My second cold has struck me down this month! I haven't had a sniffle for three years and now two colds in quick succession. I can't even blame the plane journeys from England because the first cold began before I boarded. Anyway, a friend brought me some "Jakemans Throat & Chest soothing menthol sweets". I've almost run out so, if anyone is coming to Crete from England, please do me a favour... White Knuckle Rides The flight back after Christmas was on the windiest day. The "Shuttle" plane from Manchester twice attempted to land at Heathrow and, each time, had to abort and zoom back into the sky, resulting in lots of white knuckles and a few people weeping! We landed safely at Luton, waited a couple of hours then returned and landed at Heathrow. Top marks to an excellent pilot who knew exactly what to do. The delay meant that we'd missed our flight to Athens and had to PAY for a later one (not happy about that, Aegian). Luckily, we have a friend in Athens who is a tour guide and speaks excellent English. We texted her and she replied to say that a taxi would meet us at the airport at 2:20 am and take us to the hotel. She had paid for everything. What a lovely lady! Next day we awoke at 9am and, after breakfast, she met us and gave us a guided tour of the new Acropolis museum before taking us to the Metro and seeing us onto the airport train. If you'd like your own personal guided tour of Athens (or the whole of Greece) you can contact Georgina here: http://www.greek-tours.co.uk The Real Internet Pirates In the USA, SOPA and PIPA have been pulled (for now). If implemented, they would effectively have killed off the Internet Forum as we know it and all blogs etc. that permit comments. Why? Because the bill would have made site owners themselves liable for all content - regardless of who posted it. So just one link to a naughty site could have landed them in court. More... And, in Ireland, the SOPA equivalent is looking inevitable. More... Piggin' Pugs! When we moved to this island we were forced to buy an old 1.6 litre Peugeot 307 because there wasn't another automatic within our price range. We ended up paying several thousand Euros for a shed that I wouldn't have given a grand for in the UK. But it was "Hobson's choice". Ever since we bought it, over 2 years ago, it has made interesting "noises", which varied between a sort of wheel bearing whine, on the open road, and a whimpering as I reversed in the morning. A mechanic friend took a look and told me that he thought it might be a pulley bearing, but couldn't be more specific. "Run it till it makes a noise all of the time, then you'll be able to pinpoint the cause," he advised. Anyway, it went quiet and I forgot all about it until last week. I had offered to collect some ladies from town, some 10km distant, and bring them to a luncheon party in our village. Just before I arrived, I heard a most awful rattling noise as if the crankshaft had snapped (a noise I remember well from my days of driving Austins with 'A' series engines!) However, the car continued to go and there was no loss of power. I stopped and lifted the bonnet. With the engine still running, I could see the crankshaft pulley wobbling, and assumed the bearing had broken. I managed to get my passengers to the taverna but advised them to get somebody else to take them home. I coasted several kilometres downhill to the nearest repair garage, left the car there, and got a lift home. The crankshaft pulley comprises an outer ring, with "V" grooves for the alternator belt, bonded to an inner hub with rubber to absorb vibration. As you can see, from the photo, there is no sign of any rubber. The pulley had been dragging the belt ring by metal-to-metal friction only! Update A new pulley cost 140 Euros and there was only one to be found in the entire country. It was sent from Thessaloniki in northern Greece on a Friday and arrived the following Monday. A new auxiliary drive belt cost 15 Euros and labour was 40 Euros. I guess I can't complain about the garage. The guy fixed our car as quickly as possible and phoned when it was ready. He also speaks excellent English. Note: I'm not posting on the AVforums very much nowadays. The owner wants me to spend hundreds of pounds on advertising and won't let me include SatCure links in my replies. So my participation is a waste of time, better spent on writing eBooks and designing new kits. An obvious use is feeding CCTV images for security or just to see what the kids are doing in the garden. Another is playing photos from a computer slideshow at a family gathering. Yet another is feeding music from the computer or ipod while the lady of the house is busy in the kitchen. She could also watch a recorded video. Basically you can feed a video or audio source to any or several TVs in a house simultaneously. How do we achieve this? I have done this by connecting RF modulators in series, recycled from redundant analogue satellite receivers. Each one is tuned to a different TV channel to allow several TV channels to be generated at the same time. By using parts from old analogue receivers (another source is old VHS players) which include modulators, power supply components and SCART sockets, we can keep the cost down at the expense of some mechanical ingenuity. It is possible to buy ready-made modulators from suppliers such as Maplin or SatCure, which are complete but more expensive. Both kinds, new and old may be mixed provided they have RF in and RF out sockets. The recycled units have the disadvantage that they will often tune only from TV Channels 30 to 39, whilst the ready built ones can be digitally set to many channels. It is wise, when daisy chaining the modulators, to allow 3 or 4 TV channels between each to avoid intermodulation problems (this is when the signal of one mixes with the signal of the next to give interference problems on another channel). It should be noted that the RF quality is not up to HD standards and the audio will be mono. However it is quite adequate for low cost CCTV cameras and background music or video. Practical considerations now follow. I have provided some pin outs taken from the circuit diagrams of common analogue satellite receivers. Note that, although they look the same, the pin outs vary, as do the supply voltages. If you are using other sources do check these points before you strip them down. I have found that the easy way to power a number of modulators is a DC power adapter from some redundant piece of equipment. Using a 3 terminal regulator chip (the 1 Amp variety is OK) we can achieve various non standard voltages which are adequate for our purpose by connecting a diode (or diodes) to the earth pin which will raise the potential of this pin above earth by a diode voltage drop (0.6 or 0.7V). In this way a 5V regulator could give an output of 5.6 or 6.2 V. Technically there are better ways of doing this but it works and the voltages don't appear to be too critical. Considering the video and audio, use the recycled SCART socket but be aware of the following. Left and right audio channels can usually be wired straight to the modulator audio pin. You may need a resistor to isolate each but I haven't found this necessary. The video I/P (=input) may need a 75-ohm termination resistor. If one video I/P is greater than the others, you will notice the difference when you change channels. When considering the RF modulator, if there are several in series, it is wise to remember that each has a gain of approximately 3-dbs so, with three in series, there will be a signal gain of 9-dbs. If you live in a strong signal area then it is possible that you could overload a following distribution amplifier. I haven't experienced this problem but possibly a good solution would be a 3-db attenuator after each modulator. The modulated video signals would also be attenuated but it would probably make little practical difference. How do we test our circuitry? It is obviously easier to do this in front of an accessible TV so that we can see the results of any changes. If it is a digital TV make sure it is switched to analogue. Switch on the test bar generator on your first modulator and put the TV on say channel 30. Now tune the modulator to the TV. You will see two vertical bars, which should be clear and well defined. You may see the two vertical bars on other channels but they will not be very clear. This is possibly due to too strong a signal overloading the TV. There will normally be a length of coaxial cable between our circuitry and the TV and this will reduce the signal so it should not be a problem in use. If you have a video and audio source (i.e. digibox, cd/dvd player etc.) plug that into