News

I've spent at least two whole 12 hour days on this month's blog. I've checked the spelling and the links (which should all open either a new window or a new tab, dependent on how you've set your browser). If you read everything and click on every link, it will take you several hours to read everything! I hope you enjoy it.

Oh, yes, I have spent weeks redesigning the SatCure web site, too. I'm trying to make it easier to navigate and understand. Last week a guy called me and complained that he couldn't navigate to the sales page (the tab labelled "Shop" wasn't obvious) so I have added a picture of a shop front.

Somebody else commented that I have a massive page about coaxial cable but the actual specifications were hard to find. I think I've fixed that!

If you have other (helpful) suggestions that can be implemented with no cost penalty, please let me know. (This link is not for technical questions.)

The end of Sky Interactive?

The original 'Open....' service in 1999 was quite impressive for its time but now it looks as if BskyB will shut down its Interactive services, which have gradually declined, and free up much-needed bandwidth.

New Amstrad/Sky firmware

Sky are planning a rollout of the latest software for DRX890/895 in the coming weeks. A number of fixes are claimed for issues such as box stability, subtitles, 'searching for...', and Anytime content for SD users with HD boxes. (Thanks to "Kenedin" for pointing this out.)

REAL DIGITAL to launch in September 2011

Alternative pay-TV provider REAL Digital is looking to launch its service on September 1, following the release of its set-top box into the UK retail market in the summer of 2011.

We'll believe it when it happens.

Do you live in Wales?

This is way off topic but I thought I'd save you £100. If you have a septic tank, read this:

http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/118753.aspx

People in Wales who have a septic tank must register it before December 31st, otherwise there will be a £100 fine (called a "late registration fee").

Burnt Sky Cards

I've seen quite a few reports of scorched Sky cards in Amstrads - especially the DRX780.

My suspicion is that it's a design error or a Power supply Fault. If you have an Amstrad, take a look at your card. If it's burnt, you may have a faulty PSU. Join the discussion here:

Monthly Whinge

This month I'm going to let you do the whinging!

As I anticipated, the special 99p eBook offer resulted in a number of complaints. Here's a typical one. This customer used his AOL email address to place an order, despite a warning on every shopping cart page that he mustn't. Needless to say, the payment was made but the order didn't go through. I had to process a refund, which took time and effort.

Please send the download details I have paid for.

I have no problem receiving emails from you at my AOL address or my alternative Hotmail address which I also gave you.

These are the only email addresses I have and expecting AOL customers to jump through many hoops because of your unreasonable hatred and impatience with them must lose you a lot of business.

Other businesses can handle AOL without problems or make the effort to resolve any, why not you?

Regards,

Noel

Because we don't have the resources. There is only me on the technical side and I have neither the time nor expertise. Compare us with the likes of Amazon, who probably employ a whole department dealing with such matters and you might start to understand.

In the early days we had a whole bunch of complaints from AOL users, who claimed they hadn't received the download information by email. I read a load of stuff about "white listing" for AOL and decided it wasn't worth the hassle because it can be reversed, at the click of a mouse by any AOL user who thinks a message from us is "spam", and then has to be done all over again.

Consequently, we altered the "Cool Book Shop" cart so it displayed plenty of warnings. Those AOLs who really wanted an eBook used an alternative email address. A few spent much time and energy complaining and didn't buy an eBook (or, more likely, got a friend to buy it on their behalf).

P.s. I don't "hate" AOL or its users. I'm completely indifferent. But statistically a large percentage of AOL users are relative newcomers to the Internet and haven't yet learned how to set up their email accounts. The majority don't even understand "bcc". For the more experienced AOL user, we have provided a simple way to use the SatCure shopping cart (but not the "Cool Book Shop" cart because the software is not under our control).

I really wanted to take advantage of your 99p eBook offer but your shopping cart requires me to sign up with Paypal and I don't want to do that!

Nev.

I truly sympathise. In fact I'm not a great fan of Paypal and, on a 99p order, it deducts 22p so we actually get 77p minus tax. However, the Cool Book Shop shopping cart that handles eBooks is set up only to use Paypal and it would be a lot of hassle to add other payment gateways, especially since most customers already have a Paypal account.

BTW if anyone ordered the eBooks but didn't receive the email with download instructions, PLEASE contact me with a reliable, working email address and your Paypal payment number. Paypal occasionally fails to forward the order to our server so the email doesn't get sent.

My location is: County Waterford . Ireland

I wanted to take up your offer of your 6 books for 99p -- [x2 purchases - one to replace ones I have already bought from you and another for a friend who runs a residential charity ] When I click the link to complete the purchase from "The Cool Bookshop " it asks for my address and postcode . Although it has a drop down list of many countries it will not change from UK to Ireland -- further -- whilst postcodes are a required field for the bookshop -- they do not exist in Ireland. So I cannot complete the form to the same details as my Paypal address or a credit card address. I hope that you can sort them out before your offer ends this evening !!

Rene

Hi, Rene,

I have tested the shopping cart and had no problem in selecting "Ireland" from the country list. If you can't get "Ireland" to stick in the dropdown menu, try using a different browser. It sounds like a browser fault to me. You can type anything you like into the "Postcode" box.

Sodding Ants!

We've been overrun by these friggin pests for weeks. I wouldn't mind but they are swarming around our kitchen door so we mash them each time we enter or leave.

I bought a little green tub of "ant bait" for 8 Euros. "Guaranteed - I use eet myself" said the Greek shop owner. Cool.

It didn't work. The ants ignored it.

I did some research then went to the pharmacy and bought a large box of boracic acid "foot powder" for less than 4 Euros. I mixed a little with some icing sugar and added a few drops of boiling water to make a honey-like gook.

Once it had cooled, I dribbled this gook in cracks around the patio area and left it. Next day there were a lot less ants so I mixed up some more gook and spread it around. After four days of this, there was hardly a (live) ant to be seen near the door. (Around the garden there are many more ant nests, which I shall leave alone, so no complaints from ant-lovers, please!)

Feedback

Hi,Martin,

As a fellow Mac user and a newbie satellite enthusiast I have been greatly impressed and hugely appreciative of all the free help and sensible advice from the SatCure website and newsletters. But now that I've finally got around to ordering a VISION V10-040 loft kit and experienced the SatCure ordering process I'm slightly disappointed.

Please let me know your current email address so that I can pass on some (constructive) comments/feedback about shipments to Ireland.

Regards,

Bert

Hi, Bert,

The last time I checked, most carrier companies wanted to add £21 to the standard mainland shipping charge because they had to use the ferry. Sales can give you the exact figure.

Shipments to Ireland generally can't be done directly from the various suppliers that we use. They don't want the hassle of shipping "overseas" and I can't say that I blame them. Instead, we have to pay for the items to be delivered to us, then pay to have them shipped across water. We get stung pretty hard because we don't give the International carriers much business - a "chicken and egg" situation because, with shipping so expensive, we don't have many orders to go abroad. I think the cheapest charge will be about £30 and we'll make a small loss on that.

Our cheapest option is currently "Parcel Farce". You can tell, by the name, how much we love them. Their best trick was to fail to find the delivery address in France, return the goods to us after 3 months, and charge us a penalty for the pleasure of failing to do their job. This is why we now insist on having a phone number for the delivery address. That we they have no excuse.

I have written to the FSB about the expense of shipping abroad. How can the government expect us to export when shipping costs are so high?

Just to add to our woes, companies that were originally selling only books (Amazon) or screws (Screwfix) have jumped on the bandwagon and offer satellite TV and Freeview equipment with either free shipping or very cheap. Obviously they don't have any technical expertise to help their customers so they can cut costs there. (I use both these companies myself. The service is brilliant till something doesn't work. Then all they can offer is a refund.)

In addition to this, we have a shopping cart that, in my opinion, isn't as easy to use as I'd like and can't calculate the overseas shipping cost accurately. Overseas customers have to place an order with "Provisional" in the notes then ask us for the true cost. Unfortunately, it's tied into my partners' ordering system so I can't do anything about it directly.

Oh, and with regard to the V10-040, it's a brilliant aerial that comes in a rather flimsy box. We have the choice of packing it, ourselves, in a stronger box, or of taking the hit when it gets damaged. Generally we take the hit because strong cardboard boxes aren't cheap - around £3 each, plus the hidden cost of warehouse space and labour and of having that money tied up in cardboard and of lost orders because our aerials are now more expensive than those of our competitors. It's not easy to strike a balance.

Anyway, what did you want to tell me?

Hi Martin,

Thank you for the speedy and typically comprehensive reply. You probably won't find it surprising that you've already taken a lot of the wind from my sails by predicting in advance nearly every point I raised in my "provisional order" to your sails department earlier in the day.

Having read your very positive review of the Vision log periodic aerials I am determined to try one.

I have to admit that my first encounter some days ago with the SatCure shipping charges ("standard" quote £45) and the difficulties in clarifying this via the ordering process initially put me off and I had a go at locating a supplier of Vision products in Ireland in the meantime. But, hardly surprisingly to me, all to no avail.

I was surprised at the shipping quote from SatCure since I've had several weighty items from the UK by DHL, DPD etc. and the max. cost was £28 for an 8-9 kg. parcel though I'm beginning to suspect that a 'minimum charge' still applies even though it may be for something a lot lighter like this aerial?  Possibly the £30 approx. which you mentioned in your reply sounds probable?

Next I tried other UK suppliers just to compare shipping charges.

The first seller I encountered was TVaerials.com who are about 5 or six quid dearer than you overall for the full 'kit' until it comes to "shipping"  ...or should that be "posting"? In view of what we've been saying I suspect their quote of £18.37 inc. vat can only refer to the latter i.e., "Parcel Farce"! I've just emailed them for clarification and I'll let you know.

I'm still not clear however whether the £30 (approx. estimate) you referred to for SatCure is for carrier+ in a box / carrier+ in original packaging (but how could that include amp, PSU and spike?) or parcel force but packed properly by SatCure?

M: It's for standard packaging, so there's still a risk that it arrives broken. If you want to pay extra for packing, please let us know.

In any event I am awaiting a reply from your sales dept. and will hopefully take it from there.

In my humble opinion your website is terrific apart from a few navigating difficulties but the information you glean along the way more than makes up for this. Any genuine enthusiast could only appreciate the time you've put into it as indeed your numerous testimonials attest.

The ordering process however as you've said yourself is a bit of a disaster and is undoubtedly putting off any but the more determined fans such as myself.

Which is AN ABSOLUTE SHAME.

Talent, expertise and commitment should always be suitably rewarded but at 60 years of age I'm well aware of the fact that this is not always the case in the modern world. Why else are people still buying PC's rather than Macs? (Although I think the new Macs and Lion OS will have something to say about that. Albeit, regrettably, at the expense of Apple seeming to be facilitating the 'click and it's done' mentality rather than their 'slightly more technically minded' long term supporters).

Nonetheless I'm certain that the £10,000 investment you mentioned would be more than repaid in increased sales in a matter of weeks, particularly with the advent of Digital.

I've pasted a copy of my (lengthy!) "Provisional order" below, more out of courtesy to you than anything else as I feel you've already answered most of my questions and I've already taken up too much of your time.

If you choose to read it I hope you can do so in the spirit in which it was intended.

Best wishes from Waterford, Ireland

(or from what you've been saying, in the case of 'Parcel Farce' perhaps,  ... Waterford, Ireland, via Azerbaijan!)

