.

Hi, Matt. You won't receive very much at all with an 80cm dish. It probably isn't worth buying a Sky subscription.

Even with a 4m dish you'd be lucky to get BBC.

I use a 1.2m dish here on Crete and that gets me ITV, CH4, CH5 (with a Sky Digibox and FreesatFromSky card). It would also get a limited number of Sky channels if I subscribed (I don't). Are there no expats on Ydra who you can ask? I really wouldn't like to guess what channels you'll get but you can forget about Astra-2D and the north beams.

(No response.)

I am a caravaner using freeview. What is the best type of coax cable for me to buy, especially as I require a degree of flexibility in the cable as I shall need to wrap the cable around a 'hose-type reel' for transport.

Many thanks

All cable is new Digital double screened cable using F connectors ( I know how to wire cables)no shorts across conductors.

TV antenna direct to TV produces fault free pictures

Do I need a new Loftbox?

Ben B.

Hi, Ben. Although you stated you'd explain the fault history, you haven't. Consequently I don't know if this just happened with a new installation or if it has been OK for years and suddenly started.

Also, unfortunately, I don't recognise "SE00366 8 way TV Link LOFTBOX". It's not something we sell.

It's difficult to tell without sight of your wiring diagram and more information but it seems that your Loft Box might be faulty. But this is only a guess.

Unfortunately, the bypass unit does not work.

I have tried it straight from the Sky box (ignoring the amplifier) and still no joy - I have supporting pictures but can't attach on here obviously.

What i've tried: Sky eye straight from Box, works, LED lights up. Then, cable from Sky box including bypasses in chain, Sky eye does not light up! Hence, they are clearly not bypassing the signal along the line.

Carl H.

Hi, Carl,

The Bypass kit is bidirectional. Just make sure that you have the ends labelled "DA" pointing at each other. In other words, "DA" ends connect to the amplifier. The other ends (female sockets) are the ones that connect to the Digibox RF2 and to the remote "magic eye". (Make sure you connect the "magic eye" the correct way round.)

I need to replace the existing, short pair of cables running from the lnb of my dish outside with a single, longer cable into the single input DVB-S2 tuner card of my PC. Ideally, a ready made cable with screw-on connectors so I can just remove the plug at the indoor end and feed it through the wall. Do you sell readymade cables?

Yes. But why not simply extend one of the existing cables?
http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page8.htm#extend

If not, can you advise on everything I would need to make up such a cable (including grease and any sort of tape/sealant)

Depends on your LNB. Please read notes on our web site.
http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/boots.htm

The lnb has four (exposed) ports, will these need covering?

Yes, I use "Blu-Tack". See "boots" page.

His response:

I'd like to replace the entire cable so plan to order some WF100BL cable. I'm a little confused why it is listed as 'extension leads', is this the correct item to order? I don't want to extend the existing cable but create a new run from LNB to reciever with F connectors at each end.

Because most people who order cable with plugs already fitted want to use it to extend an existing cable. If you run it from the LNB, you'll have to remove a plug to pass the cable through the wall. Make sure you order it with plugs that unscrew.

Installed X RAY remote as per enclosed instruction leaflet. Charged batteries fully (24 hrs) and installed transmitter/battery in sky remote. Placed IR transmitter by sky box was not able to control sky box. All channels have been tried also switched batteries around in remote, tried covering ir trans with opaque tape. All other equipment was turned off, although it all works in the 1.8 - 2 gig range (Router, Mobile Phone) The channel light on the RF receiver stays steady red except when receiving a signal from the remote transmitter then it flashes. I have tried all the above without success. Is the unit faulty, only received from you last friday or is there something I am missing?

Would appreciate some help.

If this is a genuine enquiry, then I'll hazard a guess that Freesat receivers don't support the button press by switching to the relevant "stream", as Sky Digiboxes do.

Ask in the forums. Someone will know.

Can you confirm that the webro wc100 of which you have limited stock is air spaced? I only ask because I have ordered "ct100" elsewhere and received foam dielectric cable whereas I do actually want the old air spaced. Your site implies that yours is air spaced but I wanted to be sure before placing an order. Thank you for your time.

David E.

Hi, David. WC100 is air spaced (otherwise it isn't WC100). I don't think we have much left so be sure to specify NO ALTERNATIVE in your order, otherwise the girls might helpfully send the "better" WF100.