the first SCART socket. Turn off the test bars and make sure you have a stable picture and sound. You may have to tweak the tuning of the RF modulator slightly to achieve this. Once you have tuned the first modulator, put the TV on say channel 33 or 34 and then tune the second in the same way. Carry on until you have all the modulators tuned in. Make sure you can switch the TV between analogue channels with no interference. If there is, you may have to spread the tuning to avoid it. Equally you should check there are no interference effects on the digital channels. In this case if one modulator is responsible (check by switching each off in turn) it may be a case of retuning that one but make sure it doesn't affect any of the channels already set up. In practice with only two modulators there will probably be no problem, with more it may be become a matter of trial and error. You can also use the taboo channel calculator to select usable channel numbers. Some time between 1961 and 1964, my parents bought me a "Transtronic" electronic projects kit. It came in a cardboard box like a jigsaw puzzle would. It comprised a hardboard "peg board" with a matrix of holes, a selection of components with tiny connector clips (for wires) and several sheets of paper, which had the wiring layout printed on for each project. It was the best present EVER and kept me occupied for years afterwards. It contained a number of electronic components. Each was mounted on a plastic moulding, which had nickel-plated spring-clips to accept solid wire connections, and pegs to push into a matrix of holes on a hardboard base. It included paper wiring diagrams that fitted over the pegboard. I had many enjoyable years (not just hours) playing with this kit and adding parts to it in order to amplify the radio sound for a loudspeaker and make other circuits, too. It led to a university degree in electronics and a career in telephone design, which led to other things. I wonder if any of you remembers this "Transtronic" kit? Please contact me if you had one. Small resistors for Hobby Electronics, repairs etc. - a selection from this month's emails If you are a new subscriber I'm afraid that you might find some of my replies a little blunt to the point of being rude. That's just the way I am after answering customers' questions for the last fifteen years. Please don't take offence. Sometimes I'm a little tired, ratty or impatient and it shows! Generally, if you ask for a free reply, you'll get what you pay for. If you DO have a question, PLEASE read the web site information and eBooks first. I get the same questions day after day because people are in too much of a hurry to look. If you want me to give you links to the relevant pages, I'm happy to do that if you provide enough information. (I'm always REALLY busy after a "blog" is published, as everyone thinks of something they meant to ask/tell me earlier! If you just fancy a natter, please wait a few days or email me instead.) Note: I will not return your call if I'm out. Note: my replies, below, are mostly from my offer of "a free 2 minute reply". Consequently, they are sometimes brief to the point where I haven't even answered the right question because the person asking it hasn't made it clear. You wouldn't believe how often people send me an email without a single question mark and expect me to figure out precisely what they are trying to ask. On the other hand, if the questioner has written lucidly and included all possible information, AND if the question interests me, I may spend up to an hour on research to answer his question. Here's a tip: I respond better to "I have searched your Technical section but I can't find the page that tells me how to ....." than to "You gotta tel me pls wot 2 by or my wifel kill me i lives in the smoke an we need freeview innit." Questions... This month I think the "No response" winkers definitely won. It's not so much the rudeness that bothers me but the possibility that I spent a lot of time researching/typing and my email never reached the recipient. I really don't care whether they liked my reply, or found it helpful. I just want to know that it arrived. Sigh. (For those who don't know, my reply always contains a link to click. You click the link, your browser opens, you close the browser. Simple! I receive an email saying that the message arrived.) Dear SatCure, I am having problems with the phone connection to my Sky+HD Digibox... Stop right there! Disconnect the modem lead from the Ethernet socket on your Sky+HD Digibox and plug it into the telephone (modem) socket on the Digibox instead. This is a really common mistake affecting dozens of people each day. I am about to re-wire my house due to the digital switch over in London. I have the following equipment and need technical advice on what equipment is best for me: 1. Sky+ HD Pace - 2 LNB connectors - Sky dish with 2 LNB outputs. 2. Technomate TM5000 digital Sat - 1M dish and 2 LNB outputs. 3. Main Aerial in Loft. 4. VCR and DVD player. I have 2 Digital TV's and 2 Analogue TV's in the house in different rooms. I am currently only using 2 way signal splitter and I am unable to distribute to the whole house and the signal upstairs is very poor. All the cables from the satellites go through the loft and then out and down the house to each room. I think I need to replace the 2 way splitter with a distribution amplifier system. I see that you sell a number of different ones including loft boxes. Which one would you recommend and how should I link all my equipment together with the distribution system, Could you please recommend the correct diagram to use? Ali T. Unfortunately, it's a personal choice question and you haven't defined what you mean by "best", or what you want to achieve. It would also be well beyond the scope of our "free 2 minute reply". I suggest you think about exactly what you want to achieve. In other words, what you want to be able to record and where and what you want to be able to view in each room. Your proposal may turn out to be too costly or impractical so you might need to revise it - but "think big" to begin with. Bear in mind that the eventual solution depends very much on house and room layout - indeed, you might consider duplicating some of the wiring to accommodate possible room layout changes in the future. (Every time I wire up a room, my wife decides to change the position of the TV only 6 months later!) Once you've made your list, put your question in a suitable forum and get other users to comment. By sifting through the comments you should end up with some practical ideas. If you need technical advice on anything we sell, please ask me specific questions and I'll either answer or direct you to the answer on our web site. In the meantime, you might consider reading one or more of our eBooks to get some idea of what is possible. In your will an amplifier improve my signal you stated "The amplifier must always be near the input end of a long cable. If you put it at the output end, you are simply boosting the signal and the noise the cable has picked up, so you are hardly any better off!" Which end the amplifier should be installed, the LNB end or the receiver? At or near the input end. (Guys, is this really so difficult to understand?) The end into which you are feeding the signal from the LNB. However, if the LNB signal is very strong, it might work better if it is placed up to 40 metres away from the LNB. You will have to try it before installing the cable permanently. (A larger dish is usually a better answer.) I've got a masthead power supply Vision V23-560 PSU in the living room and it appears to have a bad connection ( I don't think its the leads which were bought pre-made ). Can I just replace it with the V23-100 which is a different voltage and my existing Masthead amplifier will still work? I don't know what the Masthead unit is. Regards, Ian B I would think so. See the note under the picture, here: http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page11c.htm#buysep I bought an Omni link plus kit from you approx 10 months ago. I did distribute my V+ signal from the V+ RF out using WF100 coax around the house via an SLX Amp, all bought from you. The Omni link plus is inline and has been working brilliantly at relaying the IR signals from remote SLX link eyes back to the V+. I've now bought a new TV and have the V+ box outputting via its HDMI to the new TV. This disables the RF out on the V+, so instead I am using the V+ VCR SCART output which still outputs while the V+ HDMI is being used. I run this scart into a Mercury SCART to RF modulator (this is the one item I did not buy from you (I didnt know you sold