Kindest regards,

Bert

Humax Foxsat Red Button (mentioned in blog #155)

Hi. Purchased a Humax Foxsat-hdr, Freesat+ 500 GB (Shop says 320 GB is no longer made)last Saturday, 30 July. The red button function on this PVR works in the same way as a Freeview receiver. You can tell if the service is available because a "press red" icon appears top right for about 30 seconds when you select an appropriate channel. I got the Formula 1 forum on the red button on Sunday. (You should have seen Jake Humphrey whip the microphone away from a fan when he said "We don't want Formula 1 on Sky!!") BUT, if you are connected to your broadband for tv-on-demand, the red button then takes you to an Internet based service instead. This includes BBC iPlayer if you are on a BBC station.

On a different PVR, remember after you advised of the new BBC One HD frequency, I retuned my AB IPbox 9000 hd. It worked, but I lost the now&next EPG. I did not delete the old frequency, and found the EPG still there, and working! I retuned all the HD channels, got the settings from Lyngsat, and now it gets all the hd channels, but no EPGs. Some are encoded, so not watchable and some are the Freesat ones.

Regards, Bob.

Paranoia Rools

Non HTTPS entry of personal data on site

Hello,

Firstly, I've just taken advantage of your "SPECIAL OFFERS - click on these links right away." link, to refresh a book I've already bought, and also to take advantage of the other books. Thank you for that.

My point: I've just had to enter my name/address/email via a HTTP form to place the order. I do not feel this is appropriate, and this should be wrapped within a `secure' HTTPS TLS/SSL mechanism.

I did try to manually change the URL to HTTPS rather than HTTP, but this met with an error.

Particularly this is a problem in unencrypted wireless environments such as web cafes, etc., where this personal data could be 'sniffed'.

Please consider very seriously the encryption of personal data such as this, I weighed up the pro/cons before ordering on a WIRED connection - but it was such a good deal... I'd rather not have to consider this when placing an order.

Best wishes, thanks once again.

J C Patterson.

PS. This feedback form is also on HTTP only and requires my details!

Hi, JC.

I understand your point and a recent American survey indicated that about 30% of Americans share your concern. (I haven't seen a UK survey.) In common with Amazon orders, and others, our order (including name and address) gets emailed back to the customer for reference and for checking. If Amazon do it, my take is that it's OK.

As regards the email forms, apart from your email address (required for a reply but feel free to use a false one or a temporary one), it's up to you what information you include.

If someone is sufficiently interested, they will find your address quite easily, unless you have gone to great lengths to hide. If you are worried, don't use a wireless connection in a public place and do tick the little box on the election form so your name doesn't appear on the public electoral register. Don't buy any TV receiving equipment because the retailer is legally obliged to report your details to the TV licensing authority. Don't use "Windows" because it is more susceptible to hacking than Linux or OSX. Don't get a driving licence, passport, insurance, credit card, bank account or own a mobile phone - same reason. Don't ever get into trouble with the police. Don't fill out that stupid "holiday satisfaction" form on an aircraft - (my wife loves those). Actually, it's probably safer to avoid living in the UK altogether.

The important point - and I want to stress this - is that your credit card information IS taken via a secure connection and stored encrypted on a secure server.

(In the specific case of eBooks from "The Cool Book Shop", payment is taken via Paypal so even WE don't get to see any credit card details.)

There is a lot of paranoia regarding "identity theft". (I remember when it was called "impersonation".) Some of it is justified and some of it isn't. Your name and address and mother's maiden name are easily determined by anyone with a small amount of knowledge. It only matters if that information can be linked to other details. That's why it's a good idea to tear your name and address off all correspondence before recycling. Your name and address alone are of no use but, in association with a utility bill, could be used to gain pecuniary advantage.

Finally, I would like to add that we don't divulge any customer's details to any third party, except for the purpose of obtaining payment for an order and of having it delivered. On that point, we have no option but to print the name, address and phone number on the delivery note. It can be seen by any casual passer by who happens to look in the back of the delivery van.

On a side note, I was recently approached by an insurance company that wanted me to pay for protection against "identity theft". In order to achieve this, they wanted me to write down all my personal details plus my credit and debit card numbers, tax number, NHS number and passport number, then send by post. All of these details (if the letter arrived) would be stored together on a computer. It seemed to me like a hacker's dream. Everything in one place! Frankly, I thought it was a scam and I contacted the company to check. But it was genuine and they really thought I ought to pay them for keeping a copy of ALL my details in one place for "protection". The daft point was that they were not actually protecting me from "identity theft" (in fact they were increasing the risk). They were merely offering to pay me a small sum if it happened and to inform the card companies - something that I'm actually capable of doing myself.

We do have to be careful about divulging certain information but we also need to maintain a sensible balance, otherwise we'll all have a stiff neck from looking over our shoulders.

Hello Martin,

You wrote about trying to get in touch with 1and1 to cancel your service. You wrote you cannot call 0844 numbers from abroad.

I would like to offer a solution.

There is a web site called www.saynoto0870.com. I heard about it on Radio 2.

If you 'search to find an alternative number' for '1and1' you will find geographic telephone numbers you can call.

I hope this helps.

Best wishes,

Terry.

Thanks Terry and everyone else who pointed this out. '1and1' merely kept insisting that I phoned their 0844 number from Greece. I mentioned it as an illustration of their stupidity. I'm perfectly aware that they have other numbers but they didn't offer me any. However, as I stated, I already cancelled by letter AND received an acknowledgement (twice).

Many thanks for taking the trouble to write.

(Today, despite having twice confirmed cancellation of my account, in writing, 1and1 sent me an email asking me to provide up to date credit card details for my account. Does anyone really want to deal with a company like this?)

Caravan Aerial

There's a contribution about our V10-040 aerial on a caravan below in the "Questions" section.

Somebody whose ISP is based in Hockley, Essex, uploaded this photo but failed to send an email, or leave a message in the forum. Consequently, I will guess the question.

The dish is a very old Sky minidish with a Grundig LNB. Possibly a Channel Master dish, in which case a MK4 Sky LNB should fit, by drilling a hole and fitting a self-tapping screw.

The cable is probably past its best so I would replace it. The green mould can be removed with bleach followed by detergent to degrease the dish. Then give it a couple of coats of paint to protect it. I hope that answers the question.

If you have anything of interest to contribute, please contact me with details. What have you installed? What problems have you had? Have you been ripped off? Tell us all about it. (Make it interesting.)

Questions

- a selection from this month's emails

If you are a new subscriber I'm afraid that you might find some of my replies a little blunt to the point of being rude. That's just the way I am after answering customers' questions for the last fifteen years. Please don't take offence. Sometimes I'm a little tired, ratty or impatient and it shows! Generally, if you ask for a free reply, you'll get what you pay for. If you DO have a question, PLEASE read the web site information and eBooks first. I get the same questions day after day because people are in too much of a hurry to look.

If you want me to give you links to the relevant pages, I'm happy to do that if you provide enough information.

Caravan Aerial

At the moment we have an Image 620 Digital Antenna System 09-6000/620

- with a four section mast mounted on a Jockey Wheel Bracket (Came as a kit). Not very good reception at several sites. Can you recommend one that would improve things please? Also any fittings necessary.

Thanks if you can help.

Peter

Hi, Peter. I can't find any technical specifications for your aerial, which suggests to me that its technical performance isn't worth a dime. Consequently, I suggest you try our "Vision 10-040" aerial, which should fit onto the existing mast.

http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/best_aerial.htm

The V10-040 has 40 active elements, compared with about 9 for your "620 Digital Antenna". You should find it performs considerably better. This is the ONLY aerial I can recommend for mobile (parked) use. It may not look as pretty as those plastic cased "caravan antennas" but its performance is streets ahead.

(Peter ordered an aerial. This is his subsequent report:-)

Hi Martin,

Yes, I just got around to finishing wiring it up and trying it in the caravan yesterday.  Really great results! In the past I have tried a 'caravan specific' exterior 'on a pole' aerial and also have an onboard omnidirectional Status aerial with amplifier - but this is by far the best.

Maybe aided by the better cable and the installation instructions provided by you - but delighted with the results.

Many thanks,

Peter.

P.s. I just wondered why this new aerial doesn't work if I plug it into the 'Status' amplifier?

I believe that the "Status" amplifier is built in to the aerial, which suggests that you are actually plugging the V10-040 into the power supply!

Anyway, the V10-040 does not require an amplifier unless your cable run is much longer or your Freeview TV or receiver is very insensitive. (This is more likely to be the case with a cheap TV that splits the aerial signal between an internal analogue and a digital tuner.)

However, an amplifier with more than one output might be handy if you want to supply your neighbours with a TV signal. That should make you some friends!

See another caravan-owner's report

Jim put his own review of our V10-040 log-periodic aerial on his own web site, here. The aerial replaces his original (expensive) Status S530 aerial built into his Swift Challenger 570 caravan.

I would like to buy an aerial set up to operate from my Campervan in Europe mainly UK France Italy. Not looking for something that is fixed to van rather free standing on a pole type.

V10-040 would this be technically suitable?

Technically I can't think of anything better.

We also supply suitable sectional poles:

http://www.satcure.com/accs/page2a.htm#sectional

Can you recommend please together with price and delivery.

Unfortunately, this is not a technical question. Please add your desired items to the shopping cart and it will calculate a no-obligation total. Occasionally it gets the carriage charge wrong. To get an accurate carriage quotation, go ahead and place the order but type in the checkout notes:

"PROVISIONAL - please advise total including exact carriage".

If you want to make darn sure your order isn't processed, select "cheque" as payment method. You can then pay later if you accept the quotation.

I hope this helps answer your questions but feel free to come back if you have any other questions. We do stock virtually everything you could possibly need. See our hardware page (link above) and our caravan page, in particular.

http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page17.htm

All items received on Friday - great service.

I hoped to be able to use the new LNB with an existing dish I purchased from you and the existing LNB (quad) with the new dish.

I fitted new LNB and moved across just two cables to it to test if the beam would be correct.

I got a good strong signal but only on certain channels.

Working - BBC2, ITV, CH4, CH5, ALBA, ITV2+1, ITV4+1, ITV HD, MORE4+1, HORROR (plus more)

Not working - BBC1, BBC1 HD, BBC HD, ITV2, ITV3, ITV3+1, S4C, C4+1, E4, E4+1, More4

I've checked the frequencies of all these channels on Lyngsat and found that the ones that work are all Horizontal, the ones that fail are all Vertical.

My receiver is a Humax Foxsat HD.

I've swapped the LNBs back round so I'm using the old one and all channels work correctly again.

My next step will be to do some further testing with the new LNB attached to the new dish, double check settings on the Foxsat and also dig out another receiver (old Force 1144s). I'll also use very short cabling to try to eliminate that factor.

The reason for this email is really to let you know that the LNB may be faulty, but I will try to investigate at my end fully before I come to that conclusion, and that I will try to get this done Monday or Tuesday evening.

Regards

Fletcher

It's possible that your Humax is supplying more than 14 volts for "vertical" polarisation and the LNB is therefore not reacting. With this in mind (voltage not low enough) the longer the cable the better! Checking with another receiver will confirm.

Martin

Thanks for your suggestion about voltage.

I rigged the new dish up in the garden on a camera tripod and found the signal. This was using just a short patch cable between Humax and LNB.

This also had no vertical channels.

I then went through the Humax menus and found the power setting was on High, so I changed it to normal and the vertical channels appeared.

The old LNB must be slightly more forgiving on voltage than the new one.

I've checked each output on the new LNB and they are all fine - all channels appeared.

So, many thanks for your quick response and service.

Fletcher

Our DAB reception is poor, as is Freeview. Will it change when the switch over reaches us?