His response:

many thanks, esp for the ordering tip. I'll place an order in a few days - I'm not at home at the moment. YOU clearly are honest about what you are selling but not everyone is!

David E.

Sometimes we are too honest for our own good and lose sales. But I'm an engineer, not a salesman, and I don't feel comfortable about selling stuff the customer can't use.

Most of our cable comes from Webro but some is made by Triax and one specific reel comes from China. However, we don't knowingly sell crap and we try to mark our products accurately. Unfortunately, since a lot of our stock is "drop shipped" direct from various trade warehouses, they will occasionally slip in an "equivalent" and get us into trouble.

Anyway, if by any chance you do receive the wrong cable, the magic words "no substitutes" or similar will guarantee you a full refund. BTW if colour doesn't matter, state "any colour".

(He ordered a reel. Thanks, David. I hope we had some left!)

Happy Customers

THANK YOU

Just a message to say that I am so impressed with the wealth of info on your web site that ensured that I really understood what I wanted before I ordered.

Also when I did order, the very quick delivery and the quality of the installation pack that you sent.

I had a little difficulty putting the aerial together as I was uncertain about whether I might damage it but I got a very fast technical reply and the V10-040 log-periodic aerial works brilliantly.

I have a wooded hill between me and Crystal Palace and have always had very poor signal quality, especially when it rained, but the signal is now coming through clearly on all my equipment.

Thanks, John.

Once again indebted to you (previous: LNB41 Invacom Universal twin-output which is now working fine - thank you).

I tried AlphaOmega Specs repair this weekend. Glasses with broken frame sent Saturday with a cheque and these were returned yesterday with an almost invisible repair - they look like new. Amazing service - thanks for the tip.

Best regards

Jon Travis

(Alpha Omega was mentioned last month.)

THANK YOU

My Sky+ box died on Thursday. I came across a possible solution on your site, involving replacement capacitors, on Friday. I called Sky to check whether they knew of this as a common problem. The Sky operative instead wanted me to do a software update though I repeated that I couldn't get it to power on. I said "Could this be a problem with the capacitors in the power supply?" He said "The capacity is 160GB." I don't think he knew what a capacitor was, so I ended the call there.

The replacement capacitor kit arrived today, Tuesday, and by this evening it was up and working. A couple of Skype calls along the way kept me on track.

So many thanks. This is my biggest 'save' since I replaced a 28-pin converter module on my Toshiba TV, so I'm very happy.

Hi Martin.

Very pleased with recent items ordered from Satcure, and your help/advice back in the D2mac days!

My query is with the Labgear CA141F 4 way amplifier.

All website info, and the makers box itself says a 9v PSU is required, and even gives details of a 9v Labgear unit and part number on the box.

The unit however is clearly marked 12vDC IN by the jack socket and also on the back, says External Power Supply 12vDC.

Just thought you might like to investigate!!

Regards,

John Holland

Nice to hear from you, John.

The "SkyLink compatible" magic eyes and amplifiers will work happily at 9 volts but will tolerate 12 volts. That's my understanding.

The original manufacturing rights are now owned by a company that stole my 'F' plug fitting instructions, complete with my photos, for their own web site. Their technical incompetence and lack of ethics know no bounds. We offer very few of their products now. In my opinion, they changed from a friendly, helpful company to an arrogant behemoth.

Just my opinion.

Best Wishes,

Martin

RELKIT33m 2 x 1200uF for Thomson DTi6300 Qty:1 at £1.15

SOLDERKIT Solder/desoldering kit Qty:1 at £0.95

Just a note to say thank you for a super service, prompt delivery and extensive instructions, which made changing over the capacitors a doddle. The Thomson box works a treat and my wife can now watch the episodes of Desperate Housewifes she had recorded on the machine. I have not done any soldering since the 60's when I made up Sinclair Hi fi's from bits and bobs.

I placed the order on 23rd June when my Visa card was valid. Two weeks later you process the payment after my card has expired.

Many thanks, John, and apologies for the delayed order and your card problems. However, unlike most companies, we don't charge a customer until the order is ready to despatch. Maybe we are crazy - we could use the extra interest - but we like to be fair and honest.

Thanks, again, for your order. I hope the amplifier does the job for you when it arrives.

A BIG "thank you" to all those who took the trouble to write to us!

That's it for another month, folks!