them!)) and then pass the coax/ariel connection from the modulator into the omnilink. This works in so far as the signal from the RF modulator passes through the omnilink, and is succesfully distributed to my remote TV's - they all get a good V+ picture, however, the red LED goes out on the omnilink & it fails to pass any IR signals from the remote SLX link - I cant use a remote control from a remote room any more. If I disconnect the V+ HDMI & reconnect the Omni-link back to the RF out from the V+ box, the red LED on the omnilink comes on & the remote IR functionality works again. So my question is : Should the OmniLink-Plus system still work if the source is coming via an RF Modulator which is being converted from SCART ? I cant see why it wouldnt ? Any help would be greatfully received, as the missus is not happy that she cant change the V+ channel whilst lying in bed any more! Thanks Steve Hi, Steve. I can't explain why you are seeing this result but I have one suggestion: Try decoupling the cable between modulator and Omnilink. If that doesn't fix it, then I can only suggest that you've omitted some vital information from your description, which has "thrown me off the scent". later... One thing that Ive realised I didnt mention & thats that I didn't previously use an AC adapter with the onmilink. That's the missing info. :-) The LED came on when I connected the coax - I assume it received it's power from the RF out on the V+ box. Now I've got the RF Modulator inline, I am wondering if the modulator is inhibiting the power feed to the magic eyes (thus no red LED. Perhaps it is filtering out the power feed because it thinks it's interference? So I could try using the AC adapter with the omnilink, as it sounds like maybe the issue is lack of power to the omnilink set up? However, I dont know where the AC adapter is as I've never needed it before! So : 1) Do you think this could be the problem? Yes, it won't work without power and it certainly won't get any from the modulator. 2) If so, do you sell replacement AC adapters for the omnilink? We don't stock them but ask Sales if they can obtain one or an equivalent. Open a new ticket using your existing order number I have installed the replacement capacitors supplied by you. The capacitors were showing the fault you have described, but replacing them has not resolved my problem. The unit will not power up. The cooling fan now attempts to start then stops (I think the fan did not attempt to spin up before a changed the Capacitors). I still hear a ticking sound from the Power supply. Do you supply replacement power supplies for the THOMSON DTI6300 or repair old? If so can a have a cost for this. Regards David G. Hi, David. It's possible that other capacitors have failed but, unless there are visible signs, or you have an ESR meter, the only recourse would be to replace all of them. You probably don't want to do that, although we can probably supply the parts if you do. See http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/low_ESR_capacitors.htm Otherwise, we don't handle PSUs for this model but Michael does all our repairs so I recommend you contact him. He will be able to fix your PSU but you must ask whether he wants only the PSU or the complete receiver. See http://www.digifixltd.co.uk Unfortunately, I am frequently experiencing sound drop-outs and errors from the Virgin Media box that HDMI is not available. I'm looking for a simpler method and wondering if there is a way to route the coaxial input (from the street) into a CAT6 converter, so I can locate the Virgin Media box next to the TV itself. This might eliminate the problems with the HDMI conversion. Do you have the necessary cables? thank you. David W. Hi, David. If you are referring to the ordinary coaxial cable, see http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page8.htm#WF100cutSingle In your experience do you think installing INVACOM C120 FEEDHORN on Gilbertini 1.2m will improve the signal for the weak transponders on Nilesat 7.0W? Thank you and best regards, Ashraf Compared with what? Anyway, no, not unless your existing LNB is faulty or incorrectly positioned for focal distance. Much as I'd love to take your money, I have to be honest and say that you'd be disappointed. Hi Martin, Thanks a lot for your quick reply, compared to Inverto black ULTRA single installed, have read about people installed Andrews feedhorn and C120 Flange LNB on a Gilbertini dish and the signal improved. This is why I had to ask the expert. thank you and best regards, Ashraf Well, if that placed the LNB at the exact focal point it would certainly help. But I think the neck of the Ultra is long enough for you to adjust it anyway. Martin Could you supply a spare mains power cable for thomson skyplus digibox as mine has been damaged ? rw t. Probably. Is it this one? http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page5.htm#fig8 (It must have been; he placed an order. Thanks, RWT.) I'm trying to place an order for 3 X 6 metre ultrathin cables with F connectors plugged into either side. The shopping cart seems to add the cable lengths as a total, i.e 18 metres of cables. Will the order be processed as 3 cables (divided evenly) if I ordered 18 metres + 6 x F connectors + 3 cable builds? Regards, Cliff Yes if you add a note in the Notes window of the shopping cart stating exactly what you want. (No response, yet, and no order.) I have just ordered your book Installing Sky & Freesat and received your keep me email with order no xxxx but in the email it said There are no product-specific web page links for this order. If you need information, please check the technical section of our web site. there is no link to download the book. Incidentally I downloaded your free books with no problem. Thanks J Joel Hi, J. We received a payment xxxx which stated it was for an order number SAT003. There is no such SatCure order number. It doesn't match our standard format. You should request a refund from SatCure Sales if they took a payment from your card. They do not handle eBook orders. All eBooks can be ordered from our sister site here: http://www.The-Cool-Book-Shop.co.uk (No response.) Normally that's called "circular" when the width matches the height. Can you tell me what LNB i need to purchase?. Kind Regards Frank P. Yes, you'll need a "universal" quad-output LNB to suit your dish. Most likely 40mm neck or, much less likely, C120 flange type. Dear Martin i am sorry but i do have an oval dish i sent you the wrong dimensions it is 1.3 high x 1.2 wide sorry for any inconvenient on my part regards frank Powell Frank P. Hi, Frank. That's still "circular" (as seen by the LNB, which is what matters). An "oval" dish is always wider than its height. I have 2 satellite wires coming into my living room which screw into the back of my sky box. Need to extend the 2 wires by approx 9 meters and therefore need cable extensions. Am getting a little confused by the term push fit/ screw fit connectors. Do I need 2 lengths of 9m cable with F Conns on both ends and 2 male to male SCREW type connectors or will the push fit ones work? Please can you advise or provide a link to to products needed on your website. Many thanks in advance, Regards Mark Hi, Mark. You haven't stated what your existing cable type is or whether you prefer single or twin, thin or thick cable. You can read all about the various types here: Various extension cables are on this page: Be sure to order a threaded adapter to join each cable. You haven't stated whether you'll be disconnecting frequently. If you will, then the additional push-fit adapters would help. Otherwise ignore them. More helpful pictures here: Is so, how much will that cost & how can I order it (I haven't been able to find it as an option on the website)? Unfortunately, I just received a reply from our suppliers to say that they don't have any. If not, can you deliver a 1x125m reel of shotgun webro wf100, white (preferably) to a surrey address for tomorrow or Saturday morning (28th Jan 2012)? How should I order to guarantee the delivery date? We can probably get twin white WF100 but you are cutting it fine. Can't guarantee next day delivery but you have a reasonable chance if you place your order on-line before 3pm. http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/cable_reels.htm#WF100twin I am looking for a solution that will allow me to extend my Sky service to a second Sky box (multiroom) but without having a cable run through the house. I have a tenancy in a new build which is finished to a very high standard and the landlord will not tolerate holes in walls or cable clips! The service is provided to the primary box via a UHF splitter, the cabling is all hidden and terminates in wall sockets but only in some rooms, the bedrooms have been ommitted. Would you be able to recommend / supply a suitable wireless extender or does such a device not exist? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Matt B It doesn't exist. Multiroom requires a second receiver (with card) connected by cable to the LNB on the dish. Even if it were practically possible, transmitting the LNB signals would be illegal and would cause interference with neighbouring Freeview TVs. You could watch the selected channel from a single Digibox by using a videosender (if the signal will pass through your wall/ceiling). (No response) Hi, I fitted RELKIT45 to my HUMAX 9300 about 10 days ago and it worked fine until today when it locked up and wouldnt responto R/C or Front Controls. After switch off/ switch on after 10 mins it works for 2 or 3 minutes then locks up again. I have found that the cooling Fan starts up at switch-on buty goes off after about 30 seconds and lock up follows soon afterwards. When PVR first purchased fan was noisy but quitened down after software update (two years ago). Is a mod. required to the PSU board or is thia a further software problem do you know? Or should I redo the PSU repair. Like you, I occasionally get roped in to "just take a look at this in case it's something simple". However, my eyesight isn't really up to it any more. Our warranty is covered by Michael. I recommend you contact him direct: http://www.digifixltd.co.uk Service manuals seem to be a thing of the past. The last one I managed to obtain was for the Amstrad DRX100. On a correctly working Sky+ box (the model I mentioned is the one I have), what should the resistance across the modem wires be? Mine is around 4 megohms and I am wondering if that may be too low, as a "line not good" condition appears when my ISP test the line with it present. Phil R. Hi, Phil. I don't have a specification for any Sky Digiboxes because the manufacturers refused to provide any. However, you may get information direct from Pace. Modem failure is quite common and it's always caused by lightning-induced surges on the phone lines. A phone line surge suppressor is a wise precaution. (No response) Hi there, i took this course a couple of years ago, but didnt get all the lessons, i cant remember my username or password either, i tried making a new account but it just says email already in use, im just wondering am i able to re do any lessons that i missed, or do i have to re do the course again, and if thats so how can i get around by logging in if im already a member, thank you? I have checked the database and it indicates that all 20 lessons were emailed to you. There is no record of contact to say that you missed any lessons. I do not have access to the special password that Paypal gave you. The system is fully automated but it is possible for YOU to log in to your "Manage" page and resend the lesson emails provided that you have the username and password. How many of the lessons did you save onto your computer? (No response) Please can you give me the width and length dimensions for the Pro-Vision V10-030 and the V10-040 aerials? I want to install one inside a TV unit and need the dimensions to see If I can hide it in a void at the top of the unit. I currently have a basic indoor antenna that just about does the job but I get dropouts when people move past the TV. I'm hoping that if they fit one of these will do the job. Thanks, Wayne B. Hi, Wayne. The aerials are about 31 cm wide at their widest part. The V10-040 is about 1.3m long and the V10-030 is about 1m long, give or take 1cm. In general, aerials should be mounted as far from the TV set as possible because TVs radiate interference. Obviously the last place you want a receiving antenna is next to a transmitter of interference! For this reason, the cable from the aerial to the TV should be double-screened. Keep humans away from aerials because the human body is a bag of water and will block or bounce UHF signals. Can you please tell me the stand-off? The warehouse manager tells me it's approx. 22" stand off from wall to the edge of the tube nearest the wall. I have added this information to the web site. Checked the internal and external fuses OK, but as per the forums etc, the two caps were all swollen and leaking. Consequently, ordered the relkit33M, and can find no other visible damage. As I don't have test gear or schematics at home, (on leave)had hoped that might be the problem, but obviously not. Do you have any quick suggestions?, or would it be easier to just send it to you ?. Regards Alan H. Hi, Alan. You have to fit the capacitors in the kit to the PSU. If that didn't cure the problem, you may have left it too late and other damage has been caused. In that case I recommend you send your Digibox to Michael for assessment and possible repair (if you accept his estimate). http://www.digifixltd.co.uk (No response) Hi, I've got a sky link magic eye and want to run it up to my > bedroom from the living room. Do i need two of the wall plates you sell? Paul J. Sorry, I don't recall my original reply and you didn't include it. We recommend using fully screened wall plates to keep signal in and interference out. I can't say whether it will solve your specific problem. In fact nothing in this message tells me what your problem is. (No response) robert b. I think it's the glass doors. However, you omitted a lot of information so I'm left guessing. We recently moved into a new house and experienced difficulties with both the digital & terrestrial TV signal. We had an old aerial which could not receive ITV1 & 2 and had a breaking-up signal of the BBC. For your information: - Crystal Palace is the transmitter for our area - our aerial fixed to the chimney and the aerial head is about 4 m off the ground. A cable leads from there directly to the TV through the hole in the window frame. To solve these problems, we installed a new high gain aerial to improve our digital TV quality from ScrewFix (Labgear TV Aerial High-Gain Digital WITHOUT masthead amplifier). Unfortunately, we continue to experience the following problems only with the BBC channels (all other channels are working fine): - on its own the TV switches from one BBC channel to another - the TV TEXT screen comes up on it own - the 'information screen' with brief information about a particular program pop up on its own. Can you advise how we can fix these issues ? We still have an old coaxial cable running directly from the aerial to the TV. Would a masthead amplifier or a normal indoor aerial amplifier fix these issues ? Which model ? Or, are these now symptoms of a too strong digital signal and we require an attenuator ? We look forward to your advice and which equipment we should purchase. Yours sincerely, Huib Maat Hi, I wonder if this is the aerial you bought? <http://www.screwfix.com/p/labgear-tv-aerial-high-gain-digital/60215> If so, it is a "wideband" type and totally unsuitable for Crystal Palace reception, which needs a "Group A" aerial or a "log-periodic". The reasons are explained at the bottom of this page: Also, you state "We still have an old coaxial cable running directly from the aerial to the TV." This should have been the first item to replace. Use proper double-screened WF100 cable. However, none of this explains the problems you describe. Aerial and cable problems can't cause a TV set to switch channel or bring up a text screen. That's more likely to be a faulty TV set or interference caused by an "energy saver" light or a bad connection is a mains power socket or something electrical. Switch off EVERYTHING electrical to narrow down the possibilities. But the very first thing to do is try a different TV set. (No response) I bought a 20 metre length of WF100 shotgun cable from you a couple of months ago and fitted it in my new bungalow in order to get the best and avoid sky wiring. I routed it through the loft and down a cavity with some pulling but nothing excessive, I think. Sky came and they can't get a signal. They've redone he connections and get no signal on either cable. The dish is OK as I get freesat from it on other cables. I've checked the cable and I see no kinks. There are no connections part way down it and no one has bashed a nail through it or a screw. I can see all the cable and it looks ok. Any suggestions? Could the cable be faulty? Thanks Guy H. Hi, Guy. Yes, it's quite possible for cable to have an internal fault, although extremely rare. I can think of only one reported instance in 17 years of trading. A fault in two sections of a twin cable would be even more rare but not impossible. Pulling on the