DAB reception will not be affected by switching analogue TV off. (Indeed, this has already taken place in most of the UK, with no effect on DAB radio.)

The Government set a loose target of 2015 for the switch-off of FM radio broadcasting but industry leaders see this target as unrealistic. In particular, there would be a public outcry from owners of cars that would require an expensive replacement radio. Consequently, FM radio could continue for up to 20 years!

In addition, even when FM radio does eventually stop broadcasting, I'm not aware of any plans to increase the power of DAB. What is somewhat more likely is that the mode of transmission will eventually be changed, making reception more reliable and requiring the replacement of quite a few existing DAB radios if they can't be "firmware updated".

The increase in Freeview power, after analogue is switched off, will also not affect DAB radio, although it should improve your Freeview reception if weak signal strength is your problem. Note that "poor Freeview reception" has many possible causes, including too high a Freeview signal or (where it still exists) too high an analogue signal.

My 91 year old mother cannot operate the complicated remote control supplied with the digital set top box, and the big button remote control she currently has for her TV does not allow her to access digital TV.  Is there a big button remote control which will allow her to access digital TV (she does not have cable TV)?

Probably not but maybe a reader can help? (Of course, as always, it would have been useful to know the make and model number!)

In my experience - the ONLY solution for this problem is to buy a Digital TV and make sure the remote is easy to use. I tried to teach my mother to handle a separate Freeview receiver but it cost me a fortune in petrol, as I had to keep returning to fix various "faults" (finger trouble). On one occasion I made a 300 mile round trip because the Freeview box had fallen behind the TV and had knocked the fly-lead out of the aerial wall socket on its way down. Try diagnosing that from "my picture is all snow" on a telephone conversation!

In the end she bought herself a new Freeview TV.

We live and work in Prague, Czech Republic Europe for the US Gov and have an AFN satellite receiver set-up for the Hotbird satellite. It is a Cisco D9865 receiver with a single LNB dish installed on the roof. My question is in regards to us wanting to replace the LNB with a Quad type LNB so we can hook up four receivers using this one dish. What would be the best Quad LNB to purchase for this installation? The dish is a circular style dish and looks to be approximately 24" in diameter, but we will have to get a local dish rep to go up on the roof for this installation because the roofs over here are very steep, and I do not have the equipment to go up there myself. Can you suggest our best option and possibly point me in the right direction for purchase through Internet services using a Visa credit card? Thank you and have a great day.

Respectfully, Jerry Praha Czech Republic Europe.

Hi, Jerry.

Unfortunately, you haven't told me what the existing LNB is. We sell only "Universal" LNBs. If that's what you need, we can offer a choice of 40 mm neck fitting or C120 flange. Whichever matches your dish fittings.

See Invacom LNBs here: http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page1a.htm#invacom

We accept credit cards but there's a £100 limit if your card is US registered.

This might be useful:

<http://www.afneurope.net/NewAFNDecoderSetupGuide/tabid/1231/Default.aspx>

It does look as if you need a universal LNB but please check carefully before ordering.

Hi, Sue. You omitted the question mark and the model number but I don't think it affects the answer:

Delete the timer and reset it for the single programme.

Hi Martin

I have used silicone grease to cover all the fastenings on my new Triax satellite dish. As you know there are 4 screw heads visible on the face of the foil. Would it be okay to cover these with silicone grease ? I take it that the grease would not affect the signal ?

Many thanks.

Regards

Ken

Hi, Ken.

Silicone grease contains no metal so it can't affect the signal.

However, I personally wouldn't use silicone grease in this way. Although it's waterproof, it collects dust and the whole lot eventually washes away in heavy rain. It's better to limit its use to screw/bolt threads and to connections that are protected by self-amalgamating tape or in a splash-proof housing.

I would use paint instead. However, to minimise corrosion around bolt heads, I would push the bolt through a "blob" of "Blu-Tack" to make a collar. Tightening up the bolt will squeeze out the excess while leaving air gaps filled. The "Blu-Tack" can also be spread across the bolt head to protect it.

The car industry uses something called "Seelastic" in the same way. It is placed between panels to be bolted together and around screws and bolts. It is white, rather than blue. (Don't confuse this with the various white "Blu-Tack" copies such as "White-Tack". These are, in my experience, not suitable for use outdoors.)

Hi there

I'm just enquiring to see if you still offer your services on the replacement Thomson Sky HD PSU and what the quickest way would be to obtain one.

Many thanks

David W.

Hi, David. Please click http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/psu.htm

Scroll down to "Your options".

(He placed an order - thanks, David.)

I have a Thomson Sky HD box. It has gone faulty. The red light is permanently on. I have tried the software update without success. it does not recognise signals from the remote control. I believe the power supply is usually the problem. Can you give me a price of a replacement power supply.

thanks Colin

Whilst watching live or recorded programmes, If I press rewind and then play, it does not start in the same place. The image will either jump forward or back a few seconds. This is difficult to explain!

There seems to be approximately 5 second gaps between were it will play depending on where I stop rewinding or fast forwarding.

Before this I had an Amstrad DRX280 which died. Can you recommend the most reliable Sky+ box. Is there an alternative to Pace, Amstrad and Thomson?

Regards,

Dave

Hi, Dave. The Thomson is generally reliable once you've fixed the PSU.

See http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/thom_psu.htm

If you want better reliability, buy a new Digibox every two years.

Sky supplies only Amstrad now so I think we'll be selling a lot of kits!

Dear Martin,

Just wanted to check if I can order a Thomson PSU in Mallorca ?

We don´t have any problems with Amazon or Argos delivering to our house here so hopefully whatever was causing you problems in the past is now sorted.

I very much look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

Peter

Hi, Peter. We don't like to ship an exchange PSU outside the UK because, if it gets lost, we have no way to replace it. Genuine Thomson PSUs are no longer available. Having been "bitten" twice, we prefer not to take the risk.

However, if you want to take the risk, go ahead and place the order and post your PSU to us.

i would like to watch french teli in England.

i understand I have to tune into atlantic bird 3 satellite.

Can you tell me if this is possible, what channels i might get, and what I would need to buy.

I don`t want to buy all the gear and then find i can`t recieve it.

Sorry, Margie, but I don't know and I don't have time to research this for you.

Post your question in any satellite TV forum and French speakers will be glad to help.

Equipment made by: Thomson SKY+ HD 500 GB

Model number on label or rear panel: none

What I want to know (plus any other relevant information):

I am gradually losing channels, mostly HD. Sky support checked all settings with me including signal strength and quality and all seems OK and cannot provide an answer. I have checked the signal strength again several times and occasionally one or other signal has zero bars but even with 70-80% quality on both signals the channels are not available.

The problem started with Sky 3d being pixelated. I found at that time that if I selected Vox Africa (218), which is one channel above Sky 3D then used the 'previous channel' button Sky 3d came up, perfect picture and would stay on indefinitely but if I picked Sky 3D from the guide or by channel number then it was pixelated or gave 'No Signal'!

The problem has now got worse and nothing will get Sky 3D or the other channels below. I just get 'No Satellite Signal'.

The missing channels are currently Sky 3D, Sky News HD, Sky Family HD, Sky Thriller HD and Bloomberg. I have not checked all channels so there may be more.

Can you help.

Thank you.

Andy J.

Yes, it will be the usual power supply fault. Easy to fix.

See http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/thom_psu.htm

If you have any specific questions, please state the model number.

Hi,

I was looking at your faceplates which use the straight through "F" barrels. I see that you supply these with 2, 4 and 5 connectors, however, just to be difficult, I need a single gang faceplate with 3 "F" connectors.

Is this something that you can get hold of?

I am an installer, so may well be looking for quite a few of these.

We might be able to make them.

Failing that, are you able to supply the nuts that go on the F barrel's (looking at the site, I know these can be added to an order if you are purchasing the barrels from yourself) as I don't mind making my own, however I think it would be easier to mine gold in my back garden than find a supplier of these nuts!

That's easy. Go to http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page7.htm#adapt

Set quantity of F barrels to zero or whatever you need.

Set quantity of nuts to whatever you need.

Click "Add to Cart".

Hello Martin

OK so your ebay bit is brand new.

"BUT" you can NOT increase the Quantity i.e.: 3 off

Sorry, I don't understand. You'll have to run it by me step by step. But first please try a different browser in case that's the problem.

http://www.satcure.co.uk/buynow/page01.htm

Click the "Buy Now" button.

Change the quantity on the shopping cart page.

Click "Recalculate".

Works fine for me!

Martin,

Have you heard that BBC and ITV are going to move away from Astra2d and going onto a "spot beam" so will be impossible to get overseas ?

It looks like anything further away from Spain will have to be satisfied with the rubbish of CNN and soon no BBC / ITV / Sky News ??

Rgds

Nick

Rumours abound. I'll believe it when it happens.

We can't receive them here without a 5.5m dish anyway!

We watch F1 on the BBC feed. (But not for much longer now that Sky has the monopoly!)

But I have other ways to get my fix of TV programmes without using a dish!

eBook name: Piping TV

Hi, I successfully downloaded this eBook, yet upon briefly reading it I can see no reference made to Freesat (only Freeview and Sky). Therefore, for me, the information supplied is not useful.

Could I please request a refund. I have deleted all copies of the eBook named above.

Many thanks.

Refunded as requested.

I'll update the eBook to include Freesat soon. A matter of getting a round tuit!

Freesat receivers have no simple way to pipe TV around the house or to use a remote control, so we developed a kit for them. See

http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page3.htm#freesat

Hi Martin,

Thank you for refunding me for my eBook just now (ref: no mention of Freesat in it). Thanks also for the link to the kit you have made to pipe Freesat around a house. My question is about that kit.

I live in a new build townhouse (which I believe has a communal sat dish). In my lounge I have a wall plate with 2 satellite outputs (SAT1 and SAT2). It also has TV output, Radio output, and a Return socket (a female TV socket). Upstairs in the airing cupboard I have a mains-powered distribution/booster (REMOTELINK 120D) which has a single input (F-type connection) and dual outputs (F-type connection). I presume this distributes a signal from the Return in the lounge to both bedrooms. In each bedroom there is a 'TV' wall plate.

I plan to use your kit to allow me to watch and control the Freesat (Humax FOXSAT-HDR in the lounge) from the master bedroom. I don't currently have a TV in the second bedroom so we can disregard that for now.

Can you please confirm your kit is suitable for my application?

Also, will the kit (including the magic eye) work via the existing cabling in the walls, or will I have to run any more cables from the bedrooms upstairs to the lounge downstairs?

Lastly, the kit says I will also require coaxial cable... Just the cable, or cable and end-connectors?

Many thanks.

Matthew

Hi, Matthew.

Unfortunately, as you don't seem to have a wiring diagram or information regarding the type of cable installed in your house, I can't guess whether our system will work.

As regards cable, you'll require double-screened cable and connectors suitable for your wall sockets (if used) and TV.

Freeview Problem

  • Transmitter: Winter Hill (N. West)
  • Type of TV aerial: Contract aerial
  • Group of TV aerial: Impossible to determine
  • Location of TV aerial: In loft
  • Height of TV aerial: 2 metres
  • Type of TV aerial cable: Newish cable
  • Freeview Make Model: SAGEM ITD 58G
  • Type of amplifier: None
  • Type of socket: I don't have a socket
  • Fault History: Fault began recently
  • My location is: WA7

I am missing a couple of channels then if I re-aim the aerial I get them but miss out on a couple of different channels there does not seem to be a happy medium to get all of them at the same time?

my loft aerial shares the loft space with the usual junk and a triple aluminium ladder could this be the problem? although it hasn't bothed it since the digital changeover just since our freeview-recorder died

and started using the Sagem(a standby) till we can get another freeview-recorder.

I get most channels fine BBCs 1, 2,ITV etc. but if I tweak the aerial to get BBC 3 OK but Ideal world breaks up (like a badly aimed sat dish) then tweak it to get ideal world OK BBC 3 breaks up.

Best Wishes Dave

My guess is that you are picking up signals from Winter Hill, Storeton and Moel y Parc. This is confusing your receiver and you might find that it is putting the same channels (but stronger) in the 800 channel numbers.

You could try tuning in Winter Hill multiplexes manually, on UHF channels numbers 54, 55, 58, 59, 62 if your receiver provides a manual tuning facility.

If that doesn't work then I'd suggest you buy a "group A" aerial. Mount it with its elements in a vertical plane and aim it at Storeton, on a compass bearing of 273 degrees. Make sure it's pointing through the thinnest section of roof (e.g. tiles not brick), and that there's no metal in the way. That should certainly fix the problem.

However, please note that, in my opinion, Sagem is a cheap brand and not very reliable. I hope you find otherwise.

I live in Edinburgh and have a Panasonic G20 with built in freesat and I want to be able to pick London area TV. What dish and size, LNB and cable do I need, thanks, Ron

Ron M.

I would recommend a zone 2 Sky minidish (70 cm wide), as a minimum, or a slightly larger dish if you want to minimise signal loss in bad weather.

There's a significant different between a standard LNB and one for a Sky minidish, so the LNB should be chosen to match the dish and should have as many outputs as you need (or more, if there's a possibility you'll need more in the future).

Cable choice is discussed here:
http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/cable.htm

You'll save time and money if you do your research thoroughly before ordering anything.

I bought a SF10Kit via Trademe.co.nz and the seller's listing said, "It can also Measure/Indicate normal TV VHF+UHF Freeview signals (ALL frequencies at Once) with a suitable power supply+adapter & DC Blocker We have Band Filters available "

My question is: 1.)what is involved in receiving/testing for DVB-T using the SF10 2.) is it worth buying additional items through the NZ store, or should I just order a "Digital TV Freeview terrestrial Signal Meter" through your site

Terry

Hi, Terry. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with your "SF10Kit", nor the transmission systems used in New Zealand.

I live on the Costa Blanca which is a difficult area for reception. . We have a 2.4 metre dish and a Pace/Skybox and all working fine. I have 2 outlets on the LNB and wondered if it possible to add a Freesat box to this outlet and run to a bedroom so I can escape some of my wife's "soaps". I hope this will be OK so main question is " have you a recommendation for a receiver? An old Panasonic Skybox I tried wasn't that great and kept locking up. Many thanks . David

David H.

Hi, David. The (obsolete) Pace BSKYB2600 is still the best for weak reception areas, with a quad-output Invacom LNB. With a £20 "FreesatFromSky" card, it will get you the Freesat channels.

If you need to record (you don't say) then you'll have to try an actual Freesat PVR. We have a choice of two but I have no reports of their performance in fringe reception areas.

Hi Martin,

I've got a new Sky MK4 Zone 2 dish (may old 80 cm one has rotted away) and

need to fit my 40 mm Quattro LNB to it.

So far I can't find a suitable holder to fit the LNB to the new dish.

Do they exist and do you sell them?

Thanks,

Colin

Possibly but Quattro LNBs are designed to "see" a circular dish so the performance on an oval Sky dish will be way below optimum. I'd advise you to buy a dish to match the LNB.

I recently bought a DG40RX Digisender from ebay but there were no instructions included and I am having probs installing it (I'm past my sell-by date and not up to scratch with latest technology!)

Would you know where I can by a manual for this thing?

Hello, I have 60 cm dish and an LNB with only one output (we only have permission for one small hole through wall from landlord) and I have looped the back of the HDR box as indicated in the instructions.

I have used dishfinder to locate the angles for Astra 2 at 28.2E.

My problem is (I am using a satellite finder) that the signal is hyper sensitive. I can have 100% strength and 75 quality but then it will just drop to 0 with the slightest movement, even of the cable. I have followed your videos so am sure I have wired it up all OK. I did manage to click stop on the box search when I had signal, it wouldn't tune Freesat but it did do a manual tune and stated it was 28.2E but it only found German channels.

I don't understand why it's so sensitive. Do I need a bigger dish? the forums I have been on indicate a 60 cm dish should work from here. Hope you can help, this has been going on for nearly 3 weeks.

Paul

Hi, Paul. The dish must be aligned to an accuracy of better than one degree - bearing in mind that the satellite is 24,000 miles away. Pretend that you are trying to illuminate it with a laser beam.

If cable movement affects it, you may have a bad connection or faulty cable.

German channels will be coming from Astra-1 not Astra-2.

BTW do you know that twin WF65 "shotgun" cable fits through the same 10 mm hole as WF100 cable?

Hi there, I live in Switzerland, and was wondering if you can provide me with a RELKIT for my Pace Sky+ box

Regards, Cliff

I suppose we could put together a capacitor kit but we've had no reports of failure.

Also, do you realise that the TDS470N has no separate PSU? It is an integral part of the main board, requiring a fair bit of dismantling.

Why do you want a kit. What are the symptoms? (Please describe without using the words "dead" or "faulty". I need to know what you see and hear.)

Hello Martin,

hank you for the fast response. I realise that the device has no separate PSU. The only problem is that the hard disk does not spin up. ( no planner or anytime visible in the menu) I have checked the disk itself and it seems OK. I have also tried another disc in the box - same result. I noticed that one of the Capacitors has a badly swollen top, so I remembered back to when I purchased a RELKIT for my old Grundig box. I thought while I have the box apart I might as well replace the lot if possible, so looked on the SatCure website but could see no mention of a similar kit for this box.

No problem if you don't do it, I'll buy them locally but I thought it was worth asking you first.

Ah, well, a badly swollen top is good evidence. Capacitor failure in a Pace is unusual. They learned their lesson in the days of analogue when I was making a small fortune from "Pace kits". Amstrad never really learned, despite my email discussions with Alan Sugar. He just kept repeating the mantra "capacitors last 12 years".

Anyway, if you tell me the PCB designation (like "C51"), the capacitance, voltage and dimensions we might have one in stock. If you want to replace them all, let me have a list. It's a good idea to let me know the diameter and the *available space" diameter, if larger, because we like to supply uprated ones where they will physically fit. Also need to know the available height.

My location is: Ilkley near Leeds LS29

Ilkley will convert to a digital TV signal very soon. I currently have a mast top amplifier for my analogue signal. Will this amplifier be OK for digital. If not what do I have to fit.

Many thanks

Frank

Hi, Frank. You haven't provided enough information. Please use the email form designed specifically for Freeview questions.

Response:-

  • Transmitter: Emley Moor (York's)
  • Type of TV aerial: Contract aerial
  • Group of TV aerial: Impossible to determine
  • Location of TV aerial: Outside
  • Height of TV aerial: 10 metres
  • Type of TV aerial cable: Old cable
  • Freeview Make Model: Built into Panasonic TV
  • Type of amplifier: On aerial mast
  • Type of socket: Unknown socket

Frank, there is no possible way that you are receiving programmes direct from Emley Moor with a contract aerial. You must be receiving from a local transmitter and, to do that, you aerial most be vertical, not horizontal. Most likely you are receiving from Wharfedale on a compass bearing of 82 degrees but you may be using Addingham on a bearing of 296 degrees.

Emley Moor is on a bearing of 163 degrees but it's on the opposite side of your hill.

The good news is that you should not need to change anything. The aerial should work and so should the amplifier. Switch over begins on September 7th and ends on September 21st.

Unfortunately, you will not receive all of the available Freeview programmes from the local transmitter and I don't see any possibility of receiving them from a distant transmitter. However, you'll have a greater choice of channels than at present.

As your coaxial cable is old, you may need to replace it with modern double-screened cable (also any wall sockets should be screened) IF you find that you suffer from interference (pictures breaking up).

If you want more channels, look at getting a dish and a Freesat receiver.

Martin

Have a Sky Pace digibox, about 8 years old, not HD. Use this in Spain via satellite dish, works well. Have also a Dark Box, HD.

Want to switch between the two boxes, have tried a non powered splitter, signal not good enough.

To the best of your knowledge, will your Fringe two way booster allow me to get a reasonable signal to both boxes? If yes, how many attenuators will I need with the booster.

Many thanks for your help, and congratulations on the quality of advice on your site.

Regards

Terry

Hi, Terry. Apologies but I don't know what a "Fringe two way booster" is. As far as I recall, Fringe don't make anything for satellite TV so you may be referring to a terrestrial aerial amplifier.

I'm confused by your mention of "switch" then "splitter". You can't use a splitter for an LNB signal. You can use an LNB switch but it will lose at least 4dB of signal (i.e. more than 50%).

There's a possibility that a linear (not "equalised") LNB amplifier might overcome losses in an LNB switch but it will add its own "noise" to the signal, which won't be good if you are in a fringe reception area (you don't say - in Barcelona it might be fine. In Alicante, a potential disaster). Depends also on cable type/length.

Frankly, the only sure way to feed two receivers in a poor signal area is by installing a quad-output Invacom LNB.

However, it's difficult to advise without full information. For satellite TV questions you should use the satellite TV email form, which will ask you for the appropriate details.

Martin,

Before I start I am a sparky so I have a little knowledge but it is limited.

My Existing Equipment:-

  • Samsung Virgin V+ HD box in lounge
  • DVD Player Lounge
  • Sky HD box lounge (no longer subscribe)
  • Non DVB TV lounge (Samsung)
  • Samsung Virgin Standard Definition Box in Conservatory
  • DVB TV conservatory
  • DVB TV Kitchen
  • DVB TV Main Bedroom
  • Non DVB TV Second Bed
  • Non DVB TV Third Bed with Freeview Box (very old)
  • Existing Chimney Mounted Aerial about 30 years old (fallen over but still working OK for analogue and some digital)

We live quite high on Sedgley Beacon and have a clear line of sight to the Sutton Coldfield transmitter.

Existing set-up I use the Virgin V+ box for the lounge independent of other TVs, the Virgin SD box in Conservatory independent, and I use the RF out and RF2 out of the Sky Box for the other TVs by swapping leads behind main TV as required. All coaxials to rear of main TV.

What I want to do if it will work is replace my chimney aerial (think I need either band B or W) to serve a Triax DDU in the loft. Bring the twin coax from my sky dish to the LNB inputs on the Triax DDU (intend to change LNB to Quad in future for Freesat also) and then distribute with new better quality coax to the other rooms. Also want to facilitate future DAB/FM Radio connections so allow for diplex outlet plates.

Not sure how I can distribute the Virgin and DVD from lounge I assume I can daisy chain the Scarts into a Scart to RF modulator and then send the modulated RF to the Uplink to the Triax DDU (not sure if possible with the V+ HD box when in HDMI mode). Could quite easily relocate some kit and use the virgin SD box as the main plate with the uplink as this definitely has a working Scart and RF out. Want to be able to use Magic Eye or similar remote controls to control virgin and DVD if possible.

Hope all that makes sense without being too long winded.

I will upload a sketch of my thoughts to your site.

If you can advise me what is needed I can order from you online, do I need to check signal quality with a meter for you to be able to advise.