inner core can cause it to cut through the dielectric if the cable goes around a curve. Measure from inner core to outer braid with a continuity checker. There should be no continuity. If that's OK, measure between both ends of the inner core. It should measure short circuit. Please make these measurements and let me know the results. Continuity can be measured with a multimeter or with a simple arrangement using a battery with bulb or buzzer. When you contact us again, please be sure to quote your order number. (No response) Yes, it's 87 x 100cm approx. as stated on the order page. I'll correct it. http://www.satcure.com/accs/seaside_dish.htm (No response) Re LNB for FreeSat - yes, LNB with 2 or more outputs. You're right of course about the French Sat side of things. My apologies for not adding more detail about that. We have a subscription to French TV via our Orange telephone/internet package. The guide for the Orange TV set up says that if our satellite dish is pointing at Hot Bird 13 degrees East or Astra (it does not say which one), then we are OK for service. We have the Orange box (2 poss model numbers on the back: Samsung TV SHD 85 - it also says SMT-H6106) and decoder card for this box. OK but I know nothing about this. I handle Sky and Freesat. Happy to have a go at bodging the bracket if the one you have is close to 3 x 2cm. Hi, I've got a sky link magic eye and want to run it up to my bedroom from the living room. I've got a cable coming out of rf2 and with a short cabe i have got the light on the sky link and can operate it. Theres a wall plug with a cable running up to the artic with a join in it then goin down into the bedroom into another wall plug. I dont think the wall plugs are the right ones i need by the description in your manual and i am not sure if that joint is causing a problem. The house is a year old and the cables and sockets were fitted by the builders. If you can give any advice and what parts i need it will be greatly appriciated? paul j. Hi, Paul. See http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page7.htm#cables Make sure that all your cable is double-screened type, otherwise you may suffer unreliable operation of the magic eye or interference. Also make sure any wall plate connections are screened and "DC pass" type. See http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/wallplates.htm E. C. All Freeview TVs receive the Freeview TV and radio programmes broadcast by your local transmitter. So you should check what broadcasts are receivable at your location. Also check this page to see if your desired radio programmes are included. http://www.freeview.co.uk/Channels (No response) I have experienced a deterioration in my FreeSat signal in the past view months i.e. can no longer receive most radio channels at all while the reception of some tv channels has become poor - particularly on wet days. My guess is the waterproofing at the LNB is faulty. WF100 cable has been used with WF1PLUG connectors. Is this cable fairly resistant to capillary action or should I remove a section of the exterior cable or should I just junk the whole run and start again? The dish is situated on a wall exposed to coastal salt winds(& rain!). Thanks for your help, david l. Hi, David. The copper braid will suck up water like a candle wick. Check the braid to see if it has gone green or black with corrosion. If it has, strip it back until you reach bright copper. If the plug was assembled with silicone grease, as we recommend, then the cable may be OK. LNBs are hermetically sealed so, unless the plastic cap has cracked, there should be no water inside. Your symptoms could also be cause by leaves in the signal path. I have a Pace 2200 Sky digibox which has recently stopped its RF2 output. I have reset the box by turning it off at the plug overnight, and turned off and then on the RF2 output via the installers menu. Are you aware of a common fault on this box regarding RF2 Out and, if so, is there a simple repair option? Thank You for your time. Stephen Hi, Stephen. The Pace BSKYB2200 is a truly ancient receiver, which I would personally consign to the recycling bin. Newer models respond much quicker to the remote. Problems with RF output power are often (in my experience) caused by water running down a damaged TV aerial cable, in which case that needs to be investigated and fixed. If this is the case, I wouldn't bother even to look inside the Digibox. Even if it can be repaired now, internal corrosion can cause more problems in the future. The other common fault is that the central pin of the socket has broken loose from its solder connection on the PCB. That can be fixed, although it's fiddly. I'm looking for a dish arm - that can move up and side ways SMR-1224EL that uses the actuator to move up and down with h-h motor 36v left to right. two questions - will you ship to my address in United States area? Generally, no, it's too expensive to ship large or heavy items outside the UK. There's also the "hassle" factor of customs forms and customers potentially complaining about import duties and tax. For the tiny profit we'd get, it's not worth it. second - do you carry the exact model Jaeger Superjack SMR-1224EL with the ability to add the arm actuator to it? As far as I know, we can no longer obtain any Jaeger products. Our suppliers no longer import them. However, they seem to have a web site here:- http://www.superjack-solar.com This UK company seems to have Jaeger stuff: http://www.satellitesuperstore.com/motors.htm If they don't reply to your emails, don't give up. I've had problems getting through to them myself. Something wrong with their email system, I think. They won't deliberately ignore you. (No response) Hi Do you sell a very short cable to link the TV socket to the return socket or is there a better way to do this? My reason for asking is that my son have just bought a new flat with a plate similar to this & has been told that this is the way to get the TV signal into the 2 bedrooms thanks Matt C. Hi, Matt, The shortest we make is 25cm. See http://satcure.co.uk/accs/page8.htm#rfleads You'll need the "male -> female adapter" as well. (No response) What tests can I do to check if a Band C Low Noise Block is working? Test it with a known good receiver and make sure the dish is aligned and the connecting cable is OK. If it is working, you should get a signal. There is no simple way to prove that it is NOT working. (No response) Receiver is a Denon RCD-M38DAB. The DAB socket on the back is a female F-type. To be connected to a female belling-lee socket. Length of cable - short, but not less than 20cm. Summary - information required to order all the bits to make a co-ax cable with a male F-type one end, a male belling-lee the other. I have heat-shrink tubing and a good selection of tools. Thanks for any help. Peter M. Hi, Peter. You'll find 'F' plugs, TV plugs and adapters on this page: Coaxial cable on this page: Our web site Technical section is full of information including plugs and cable. PS The message "920xxx Order or Ticket number not recognised" was given when I first tried to send this e-mail. That looks like an order number from our sister site "The Cool Book Shop". You can't use it for SatCure but thank you for ordering an eBook. I have Sky TV in lounge downstairs and currently use a skylink magic eye in bedroom 1 to view sky from the same box. I have recently run a coaxial cable from bedroom 1 to bedroom 2 to be able to watch terrestrial TV / and sky in bedroom 2 as there was no TV aerial socket. This all works fine. My problem is that I want to use a second magic eye in bedroom 2 in order to change the channel in there also. In bedroom 1, I have the sky TV aerial going into a Global F120 2 way sky distribution amplifier and then want to connect the "sky link magic" into one of the outputs and the coaxial cable into the other output and attach the "Ross magic eye to the end in the second bedroom. Hi, Paul. Unfortunately, I don't understand "sky TV aerial" as there's no such thing. Do you mean "terrestrial TV aerial"? This should be connected to the aerial input on the main Sky Digibox whose RF2 output should be connected to the Global amplified splitter. It's all explained with diagrams and pictures here: My question is: what adaptors do I need to connect the output connector of the F120 to the "Sky link magic eye" and which one to connect the output of the F120 to a coaxial cable? That's easy. the "F" stands for "F" plug. All the F120 outputs and input are "F" connectors. Hello, I'm not really sure what I need so was hoping you could advise. Essentially I want the best of bread for all items. Sorry, I don't understand