Regards,

Stephen

Hi, Stephen. Thanks for the comprehensive explanation. This is outside the scope of my usual "2 minute free reply" as it involves a cable TV question, which I can't fully answer without hours of research. Since you are in the UK with cable TV and I'm on Crete without, I'm going to let you do that research.

I seem to recall that some or all Virgin cable TV boxes switch off the Scart in HDMI mode but you need to check this yourself by connecting a TV via Scart. I also think there's no internal RF modulator so you are probably correct about needing an external modulator, but please check.

You might be able to use our "Piping Freesat" kit, since this solves a similar problem:

http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page3.htm#freesat

I'm happy to help you with this, since it would be nice to offer a turnkey kit to "Pipe Virgin TV around the house" but you are going to have to do your own research.

If you can sort out what you need then we'll be happy to supply it! You could start with the kit then let me know what else is required. Probably only an extra connector or two, which we can supply for free in return for your feedback.

You'll also require an additional RF modulator if you want the DVD in the chain. To be honest, this is an additional complication and it would be cheaper and easier to buy a cheap DVD player for each TV. You'd also get much better picture and audio quality, bearing in mind that RF distribution provides only mono audio.

As regards the aerial, I'd advise using the Vision V10-040. In theory, Sutton Coldfield requires a "Group E" aerial. In practice, a wideband aerial will be fine and we haven't found anything better than the V10-040.

I have a new MTI QUAD LNBF and a new SKY MK4L quad.

In your opinion which is best for using with a Zone 2 dish ?

See http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/lnb.htm#bestlnb

When fitting a quad with the adapter I found there is a little plastic pin on the bottom of the adapter which stops it slipping into the tube of the Triax Zone 2 dish - should I cut this off ?

Yes.

Hi

I have a quad LNB on my sky dish, one is connecting to my sky+ HD and other connecting to my neighbours, if I switch the LNB off from my Sky box will it affect the neighbour.

Cheers

Mathew

Hi, Mathew.

Unless the LNB is faulty, switching off your LNB power won't affect the neighbour. Its effect is no different from disconnecting the LNB cable or switching the Digibox power off at the wall socket.

However, I would point out that sharing an LNB with a neighbour can be potentially dangerous if his house is on a different mains phase from yours. The connections would need to be earth bonded by a qualified electrician.

Hi Martin,

I am looking for an RS232 to VGA OR an RS232 to S-video cable/adapter.  Do you supply any or do you know where I can get one.

Thanks for your help with this.

Yours Sincerely,

Patrick

Sorry, I can't imagine how this could possibly work. Why would you want to do it? RS232 is a serial interface standard, whereas S-video is a video interface standard. There is no common reference between the two. It's like asking for an adapter to connect your telephone to a mains power socket. It's not going to achieve anything.

If not can I make one up.

Only you can answer that. ;-)

Hello. I have just upgraded to the latest Sky plus hd box from my ancient pace digibox. I use a TV link 'magic eye' for a second TV in the bedroom. The problem I have is that the remote will now only change the channel when I stand in certain areas of the bedroom (mainly when I hold it high at arms length). This is bizarre as it worked fine before the new box was installed.

  • 1. All connections have been checked.
  • 2. The picture is fine and light illuminated on TV link.
  • 3. Both new and old remotes work when I get them in the right place.
  • 4. I have moved the eye away from TV but no difference.

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Mac

See http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/tvlink2.htm

Download and read the instructions AND the free guide.

Work through the troubleshooting list. Most likely the new (unknown model) Sky Digibox is more susceptible to interference but it may simply be faulty.

For future enquiries, it would be useful if you could find the model number - usually on the label underneath and usually beginning with "DRX".

Hi,

about to sign up to SKY HD +...with two room SKY installation.

however I want to make wiring of cabling and phone cabling as unobtrusive as possible which I appreciate SKY engineers are not paid time to achieve. I am proficient at most DIY matters and feel confident of being able feed and lay all wiring through roof space and under floors etc. and drilling external walls where necessary.......To essentially have all cabling and telephone wiring in place so SKY engineer only needs to make his/her final connections including connecting to the dish SKY will supply and fit....I have allowed for more than enough coaxial cabling so as to allow SKY engineer loads of flexibility on external wall location(I have looked at neighbouring houses with SKY so feel confident re general correct location of dish).

What I think I require to purchase are;

1..60 meters of WF100 cabling suitable for SKY+HD operation.( to be split into two lengths each of 30 meters.

2..fittings to end of cabling to connect to SKY+ box/boxes?.. although SKY engineer may supply/fit those?

3..box of 7 mm black clips.

4..2 x internal wall grommets.

5..10 meter extension telephone kit including wall box.

6..20/25 meter extension telephone kit including wall box.

Any comment / suggestions before I place an order.

Regards

Derek

Hi, Derek. For Sky+HD you need two cables to each Digibox so twin WF100 might be more convenient for part of the run. For the indoor runs that you want to be unobtrusive you could use twin "Shotgun" WF65 instead - maybe in white. Connecting two types of cable together (with threaded connectors) shouldn't cause any signal loss. Or you could use twin 'F' wall plates.

Sky installers might not have the correct 'F' plugs and ours are very low cost so I suggest you buy the correct ones for the cable(s). Note that Sky installers have no engineering qualification so don't expect too much of them. Be sure to order the correct size clips for the cable, too.

The longest cut lengths of cable we can supply is 30m. If you need longer you'll have to order a reel.

Martin

firstly many thanks for the promptness and help.

However given that my natural bent is always to go the easy route and that "joining cables" sounds like additional work is there any reason why I cannot just purchase all the cabling as spec twin "Shotgun" WF65?... rather than two different specs and requiring to join them?

Guess I am likely just demonstrating my ignorance of the subject?

Also if all works as I plan the internal cabling will be 95% hidden in attic and under floors.

As stated on our web site, WF65 has twice the signal loss of WF100.

Please read all about cable. We provide all this information without charge to empower you to make the most appropriate decisions based on actual knowledge rather than guess work or what the guy down the pub told you. A few minutes spent reading it could save you money and hassle.

http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/cable.htm

Perhaps my best bet is to buy two of your "kits" at 30 meters?... twin shotgun WF65?.. so meaning I would get the correct clips etc.?.. are the correct "F" plugs included in the "kit"?

I don't know what kit you are referring to. If you have a question about a specific product, please provide a link to it and/or the product stock code (from the shopping cart - click "Add to Cart") and its description.

We offer cable with or without plugs to suit, fitted or loose. Take your pick.

(He didn't order. Sometimes I wonder why I bother.)

Dear Sir / Madam,

I have bought stuff from you in the past and came across your help support and wondered if you could advise. I have just got fed up with my aerial and satellite set-up so have rewired everything. I purchased the Triax Beam 52 aerial as well as a Triax outlet box which has 2 x 304255 (F-Connector) and 1 x 304265 (2 F-Connector, 1 TV Aerial And 1 Radio). Now to make you understand I have both a SkyHD box as a blue ray writer freesat box so need all 4 cables.

My confusion is with the 4 in one with 2 cable connection on the back. I understand about combiners but am a little confused as I can only seem to find ones that have say one LNB in and one TV AERIAL in bringing it out to one cable. What I need I think is 4 inputs (SAT1/SAT2/TV/RADIO) and out of 2 cables to connect into the back of this module???????

Is there such a thing and also it work so one cable takes SAT1/TV and the other SAT2/RADIO or what combination is it.

Also some advice on the best sort of aerial cable to use, can I use Webro HD100 satellite cable which I have used for satellite wiring??

Your advice would be most helpful.

Thanks for your time and look forward to your reply

Regards

Martyn D.

Hi, Martyn. I sympathise with you because everyone has difficulty in understanding the concept of combining signals into a cable. Please read this page:

http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/combiners.htm

If you can understand the concept then you will also understand what you need to solve your problem. Possibly two pairs of triplexers or a pair of triplexers and a pair of diplexers.

HD100 cable should be fine but we don't stock it because I fail to see any advantage over WF100. it just costs more.

Hi, I Have Previously Had A Cable Box Attached To A Spare TV, This Was A Second Box That Was On A Splitter From My Main Box, I No Longer Have The Second Box But Wish To Connect The Cable To A TV , What Do I Need,Tracey.

Tracey T.

Hi, Tracey. Unfortunately, when you begin every single word with a capital letter it makes your message difficult to read.

In order to connect a length of cable to a TV you'll need a TV plug.

See http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/plugs.htm

Your two products:

A09351 75 Ohm "F" terminator for unused amplifier inputs. (Not DC blocking.)
C21173 75 Ohm "F" terminator for unused amplifier outputs. (DC blocking.)

Which is the correct one to use to simply waterproof unused LNB outlets on OCTO LNB

Tony

Hi, Tony. It doesn't matter, since no power comes out of an LNB.

However, we recommend using "Blu-Tack", here:-

I have a 90 cm motorised dish for FTA with DiSEqC 1.2 box

What is wrong with a single universal LNB?

What would you recommend instead, and why?

Regards Will.

There's nothing wrong with a single LNB. It would be impractical and pointless to fit two LNBs to a motorised dish. I don't understand why you are asking.

Hello Martin & SatCure

I'm hoping you can give me some advice.

I have freesat with a quad LNB, only 2 inputs being used currently, one into the lounge and one into my bedroom.

Last week the bedroom connection went completely, no signal, so I retuned but no difference. I noticed the wire was kinked at the back so thought I could just be a dodgy F connector. I striped down the F connector to exposed fresh new copper wire and refitted the F connector and taped up with Self Am tape using your smart guide on the website, plugged back in and all was good .. for about half an hour, when the signal went again. By unplugging and reattaching I can get 10 mins of viewing before the connection drops to no signal again, very annoying. While all this is going on the lounge connection is fine no problems at all so I guess I can rule out dish alignment as the cause?

I really don't know what I'm doing wrong, and why its OK then suddenly drops to no signal. Having 5 or 10 mins indicates to me that the signal is there but I just cant get the signal to stay but f connector seem fine and the box I'm using a cheap bush works fine in the lounge.

Does this scenario sound familiar and I'm I missing something fairly obvious as the cause?

Thank you in advance

Allan J.

You haven't told me the model numbers of your receivers or the fault history.

I recommend you test the other receiver in the bedroom. If the fault persists with that one, you can be sure that it is caused by the cable, connections, LNB or local interference.

One other possibility is that the bedroom cable to the LNB is too short. Some receivers don't like a signal that is too strong. But I don't see why it should have just started.

A final possibility is that your dish is indeed insecure or a bird is perching on it and blocking the signal. But you'd need a heck of a coincidence!

Dear sir,

I already have a Technomate TM 5200 CI receiver and a motorised dish and I receive about 9 free Greek channels. I do not receive Antenna 1 though and I would like to. Do I have to change my receiver to receive Antenna 1 and if so which ? Have you got it in stock and how much is it?

You mean ANT1 = ANTENA ?

Sorry, I know nothing about this but I think it's a subscription channel.

I also heard I can be connected to the Internet to receive a lot more channels like sigma alpha etc. If so what do I need for that and how much will it cost? Do you do installation as well?

Sorry, I know nothing about this and I don't do installation.

This has nothing to do with UK Freeview (digital terrestrial).

I have a good understanding of electronics

Hi Martin, I recently sent the message below to David at Satellite for caravanners, he suggested I talk to you.

I have recently had a second hand KVH R4 satellite dome fitted to my motor home.

It works well with the television stations, but being of the "older generation" I enjoy listening to Gold radio which it will not receive, although it does receive all the BBC radio stations and a few others, I used to get it OK with a stand alone dish.