the reference to "bread". Are you using predictive text that altered what you actually typed? I think i need: See http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/cable.htm I need the correct connections on each end of the cable. See http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/plugs.htm I need a distribution unit that will work with magic eyes with a minimum of 6 outputs. See http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/split.htm I need two magic eyes. See http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page3.htm#skylink Just a short mail to confirm that the LNB bracket for my MK4 Sky dish arrived and is the correct part. Many thanks for the excellent service. Nice to know that it still exists out there. Thanks for the feedback, Alan. I'll put the bracket for sale on our web site in case anyone else needs one. Im thinking about buying the thomson sky hd psu repair kit to replace the blown capacitors on the board. Ive got the tools to do it but have only done a little soldering before but want to do this. Which of the capacitors need replacing so I can familiarise myself with the one that need changing. I believe the instructions are for those that have purchased a product only? Lee B. Hi, Lee. ALL the electrolytic capacitors in the PSU should be replaced. About 14 if I recall correctly. See http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/thom_psu.htm A link to instructions is supplied when you place an order. (No response) i would like to buy channel master lnb bracket. thanks Abdul A. See http://www.satcure.co.uk/orders.htm#paymethod (Placed an order. Thanks, Abdul.) Came across your site and saw some of the wiring/led flashing kits. I'm looking for a clock movement where the second hand flashes on every second it rotates. Is this possible to do? Thanks Ryan B. Anything is possible. If I understand correctly, you need a clock movement with a second hand (pointer) and central rotating spindle made out of perspex. This will transmit light from a flashing LED set behind the spindle. Unfortunately, I can't supply such a device but it's the sort of thing that could be made, with a little ingenuity. (No response) Haha. A "mall" is a shopping precinct. It has "malfunctioned". ;-) Could you recommend a repairer, and a rough idea of the costs, I can send it or someone could come and collect it, or repair it here? Mrs ESL M. Yes, Michael should be able to fix it: http://www.digifixltd.co.uk (No response) I want to move my Virgin Media Superhub from its current location (in a bedroom) to the hall a few metres away. The existing cable that connects the hub to the wall socket isn't long enough, so I'd like to buy an extension from you. Ideally, I would like to use the same equipment as is already installed so I can be sure that there will be no compatibility issues. I'm not sure if this is its type (I have tried to find out), but the existing cable has written on it "CTFC-T10 11138" and is single. At the end that connects to the hub, the plug is compression fitted and has written on it "PPC EX6 11". The other end of the cable is inaccessible. It is roughly 5m long and was fitted 3 months ago. I have no colour preference and I want to spend a maximum of £75. The problem is I don't know exactly which cable and adaptor/plug to use, and I don't have/it's not economical to buy the tool for compression fitting. I would really appreciate it if you could help me find a solution to these two problems. As a question: what do I need to get this job done given my budget? This is special cable available only to Virgin Media and to Virgin technicians who steal it and sell it on eBay. However, our WF100 cable appears to be a good match and several customers have told us that it works fine. We can fit compression plugs, or twist-on 'F' plugs, or supply separate twist-on 'F' plugs that you can easily fit by yourself (instructions on our site) if you want to save money. Unfortunately, I don't think we can justify charging you £75 unless you want a couple of reels! ;-) See http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page8.htm#WF100cutSingle Please refer to our web site Technical section for technical information. Hi Martin, Thanks for such a quick response! It's greatly appreciated. Sorry I couldn't reply within office hours. If you could supply me with 5m of WF100 with compression plugs fitted that would be great. Will I need an adaptor or can you fit an F plug on just one end? Either way I'm happy to pay the cost, and thanks for being honest about the price; sometimes people can take advantage when you tell them your budget! Unfortunately I can't find a link to add the exact product I need to my basket so I can buy online, If you could tell me exactly where to click or just send me a link to buy I'll order right away. Kind regards and many thanks, Thomas F. Hi, Thomas. You need a cable with plugs on both ends, plus a threaded adapter for the join. Here is a picture of the threaded coupler for joining cables: The link I gave in my previous reply was correct. Here it is again. http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page8.htm#WF100cutSingle Scroll down a little to see the drop-down list of cables with compression plugs fitted. One length option is 5m + Choice of colour. Be sure to include a threaded adapter for each join that you want to make. If you want extension leads with screw-on plugs, scroll down just a little further. It's probably going to be just over a tenner with postage and VAT. (Tip: if you have a question, it's best to ask it before you order. That way you won't order the wrong items and you might save postage by including everything in one order.) Message : : This is to extend the existing cable to the Sky HD box which has been moved into a cupboard. Is there anything else i need? Equipment made by: Thomson Dear Martin, I am trying to extend our Sky+ cables in our bedroom. We have BSKYB Twin 63 008A cable. Can you tell me the correct cable to extend this and the connectors needed for best quality? I'd like to purchase them from you today if possible. Many thanks Kindest Regards Declan. I suspect it's CT63 equivalent. Our replacement would be twin "shotgun" WF65. We recommend a maximum overall length of 20 metres to minimise signal loss (but depends on your location and dish size of course). (Placed an order. Thanks, Declan.) thanks, Ben Probably Chinese. Certainly not genuine CT100. Probably be OK. Take it apart and look at the construction. CT100 was air-spaced. The "F" usually means "foam" dielectric (looks solid but squishy). The important thing is the copper screen. It should have copper braid on copper foil. (No response) Kind regards Matthew Hi, Matthew. Provided that the board itself is intact and the copper tracks underneath are not badly damaged then Michael should be able to repair it for you. See http://www.digifixltd.co.uk I accidentally cut through my twin sky cables(not shotgun)6-7mm and bought a 2 joint kits and tape/grease to repair them. However, I cant judge the length of the coax core so they meet again in new connector supplied. What am I doing wrong? Is there an idiots guide please. Peter. PETER MERIFIELD Unfortunately, I don't understand what you mean by "so they meet again" but, since you have not confirmed that you already read it, I'm obliged to direct you to your PRODUCT INFORMATION links in your order confirmation "Keep-me" email. I'll send you another copy, just in case you failed to keep it. hello, I can confirm I have read the link -thank you, but its not specific to the joint kits. could you please supply detailed installation/fitting instructions for the satellite cable 'joint kits' I bought. Hi, everything you need is on this page: It seems that the co axial central copper core doesnt 'mate' once inside the threaded 'f' barel coupler. Sorry, I don't understand what you mean. If you fit the 'F' plugs, as described on the page, and screw them onto the threaded coupler, the joint will be as good as it gets. Be sure to use silicone grease and weatherproof it if outdoors. thanks in advance, Alan L. Hi, Alan. Please read the bottom of this page: If this helps, please let me know what you did to fit it (photo would be nice.) Hi, I have tried to fit a Quad LNB with a MK4 adaptor on the top of the arm from my Sky Channel Master Dish. It does fit, however I notice that the front face of the LNB is a lot further away from the dish than the original LNB. Is this a problem? thanks again in advance, Alan L. Yes, please read the bottom paragraph of the page that relates to focal position. Like an idiot I ordered an Inverto twin lnb which has a 40mm neck without checking the mounting. 1.Is the lnb a waste of time due to the oval dish shape? 2.If not do you supply an adaptor that will fit the arm? Thanks, Dave T, Hi, Dave. You are welcome to return the LNB if unsuitable. Sky don't supply an 80cm dish so I don't know what you have and I can't comment on adapters without knowing dimensions and angles. If it's a Sky minidish (width much greater than height) then you'll get better performance from a Sky LNB. http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page1.htm Regards Rod T. Hi, Rod. Yes you can. I'm the only person currently using the dish in the block. The dish was checked this week for alignment and the engineer said the strength was very high. I have checked the sky LNB settings for my box too. Is the signal strength too high for the box? I have also tried swapping the LNB feeds and it shows the same results. Do I need to just use the attenuators to bring the signal strength down? Or are there other possible causes? Thanks Graham Graham N. Hi, Graham. If the dish diameter is 1 metre or more then the signal will almost certainly be too strong. I recommend you test your Digibox at a friend's house to see if it's OK. If it is, then get your landlord or building manager to correct the problem. Obviously it would do no harm to try an attenuator but I can't tell you what value to use and why should you have to pay to correct a system fault anyway? (No response and, yes, I did send it again after correcting his typo in his email address!) Unfortunately, I don't understand what you mean by "Digital TV feed". You could be referring to a cable that carries Freeview terrestrial signals, satellite LNB signals, Digibox RF output signals or all three or even HDMI. It's simply not possible to guess. Also, your questions would far exceed my offer of "a free 2 minute reply". If you upload a comprehensively labelled wiring diagram and email me a couple of clearly written questions, I'll try to give yes/no answers. I want to install an home digital satellite system for the following satellites: Astra 19.2 Hotbird 13 Astra 28.2 I intend to receive on a computer using a dual-tuner card with CI such as TBS6992. At some point in the future I might want to feed another TV or two, so I'm assuming Quad LNBs. My question is what would you recommend for dish and LNB's? It is 4 stories from my rooftop down to the computer in the basement. I will be employing an installer to do the work. My roof is red-brown clay tiles. Good signal is the first priority, appearance a secondary consideration, and cost a third. My community allows dishes up to about 0.8m2. Thanks for your help. Norman H. Get the largest dish you can. It won't receive all Astra-2 multiplexes. Choice of LNB doesn't matter with a dish less than 1.8m in diameter so just get the cheapest that fits your dish. Be sure to press the TV button to control the TV and the SKY button to control the Digibox. See http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/satindex.htm Thank you Hal P. Happy to but your message is too vague. Which advice and, specifically, where? (No response) I have been using a digisender DG20tx for about a year with sky+ and have had no problems. I recently updated to a sky HD box and while the signal is still received on the tv in the other room the magic eye no longer works (using the HD remote or original sky+ remote) Your advice would be appreciated? Elaine B. Hi, Elaine. A couple of people have reported problems with various remote sender systems not working with The Amstrad Sky DRX890. (Please confirm that this IS your model number on the label). Try changing your remote control handset to Sky+ operation. See http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/digicode1.htm#skyhd If that doesn't help, try using a Sky+ remote instead of the Sky+HD remote. Please reply and let us know how you get on, so that we can better advise others. Model number on label or rear panel: DG20 TX I have been using a digisender DG20tx for about a year with sky+ and have had no problems. I recently updated to a sky HD box and while the signal is still received on the tv in the other room the magic eye no longer works (using the HD remote or original sky+ remote) Your advice would be appreciated? Elaine B The "magic eye" positioning may be critical. It may need to be moved away from the Digibox, maybe aimed at a wall or ceiling. The Digibox may be seeing interference from something, either infra-red or radio. Switch off everything that might be transmitting - including the TV set. (Obviously you'll have to switch it back on to see if the remote changed channel while it was off.) Hi Martin, Success!!! I finally got it all to work properly by placing the "magic eye" on it's side (without the base) about two inches in front of the centre of the SKYHD box. Thanks to your help I also managed to get my original Sky+ remote to control the HD box - via the digisender - saving me from buying a second one to use upstairs. Thanks so much for all of your help Elaine Congratulations, Elaine. I'm pleased that your persistence paid off. I can't explain why that should have worked. Sometimes technical knowledge doesn't help whereas the empirical approach ("suck it and see") does! Hello. In summer 2002 we bought a secondary house in France. I used to be systems manager for a large state school before retiring so reckoned I could set up digital TV in France myself. So it proved. On advice from a firm in Camberley I bought a Panasonic TU-DSB50, 80cm Triax dish and Eurostar LNB. We wanted the dish to be unobtrusive so I mounted it on a short metal post sunk in the ground so the dish/LNB was just clear of the ground. Over the years the ground has risen/post has sunk so dish/LNB quite often touches the ground. After an absence of a couple of months I usually have to clear debris and re-adjust dish. Yesterday we arrived in freezing conditions to find no signal. After all the usual symptoms analysis I find we cannot get any kind of signal indication through 90 degrees horizontal and 30 degrees vertical and have to conclude the LNB has finally decided it's been abused enough and quit. The cable from the LNB to the Digibox is about 30 continuous metres and there are no breaks, kinks or chafing anywhere along the length. Is my diagnosis accurate, please? If so I would appreciate your confirmation of and advice on replacement LNB, and cost, including fast shipping to an address in France. Many thanks. Peter R. Hi, Peter. I can't make a diagnosis from the information that you've provided. First try another Digibox to see if that gets a signal. If not, use a meter next to the dish to check alignment. That should eliminate or prove that the LNB is faulty. Cable exposed to sunlight, rain and/or soil microbes can deteriorate and reduce the signal (but seldom to zero). Nevertheless, it's worth considering its replacement to ensure best performance of the system. You might like to install two or more cables for a Freesat PVR that will record programmes. If you do need a new LNB, we can supply standard "universal" LNBs with a 40mm neck for your Triax dish. We give a choice of outputs from 1 to 8. Looking to purchase a loft distribution box, can you advise on which one you would recomend and why? It's a personal choice. Please read the information provided so that you can decide which one suits you (if any). Some people don't need a Loft Box and a simple distribution amplifier suffices: Others find a multiswitch system more suitable: (No response) Are you a veteran? In the sense "did I fight in a war"? No, thank goodness, but my father did. His story is here: http://www.The-Cool-Book-shop.co.uk/reading/anecdotes.htm I need picture catalogue which shows the fitting instructions of dish antenna fitting and its setup. I dont know English much. So please send me the pictue catalogue. Thanking You Ziladar Khan I do not have. But this might help: http://www.directv.com/learn/pdf/SelfInstallGuide.pdf (No response) Maresa Hi, Maresa, Unfortunately, the signal prediction sites require a postcode or OS grid reference. See <http://www.wolfbane.com/cgi-bin/tvd.exe?DX=L&OS=SJ626918+> (No response) Boy, is your emailing system counter-intuitive! I'm sorry if this is not your field, but I haven't got any numbers or receipts etc. I ordered a couple of plugs, silicon, tape etc. for a "shotgun" cable on January 8th & I have heard nothing. I paid the extra 4% and the money went out of my paypal account straight away and this shows it was sent to your account.