It was suggested by the manufacturers that the Skew was wrong, I had it adjusted but to no avail.

Now someone has suggested a higher gain LNB be fitted under the dome. Before I go to this expense, I would appreciate your opinion. If you think another LNB would work, have you one in your store that would suffice. I will say that a replacement would have to have a 40 mm fitting, and also to be one with almost no vertical section where the cable screws on as space is limited within the dome.

Many thanks

Colin, Swindon

Hi, Colin.

Ideally, your problem needs to be investigated by a professional with a spectrum analyser. This could pinpoint the cause within minutes, rather than guessing and probably wasting a lot of time and money. I could tell you to buy our super xyz low-noise high-gain LNB to solve your problems - but I'm an engineer not a salesman and I don't lie.

A higher gain LNB will push out more signal (and noise) for the purpose of getting an acceptable level through a very long cable. I suspect that your cable is actually very short, so a high gain LNB could swamp your Digibox tuner, leading to worse reception. High gain is unlikely to help.

There are several reasons why you might not be receiving the signal from Eurobird transponder F2L (frequency 12.253 GHz):-

  • 1. Dish too small (depends on your location).
  • 2. Dome attenuating signal (try removing it).
  • 3. Incorrect LNB settings (focal position and skew).
  • 4. Cable damaged (e.g. kinked) or wrong type or bad connection.
  • 5. Digibox faulty.
  • 6. LNB unsatisfactory (poor performance at 12.253 GHz).

See http://sam-radford.me.uk/lnbs.htm

We can only offer only the LNBs that you can see on our web site, although, if you can find something more suitable, we may be able to order it for you. I guess the Invacom might fit:

http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page1a.htm#invacom

Please note that the technical information for the KVH R4 states that it's fitted with a "dual output LNB". I suspect it should say "twin-output universal LNB", which is different.

Hi. My sky box has stopped working. No power lights.

I checked fuse in plug, same problem.

I opened cover and in behind where the power cable plugs in, is what looks like a fuse with glass in between the silver ends. Inside the glass is a smoky looking solder which is spread over the glass.

I presume this means that the fuse is blown. I don't have a way to test it, but I could get a screwdriver tester from Homebase.

This machine does get hot, is it possible that the fuse blew for this reason rather than failure of other components?

If I need new parts can you advise what I need please.

And most importantly how easy is it to do?? I am not good at soldering. But I could probably get someone locally to do it for me.

Thanks

Ian

Hi, Ian. You will need to send the PSU for repair. See

http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page12.htm#amspares

On no account should you replace the fuse as that will make the damage worse.

My location is: Central France

I have recently moved to France and before I left someone gave me a Sky+ HD box and satellite dish. However, after my husband took the time to install it on our roof (he was keen to watch Match of the Day) he noticed that we didn't have the cable to connect the dish to the box.

After a bit of googling I think I've determined we need a twin coaxial cable with f connectors. Is that right and do you sell them?

Kind regards,

Julie

(PS- I'm not that bothered about Match of the Day so don't feel you have to rush your response!!!)

Hi, Julie I share your feelings about football and, for no extra charge, we'd be happy to slow down the order processing to give you a few more days of respite! ;-)

You do indeed need two cable lengths. They can be two single cables or one twin cable. Fitting the 'F' plugs is a breeze. See our instruction page here:

http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/fconn.htm

We can, of course, fit the plugs in advance but you'd have to unscrew two to pass the cables through the 10 mm holes in the wall.

Twin cable: http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page8.htm#WF100twinCUT

Don't forget to order clips to nail the cable down the wall.

http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page8.htm#clips

The LNB on the dish must have at least two outputs. You can't use any sort of "splitter".

The dish will have to be aligned accurately on the satellite. Not easy to do without a meter.

http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/satmeter.htm

I know nothing about football but I think you'll need a Sky subscription card sent to a UK address. It will have to be activated in your Digibox via a phone call to Sky and they must not know that you are outside the UK or the card will be disabled.

If you need more information see:

http://www.satcure.co.uk/book.htm#installing

Our local installer just installed a new Sky Zone 2 mini dish.

I have learned from your web site that what I have is not a MK4 dish ?

Are MK3 dishes still being manufactured ? Are the MK4 noticeably better ?

Cheers

Ken

The MK4 dish was designed with ease of assembly in mind. Sky is keen to reduce its costs, so helping the installer to shave up to 5 minutes off the installation time is quite significant.

I'm not aware of any performance difference.

If your installer has done a neat job and your signal strength and quality are around 50% then it should be fine.

I think we are still supplying some MK3 dishes but I never know what we're getting from one day to the next!

Can I use a rubber boot if I purchase a made up length of WF100 fitted with compression plugs? If not can you supply the cable fitted with boot ready to slide over the LNB connector? thanks.

Tom P.

If you order the boot and the cable, add a note in the "shopping cart", then hopefully it will be done.

Are you certain you need a rubber boot? Modern Sky LNBs don't require it.

I have recently bought a caravan which has an 'external satellite TV connection point'. This is then fed into a Labgear 3 way splitter model FJU603, (looks similar to your 2 way passive splitter in your catalogue A73203). Its then fed onto 3 F plug points at various places in the caravan. All works OK with a Freeview Feed, but not when fed from my satellite dish.

My satellite set-up all works OK with a direct feed to the PVR and if I isolate the splitter.

Reading all your material, am I right in thinking that you cant split the satellite feed that way and that it therefore wont work, or could there be a problem with the splitter.

thanks, Robin

Correct, satellite LNB feeds don't work properly with a splitter.

See http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/satindex.htm

Click on "51. Split Dish LNB cable for two feeds" (top right).

If this problem means that you don't need something from your recent order, you are welcome to return it for a refund.

I've noticed that all the diagrams in the "Piping TV" eBook have the terrestrial aerial plugged into the Digibox &endash; would this prohibit watching different digital TV channels on individual TVs in the event of a complete Digibox failure?

No, if the Digibox dies you simply unplug aerial in and RF2 out and connect the cables together to bypass it. (However, if a SkyLink compatible amplified splitter is in use, such as the T120, it will need a separate power supply for this to work.)

I recently purchased a audiolab loft box from you and now need to connect a CCTV DVR video output to the loft box CCTV input, Do I need an RF modulator to do this.

Thanks in advance

Andy

Hi, Andy. You bought a Labgear HDU681S from us.

If your "CCTV DVR" has no RF modulator then, yes, you'll need to add one.

HI Martin, I want to fit a twin TV wall plate to the underside of my caravan where it will be protected from the elements. I want to feed into it twin LNB leads from the sat. dish. I want push fit connectors for ease of removal. Would the " slim & fast" V33-12R TV connector do the job? Or is there a more efficient connection. I would prefer the slim & fast twin F plug plate but cannot find a male F plug to female TV plug converter. Is there such a thing? Many Thanks,

Patrick K.

Hi, Patrick. For LNB connections you must use 'F' connectors only. You can't use TV plugs or TV-F converters for satellite feeds because TV "Belling Lee" connectors were designed originally for medium wave radio frequencies and aren't even suitable for UHF TV, although we usually get away with it in the UK.

The only "Slim & Fast" plate with two 'F' connectors is the "V33-23PLUS". You can either ignore the TV socket or use a TV+SAT diplexer to connect a TV aerial as well as 2 LNBs.

My location is: Almeria Spain
Equipment made by: Humax Freesat

Live near Mojacar, Almeria, Spain, and for several months have experienced problems with reception - all times of year & day. Now much worse, and considering what to do.

Currently have Sky free to air with a Samsung LE40B530 Full HD Spanish spec TV. No reception on ITV (103), poor on many others, & frequently lost reception even when weather not at all bad! Believe changes to transponders have meant that we are now in poor reception areas of the footprints, & things will only get worse. Local dealers can only suggest upgrade to 1.3 metre dish - expensive & to my mind not an adequate uplift in diameter to offer much hope of "future proofing" it

Intending to change to Freesat, buying a Humax 500 GB PVR. There seem to be many slightly different models available? Perhaps it's just different shops being slap-happy about how they label the products they are selling and there are not alternatives around? Which model/variant to go for?

House wired with (3 cm ID)conduit from flat roof where dish is (rigidly) mounted - refixed it myself earlier this year as first step in resolving problems. Will need 20 metres of WF 100 twin satellite cable, leaving original(Televes T-100 PLUS Ref 2141 0132 m39) in place (nearly 10 years old) to supply the Pace sky box for old CRT Sony telly for bedroom. Have 2 year old Invacom 4 port LNB on 1.2 metre dish. Alignment of dish is extremely sensitive & slight weather variations now upset reception, whereas a year ago set up was pretty good.

Will use original cable to pull through new cable (plus string to pull it back afterwards).

Does my diagnosis/analysis seem sensible? Confirm receiver model, please. Any suggestions?

George D.

Hi, George. I'm not aware of any "changes to transponders". Those are not planned until 2012 and nobody can predict what the effect might, but it's possible that you'll need a larger dish then.

Anyway, your current problems have several possible causes and I suspect it's a combination of all of them:-

1. I'm not clear on your description of your cable. Exposed coaxial cable outdoors deteriorates so that, by the time it's about 5 years old, the signal loss becomes significant. The answer is to replace the cable and protect it from sun (and rain, if it occurs). As a minimum you should paint the cable but, if possible, run it inside a protective conduit where sunlight can't reach it. Avoid tight bend radii because the cable will become soft when hot and the central conductor can shift towards the outside, having a drastic effect on the signal.

See http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=904492

and http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/cable.htm

2. Unprotected connections on the LNB can let moisture in.

See http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/boots.htm

3. A professional installer in Spain told me that it's not unusual for an LNB to deteriorate in bright sunlight. The answer is to replace it. The replacement can be covered in foil (apart from the plastic cap) to reflect sunlight, or even water cooled. The plastic cap can be sprayed white to give some protection.

4. Your Samsung receiver may be faulty. Heat does bad things to electronic components.

5. Your dish may have moved or warped in the heat. This is not unusual with cheap dishes. You might be able to check it by placing its rim on a perfectly flat surface, but it depends on the dish type (you haven't told me except it's 1.2m). I use a plastic Channel Master 1.2m dish here on Crete. The local installer told me that it gives a better signal than the metal ones that he normally installs. The drawback is that it's difficult to fit more than one LNB (in case you want to receive Hot Bird or Astra-1).

I believe that the 1.3m dishes in Spain are only as good as a high quality 1.2m (e.g. Channel master) so you are correct about upgrading. If it's necessary, you may need to go to 1.5m.

6. Fringe area reception is greatly affected by humidity and clouds. If you are near the sea, this could be a consideration.

I don't know where Almeria is so I'll let you look at the map for suggested dish size:

http://www.satcure.co.uk/2d/

The second map is more accurate.

Bear in mind that satellite changes planned for next year could change this.

Choice of receiver is a personal one. I quite like Humax but they tend to use the unreliable "CapXon" capacitors in the internal power supply, so you'll probably come back to us for a repair kit in the future. (If you buy the Humax from us, we'll give you a free kit if required.)

Can you recommend a Freeview box that will run on 12 volt as well as mains? I tried a mains only one through an inverter, but the box blew up.

Jennifer O.

Hi, Jennifer. I'm fairly sure there isn't one. You must use an inverter.

The ones we sell are "modified sine wave", which are usually OK.

http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page17.htm#inverter

(I use one of these to run my laptop in the car.)

However, if you want to be really safe, I'd recommend you spend a lot more on a "Pure sine wave" type.

The HUMODKIT with GLO45P MAGIC EYE KIT was connected with CABWH4MM thin white WF65 single coax cable to 2nd TV run between rooms to test. The system was fully functional, OK in every respect, good picture and control of Humax via tvLink.

The CABWH4 was then fully installed as required, the TEL39A right-angle TV coax plug female and FPS4.8 SPECIAL F plug were removed and refitted.

Picture on 2nd TV is fine but the tvLink does not control Humax.

IR txs have been carefully placed. The DC output of TVlinkplus measured at 11.34v. At the connection for the tvLink the reading is 11.4v.

The tvLink disconnected from 2nd TV = still unable to control Humax

I have moved the TV, connected to the tvLink with a different cable and everything works fine.

I have read the instructions about decoupling the fly lead from the TV to tvLink, however it DID work in test and does work when the linking cable was substituted which suggests there is no issue with the fly-lead.

Suggests linking cable issue but DC voltage & picture is fine.

Not sure where to go from here.

Ian

You don't state specifically that the "magic eye" LED lights. I'm going to assume that it does.

If the voltage is reaching the eye, that indicates good DC continuity. If the Humax picture and sound reach the TV, that indicates good UHF continuity. Therefore I'd be looking for a source of interference.

Having cable running alongside mains cable or any other source of interference will prevent correct remote operation.

The "eye" itself is susceptible to interference from electrical and infrared sources. Eliminate all possibilities (energy saver lamps etc.)

I have recently had Sky+HD installed. I do not have an Aerial connected to the box. Can I run a cable from the RF out of the Sky box to a second TV and if so what will the second TV receive ?

Douglas L.

Hi, Douglas. RF2 output contains the programme currently selected on your Sky Digibox (with mono audio and mediocre SD picture suitable for a small bedroom TV). The Digibox could be controlled via a "magic eye" if you used the appropriate cable and connections.

IF you were to connect an aerial to the aerial input, then RF2 would pass the aerial signals to the second TV as well.

My location is: Agia Galini, Crete

Hi Martin,

I have a house in the south of Crete (Agia Galini). I understand that you are now based in Crete, so I was hoping that you could advise me if it would be possible to receive UK satellite channels on that part of the island.

Do you provide any installation or consultation services in Crete?

Regards,

Rory

Hi, Rory. We can receive a few UK channels with a 1.2m dish aimed at Astra-2 (28.2'E). We can also get Fox Movies and MBC movies (Arabic subtitles) from the BADR satellite, by using a second LNB.

With a Sky Digibox and FreesatFromSky card, it's possible to get ITV, CH4 and FIVE at present. This might change next year when a new satellite comes into use. With a Sky subscription, you can receive some Sky channels. I haven't investigated exactly which because I don't have (nor plan to have) a subscription.

It's not possible to receive programmes from Astra-1D without a huge dish (at least 5m).

Hi, I'm currently wiring a large kitchen with the DVD player and Freesat receiver approx. 25 meters from the TV, hidden. Would the OmniLink-Plus be suitable for extending my remote signal?

Aaron

Yes, it will extend the remote signal 25m if you use the correct cable and connectors. See http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page3.htm#omnilink

http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page3.htm#thincab

Make sure that your equipment is protected from kitchen heat and humidity and is well ventilated.

My location is: SG12 (usually)

I am on a narrow boat receiving Freeview through an IMAGE aerial and a 19 year old Maxview signal booster. Two TVs are attached, 60 ft apart. I wish to improve my reception and am interested in the Vision V10-040 product.

1) What are the dimensions of the aerial?

I don't have exact dimensions to hand but it's about a metre long, as stated on this page:

http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/best_aerial.htm

Can it fit easily on to the top of a 22 mm diameter aluminium pole?

Yes.

2) I need to make a connection in the 6 mm diameter aerial cable located on the exterior of the boat without actually attaching it to the boat. What is the best way of doing this?

I'm not sure what you mean but 'F' plugs are best for joining cables:
http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page7.htm#cables

If you need a quick disconnect method, you could add a push-on adapter:

http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page7.htm#adapt

http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/fconn.htm#pushf

3) Which signal booster would you recommend? My current Maxview seems to do little. It is powered directly from a nearby 12 volt socket. My aerial pole is extendible meaning that the signal booster can be up to 15 ft away from it.

Best regards

That depends on the length and type of cable. WF100, for example, loses around 15 DB per 100 metres (at the highest UHF frequency) so you'd need a 15 DB amplifier if your cable is 100m long and similar to WF100. If it was only, say, 20m long, the loss would be 3 dB and an amplifier would probably be unnecessary. In fact nobody makes a 3 dB amplifier.

See http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/cablespecs.htm
and http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/amps.htm

I realise I've given you a lot to read (and there's plenty more!) but please take your time to assimilate it. A little time spent on research could save you a lot of wasted time and money if you order the wrong things.

Hi

Would you please advise how could I record programmes from EUROBIRD satellite.

What sort of TV recorder do I need to buy?

I already got a Mondeal receiver.

Please help.

Thanks

Jose

If you mean the "Eurobird 1" satellite, it is co-located at 28°E with the Astra-2 satellites (used for Sky and Freesat).

So you have a choice of Sky+ Digibox, Freesat PVR receiver or FTA (free To Air) PVR receiver.

See http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/freeview.htm

Hi SatCure,

Current set-up:-

Televes DAT45 aerial with MRD and a Televes 8203 100 mA 12v PSU with 2 outputs.

Currently use both outputs, i.e. serving 2 TVs separate rooms.

Happy with signal quality.

My problem:-

I now need to add a 3rd TV in a further room. I assumed the simples solution would be to replace the Televes 8203 PSU with one that had 3 or 4 outputs. But I can appear to find either a Televes one or any other make.

Do you know if such a thing exists, or can you think of any alternative solution?

Sorry for the late reply. I read your message then got distracted and only noticed it again this morning while "cleaning my inbox".

Use an AP00090 passive splitter to feed the two shortest runs of cable from the PSU. That should work fine. If it doesn't, you could try an amplified splitter instead but I think you have plenty of signal so it shouldn't be necessary unless your cable runs are really long (> 50m).

http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page15a.htm#ysplit

I would like to use clip in modules into face place to TVs coax connection. Can you please email the part numbers. The cables laid are WF100.

Please also email part numbers for quality connectors into a distribution amplifier and cable / connector for tails from wall outlet to TV.

Also interested if you can supply F-type to RCA wall plate for sub woofer. Also interested to source component video RGB wall plate module (clip in single)

Kind Regards

Dinesh

Hi, unfortunately, I can't understand exactly what you want. You haven't stated what sort of connectors or whether male or female. However, everything we supply is on the web site.

Modular wall plates are here:

Can I collect items from you rather than pay postage?

Unfortunately, no.

  • Transmitter: Unknown/not listed
  • Type of TV aerial: Hi-gain Yagi aerial

  • Location of TV aerial: Outside
  • Height of TV aerial: 10 metres
  • Type of TV aerial cable: New fully-screened cable
  • Freeview Make Model:

I have a 4 year old professionally fitted Freeview aerial and an 8 year old SLX 4 way amplifier/splitter in the loft. The cable to the splitter comes directly from the aerial into the loft. The splitter outputs feed 4 T.V.s around the property all of which use Freeview. I am getting pixilation on most of my T.V.s. This does not happen all of the time, it varies from day to day. Is the set-up that I am using OK or do I need to purchase a different splitter/amplifier and if so which one and how much to supply? Many Thanks. Brian

Brian H.

Hi, Brian. As you say this fault began recently, then either something has changed with your local transmissions, or something has blocked the signal (new building, tree) or something in your system is failing. You need to determine which is the case by eliminating each possibility one by one.

I would not normally recommend using an SLx distribution amplifier instead of a masthead amplifier but, as it was originally working OK, you might as well stick with it unless it's faulty.

Unfortunately, I can't give any specific advice because you don't know what aerial you have or which transmitter it's pointing at, and I can't guess.

Dear Sir

I have bought a TV which I am hoping to now use. In my living room I only have the following lead - "Webro BskyB twin63 63-008A". There are no other ports or leads in the room or house generally.

This lead does not fit into my TV.

How would I get my TV to work - would I need a Sky Freeview box?

Is that lead of any use otherwise? If I don't want Sky, would I have to use an indoor arial (aerial)?

Thanks in advance

Ashley

Spell check: arial (aerial) should be aerial (arial (aerial) is a computer font)

Hi, Ashley. You seem to be describing twin CT63 "shotgun" cable, which is used to bring two connections from an LNB on a satellite TV dish. Assuming everything is in good order, you should be able to plug in a BBC/ITV Freesat Digibox, a Sky Digibox or a FTA satellite TV receiver and it will simply work.

I can't be more specific or comment on Freeview aerials because you haven't stated your postcode. For Freeview advice please use our terrestrial Freeview enquiry form. For satellite TV please use the satellite TV enquiry form.

Please read all the information on our web site

I wanted a quick talk about your Ultra Thin Coax.

I want to incorporate a short length <~3M into some furniture that has a LCD TV and SAT receiver/PVR embedded into it. WF100 is far too big and inflexible as the cable has some tight spaces to negotiate.

I would appreciate your experience as this Ultra Thin Coax seems unique to you. I assume that the special F connector is because of the small diameter of the cable.

Yes. You can buy WF65 twin cable but I believe we are the only company that will sell it as single. Its minimum bend radius is about 25 mm. It is easily kinked so you must be very careful when installing it and don't pull it tight around corners.

Specifications: http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/cablespecs.htm

Hi,

Hope you can provide me with some general information.

I currently have a new aerial fitted in the loft, which is connected to a very old 4 way amplifier / distributor. I need to increase this to a 7 way split throughout the house. Should I just replace the amp / dist with a new 8 way one or are alternatives solutions available ? The current cabling is the old brown type fitted 20 years ago (this cannot be replaced in existing 4 rooms as they are fitted behind the plasterboards). They are fitted with coaxial connections which can be replaced to F connectors if they are preferable.

Sorry, insufficient information. Please use the terrestrial Freeview form, which will assist you to give at least the bare minimum information that's needed in order to give you advice.

My location is: Edinburgh

I have a Panasonic G20TV with built-freesat and I want install a satellite system. I am considering a Triax TD88 dish, Belden Webro WF 100 cable, but I don't know which twin LNB to use. I am drawn to either a Inverto black Ultra, Smart Titanium 0.1dB or Technomate high gain 0.1dB or perhaps you may recommend some other make, your help would be invaluable, thanks

Ron M.

Hi, Ron. An 80 cm dish is fine for Edinburgh and you don't need to bother about the choice of LNB for dish sizes under 1.8m diameter. In any case, there is no such thing as a 0.1dB noise figure. It's marketing b*llsh;t.

See http://sam-radford.me.uk/lnbs.htm

and http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/lnb.htm

Hi

Is it possible to have a LNB with one down lead and then distribute it using a multiswitch or do you need and LNB with 4 outputs which you would feed into a multiswitch.

The reason I ask is that I would like to make freesat available in 6 rooms of my house and don't really fancy having 6 down leads off the roof.

I will be buying your eBook bundle about installing satellite television and piping TV around the home but I need to install the dish before the scaffolding around my house is taken down, so needed a quick answer.

Many thanks for your help in advance

Richard D.

Hi, Richard. A multiswitch requires 4 inputs.

See http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/multiswitches.htm

You can install it anywhere dry, such as the roof space.

Hi

My dish is an old Sky one 530 x 400 mm. LNB arm rectangular 31 x 21 mm approx. but supplying no signal. Would you have a LNB that would fit and provide an HD FreeSat signal. I was unable to find similar dimensions on your site.

Best regards

Harry

Hi, Harry. With an old Sky dish the choice of LNB adapter is determined by the inside dimensions of the arm.

Yours sounds like a MK3 to me.

See http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/quad_sky_lnb.htm

Hello. I am trying to find the least painful way to allow full control of a Sky box from a bedroom at the other end of the house, which is a pretty long run. I have tried a couple of videosenders but the picture is terrible (there is a solid wall between the two locations which must affect it). Running cable through the house would be really painful. I heard mention of a system that uses the mains cables to transmit a signal, do you sell such a thing, or a system I'm not aware of that gives a good signal and isn't really painful to install ? Many thanks, Andrew.

Andy

Hi, Andy. It seems to me that, not only do you want "full control" but you also want to see and hear the programme.

We don't sell anything that transmits through mains cables. You might consider a Netgear "Powerline" system but this works only with computers.

http://tinyurl.com/3pjxlpw

There's also the "Homeplug" and "Slingbox" systems but, again, they are designed to carry data between computers.

http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=657106

If you keep searching you might find a discussion that tells you how to achieve what you want but I suspect that it's going to turn out expensive and complicated and more painful than running a cable through or around the outside. Maybe you could simply get another Sky Digibox connected to the existing dish or a separate one?

I have a replacement sky+ box just installed

From the previous box the magic eye was working linked to two TV sets, and proper picture and remote control use.

Now with the RF2 on, using the replaced box, and the magic eye showing a red light there is no picture but just a blue screen on the link TV.

I have this time connected directly to the RF2 output on the sky+ box.

Note as there are problems only one TV is connected. But to make sure both TV sets have been tried singly and no Joy.

your help will be greatly appreciated.

Note I have used Global link products since almost year 2000 and no problems other than when then soldering of the connectors come off.

I have not long back bought two new eyes and used them for a few months on the previous box.

I hope that I was able to be thorough.

Regards

satish

At first glance it certainly seems that your Digibox must be faulty. But, before we jump to conclusions, I'd like you to download our troubleshooting guide and work through it.

See http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/tvlink2.htm

As you haven't bought from SatCure, this is the limit of our technical help. Best of luck!

This to thank you for a less than min consultation.

On checking through your documents as by the given link, my problem was sorted.

But if it helps for you to include the following solution here it is:

I had a RF2 red light on the magic eye but no picture.

So I switched off the RF2 on the box, unplugged the box, and restarted the box (this being a replacement box a few days old).

On full working box, re engaged the RF2 to on, switched off the box by unplugging.

Restarted the box, scanned the TV for programmes and all things were in order as the TV now was finding a new frequency from the box, which it did successfully.

Regards

I have a satellite dish in Portugal which uses a sky box to receive programmes. I have just purchased a new TV to take over there which has freesat on it. They tell me that if I buy a f connector splitter box plus another lead I will be able to use both systems from the same aerial without the need to disconnect and reconnect.

please advise which on your products I should purchase

thanks

David may

Hi, David. Freesat requires a dish not an aerial. You can't split the signal from the LNB on the dish. (Well, you can but it won't work.)

See http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/satindex.htm

Link: "51. Split Dish LNB cable for two feeds".

Unfortunately, I can't give you any specific information because you have omitted the make and model numbers of the receiver, dish and LNB.

Got a reel of PF100 cable from Screwfix but I want to source the F connectors from you. Screw on. not sure on the size needed and I'm not at the house with the cable so cant check the dia

Jon K.

Hi, Jon. Unfortunately, we don't stock PF100 so I can't check the fit but probably our "WF1FPLUG".

(If it is too loose, that would indicate that PF100 is marginally narrower and inferior to WF100.)

Hello - I have just installed your RELKIT33JS and it seems to have cured one issue that prompted me to do the change which was the power light flickering and the box would not turn on. Now after the upgrade the power light is stable but the unit still will not turn on and there is no hard drive activity.

I have put a meter on the power supply where the cable interconnects the two boards and seem to have all the correct voltages (as printed on the board) apart from the 38v pin which only reads 14v on mine.

I have checked the joints on the new install but can not see any problems so the question is do you have any other ideas as to what else is likely to have gone wrong or where to look next.

Thanks.

Rich

Hi, Rich. It's possible that the Hard Drive is faulty or the data corrupted. Connect it to a PC to test it.

Any other fault is not going to constitute a DIY repair so send the Digibox to Michael, quoting your order number in the hope of getting some discount.

Hi

I hope you can help me?

We have an aerial socket in the wall next to our Sky Plus Box and also an aerial wall socket in the bedroom. Is it possible to connect the main Sky box in the living room to the aerial socket and simply plug the bedroom TV into the aerial socket in the bedroom wall to pick up Sky in the bedroom?

I can only say "maybe". If the two sockets are connected together then it might work. If they are not connected directly together then it can't work. If you don't know, try it and see. It won't damage anything.

I understand it would simply show whatever happened to be on the TV in the front room. I have read all about the Magic Eye and Coax cable, but wondered if it were possible to use the aerial sockets to eliminate to need for a cable running directly from the Sky box in the living room to the bedroom.

If it does work, you are in luck. However, a "magic eye" probably won't work with the existing plates. Usually they have to be changed to a non-isolated type to allow current to flow from Digibox to "magic eye". The "fly-leads" also have to pass current. More info. on our web site.

Hope you can help, and many thanks for your time.

Kind regards

Rowena W.

If it doesn't work, you might consider installing our "ultra-thin white coaxial cable".

Hello, I have a Sky+ box but only 1 cable going from Dish Input 1 to the wall plate, so I need another one preferably with connectors fitted. It would need to be 2m. What do I need? Thanks, Paddy Moran.

Paddy M.

Hi, Paddy. Unfortunately, your information is too vague for a specific answer but I assume you'll need to replace the wall plate with one that has an additional "F" connection and you'll need a cable with "F" connectors from the LNB to the dish, and a cable with "F' connectors from the plate to the Digibox. Your choice of length and colour.

See http://www.satcure.com/accs/page8.htm#WF100cutSingle

and http://www.satcure.com/accs/wall_plates.htm

You might also need clips to hold the cable on the external wall and, instead of adding a single cable, you might prefer to replace the existing cable with twin cable.

This presupposes that your LNB has sufficient outputs. If it hasn't, then you'll have to change the LNB and maybe also the dish. All the information is on our web site.

I have ordered some cable, Fcons, cable clips etc. and entered my card details but your order entry process froze and the order confirmation page did not display. I went back into my cart but it said it was empty! No order confirmation email has been sent so far.

Please tell me if you can proceed with the details that I have provided or that I should re-enter the order and payment details and I will not be charged twice.

Hi, Gordon. If you have no order number then you did not complete the ordering process and we have no record of an order from your email address.

See http://www.satcure.co.uk/orders.htm#confirmation

We have received two orders since you sent your message at 19:19pm so I can safely say that there is no server problem. It was probably just a momentary glitch. Maybe your ISP dropped the connection to our server.

Dear Sir,

I live in sheltered accommodation and am trying to assist an 85 year old neighbour to retune his Bush TV model No: IDLCD32TV22HD. I have contacted the help team at helpscheme.co.uk, they are unable to help me because the equipment was not purchased from them, they referred me to tvretune .co.uk but they are not familiar with the model and referred me bushdigital.co.uk but the website has info only for 2 digital boxes.

The remote does not have a menu button, it has an install button but does not direct to a menu system.

Are you able to assist please by providing a procedure?

I have spent almost 3 hours searching the net for info without success, I can't find any info on the model and the neighbour does not have the guide.

Thank you.

Yours faithfully,

Gordon

Unfortunately, we have never sold this model and it is obsolete so we don't have access to a User Manual. It has not received good reviews. See

<http://www.ricability-digitaltv.org.uk/pages/products/idtvs/index.asp?Product=Bush%20IDLCD32TV22HD>

What I suggest you do is first to ensure that you have the genuine original remote control. If not, you'll have to buy one because copy remotes often lack critical buttons. Make sure you have the User Manual including tuning instructions. If not, you'll have to post a request in the various forums or order one from the manufacturer.

I am trying to view my sky hd box(2 years old)in my bedroom on a second TV by using an Antiference magic eye and using the already built in aerial cabling of a new build house.

All I get at the moment is a snowy black and white picture with no sound and no red light on the magic eye once RF2 is switched on. I do get a red light on the magic eye when it is plugged directly to the sky box.

To get a Freeview picture I did have an Antiference PSF 1200 12V 100 mA Masthead power supply connected to get a picture due to my aerial was inside my loft.

My question is : can I get a picture using the existing inbuilt cabling by using my current power booster with the magic eye. I was a bit unsure as it said 12v on the booster and the RF2 is 9v, or is it a case of having to run a new cable from the back of the sky box to to the second TV.

Thank you in advance for your reply.

Paul E.

Hi, Paul. unfortunately I don't know what you mean by "power booster" so I can't answer your question.

Unfortunately it is faulty as the red light will not switch one

We have another one which works fine so we are sure it is the device

Please advise at your earliest convenience

Kind regards

Neil

Hi, Neil. I'm sorry that your LED won't light. This is usually caused by incorrect connection (wrong way round) or by a badly soldered plug on your connecting cable, or other bad connection. It could also be caused by the TV set itself so be sure to check the "eye" without connecting it to the TV. For more details please read the PRODUCT INFORMATION links that we provided in your original "Keep-me" message.

I have a TV in bedroom 1 and I wish to install a TV in bed room 2 is there a external coax junction box that I can connect the existing coax into and then feed the 2 TVs with a coax.

Raymond B.

Hi, Raymond. Unfortunately, you omitted lots of information such as your postcode, type and height of aerial, type and length of coaxial cables, so I can't be certain what to recommend.

However, you might like to consider a masthead amplifier and splitter power supply:

I got very old sky mini dish and single LNB installed in 2000, and want to upgrade to quad LNB, can you recommend which upgrade kit I should choose? I live in London. thanks.

David H.

Hi, David.

There is actually only one choice of LNB for the Sky minidish, now. Our quad-output page was originally offering several types and I just realised the wording was very confusing so I have updated the two relevant pages. See

http://www.satcure.com/accs/easier.htm

I recently ordered from you 2 Triax single F connector wall plates (TR95S 304123). One has been installed and is working perfectly; the other has a faulty thread on one of the screws that secure the metal cover to the body of the cable housing.

Please can this be replaced?

Deryck L.

No problem, Deryck. I'll ask Sales to put one in the post to you. Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience.

Hi,

just a note to say thank you for the quick delivery to the South of France. Just stopped Sky and installed a new Humax Foxsat PVR for Freesat down here.

As I suspected your Inverto dual LNB is much better than my old one so I had to install two 6dB attenuators to reduce the signal here with a 80 cm dish for CH4 HD to work even after much LNB adjustment.

Thanks again for a very informative website and monthly BLOGs.

Rob

THANK YOU

Just a message to say that I am so impressed with the wealth of info on your web site that ensured that I really understood what I wanted before I ordered.

Also when I did order, the very quick delivery and the quality of the installation pack that you sent.

I had a little difficulty putting the aerial together as I was uncertain about whether I might damage it but I got a very fast technical reply and the Log40 aerial works brilliantly.

I have a wooded hill between me and Crystal Palace and have always had very poor signal quality, especially when it rained, but this is coming through clearly on all my equipment.

Thanks, John.

THANK YOU

What a wealth of good info you provide. You seem to have covered every angle possible. My Thomson is now back up and running which keeps everyone happy.

Robin