(paypal99@satcure.con) I haven't received an email to any of my accounts. If your system doesn't like gmail, please could you try xxxx@btinternet.com? It was only £5.59 worth of stuff, but I thought I'd get them from you as your free instructions seem so helpful. Please could you let me know if there is another human to direct this enquiry to, or please help! I do not have a "keep me" number. Regards, Duncan M. Hi, Duncan. As you have no order number, I assume that your order didn't go through. There is no order record for yyyy@gmail.com or xxxx@btinternet.com Please click http://www.satcure.co.uk Read all of that page and decide what you'd like to do. (He requested a refund.) geoff As we discussed via Skype, you will be able to view the HD programmes with a Scart lead connection but they won't be in High Definition. To be sure of High Definition, disconnect the Scart Lead and connect an HDMI lead instead. "HD" on the screen indicates an HD transmission but doesn't guarantee that what you are watching is actually in High Definition. (But unless you use an HDMI lead it definitely won't be.) You do not need a new LNB (if your existing one is working). All modern Digital satellite TV receivers use a "universal" LNB. The only difference is the fitting type (to attach it to your dish arm) and the number of outputs. A Sky+HD Digibox uses two of the available outputs. I think I will also have to invest in one of your ESR meters, been after one for a while !!. We haven't sold one for over a decade. Get one here: http://www.peakelec.co.uk/content/products.html thanks Abdul A. Sorry, I don't know but there's a photo here: http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/channelmaster_dish.htm Does it look identical? Otherwise, please contact Andrews the manufacturer: Support{at}channelmasterstore.com Hi there, I have a 65cm dish. If I add two LNBs to the dish, will I be able to receive both channels available from Hotbird and Astra 2D (Freesat) with this dish fixed at one position only? I live in Liverpool. Kind Regards. Nasr O. Yes but you won't have much "rain margin" with that size dish. An 80cm would be better. (Both channels? There are more than just two channels - hundreds!) Equipment made by: Humax Freesat Hi Martin I bought a Labgear HDSR300 receiver and satellite dish from Screwfix a couple of years ago and it has worked well, but I wanted to upgrade to the Humax Foxsat-HDR to record one channel while watching another. I've now got the Humax box and it's very good, but to get full functionality I need at least a dual LNB. Is it a straightforward job to change the LNB and retune? If so can you please recommend the most appropriate Dual LNB to suit the dish, that I can buy from you. I would also need a second lead at 20m long to go from the dish to the box. I might also need a device to assist in retuning as I suspect in removing the original LNB and replacing it I won't get it in exactly the correct position. Your assistance would be appreciated including costs for the above parts. Many Thanks Gibson Hi, Gibson. You don't say from which satellites you want the twin horns of the dual LNB to receive signals. As you will know, a dual (monobloc) LNB is DiSEqC controlled and usually designed for an 80cm dish and satellites 6 degrees apart. As for whether it will fit a dish from Screwfix, I have no way of knowing. However, we sell only one dual (monobloc) LNB so the question is academic; Cable is here: Satfinder meters: All prices shown are exclusive of carriage and VAT. You can use the shopping cart to get a price total with no obligation. (No response) Many thanks, Henry W. Hi, Henry. You can download instructions here: http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/tvlink2.htm My humax foxsat HDR is stuck on boot. Removed the power Supply circuit board (which I think where fault is) It read model PW808 but can't find replacement or repair kit. Don't know how to check all capacitor , this is the reason why I want to change the board. Many thanks for your help Franck F. No problem. You can send your receiver to Michael for repair: http://www.digifixltd.co.uk Hi Can you please tell me where I could find a replacement power supply board for my humax foxsat HDR as I think mine is faulty. Box stuck on BOOT. Can I buy it from you? Many thanks Franck F. You might get one from Humax. They have supplied direct to customers previously. However, your diagnosis may be wrong. Why not send your Humax to Michael for investigation/repair? http://www.digifixltd.co.uk (No response) I haveuploaded a wiring diagram of my proposed setup called SB-proposed (there is no current setup as it's a house I have just bought and is being renovated). Here are my requirements: Two rooms on the ground floor will have Sky+ The remaining rooms within the house (6 rooms) to have Freeview with the possibility to watch SKY+ (and change channels). As you can see I have placed the DDU on the ground floor as that is where I think it's best suited. Here are the questions I have for you: 1) On your website you have said that the DDU should be placed as close to the Aerial as possible. In my case this is a good 20meters away. Do you think I need to include a Mast head amp to compensate for the distance between the aerial and the DDU? If so will the Triax 333112 provide adequate power to the Masthead amp over the coax going to the Aerial? It depends on how strong the signal is from your aerial. Try a Freeview TV at the point where you plan to put the Loft Box. If the TV works OK, without signs of picture breakup in bad weather, your positioning will be OK. (According to "Wolfbane" signal prediction site, you have a very strong signal from Crystal Palace. You should be using a Log Periodic aerial - preferably with a Group A bandpass filter to remove unwanted interference from other transmissions but if you already have a working aerial, leave well alone. You won't need an amplifier.) 2) I'm planning on getting Sky to install the digiboxes, but I have a feeling that they will simply punch a hole through the external wall and plug the LNB directly into the digi boxes. I'd want them to route the cable to where my DDU is so that I can plug the LNB into that. How do I best approach this? Do I route the satellite cable myself and leave it hanging outside for sky to wire it up to the LNB? Yes, do that. Sky installers want an easy life and won't do anything that takes more time than usual. 3) How does the design look to you in general? Do you think it's a workable solution? It looks OK to me at first glance. Provided that you've followed Triax's own wiring diagram, it should be fine:- http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/loftbox4.htm (No response) I wish to combine 3 R/F signals from 3 modulators and use an existing feed to a loft box for distribution. I already combine 2 of these signals, but wish to add a third. I will select 3 channels as far apart as possible, I then tune into these with the TVs. Please suggest which piece of equipment you can supply for this. Many thanks Max. Hi, Max. You could try our 4-way PAS1243/001 combiner but this is not the professional way to do it. However, it's a much cheaper solution if you can get away with it! Bear in mind that you'll lose quite a few dB of signal in a passive combiner. http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page15a.htm#combiner (He ordered one. Thanks, Max. Let us know if it worked.) i am currently working on a large residential project which consists of 4 flats. i want to provide virgin tv in each flat and would like to wire up the building before they are plastered. Virgin will not come out for another month and are not very helpful. Can you please tell me which wires are needed and the connectors. many thanks Anish B. As far as I know, Virgin will normally install coaxial cables, similar to WF100, with 'F' plugs, and twisted-pair telephone cables. However, I think you should ask in the appropriate forums that deal with Virgin Media, rather than ask me (an "expert" in satellite TV and Freeview). (No response) Hi I need some information before I can complete my order form for some bits and pieces that I need, I have a mk2 or 3 mini dish that I want to fit an lnb to that will feed 2 hd satellite receivers so that 2 separate channels can be viewed at the same time (different rooms) which one do I require. Regards Ken Hi, Ken. Unfortunately, I can't quite follow your sentence and there's no question mark. Are you asking me a question? You seem to be asking me which channel you require. Or maybe you have a question about your LNB? Sky minidish LNBs are listed on this page: Be sure to choose one that has sufficient outputs for your receivers. You haven't stated the model number or the number of tuner inputs so I can't guess. Be sure to include the adapter if required. (Placed an order. Thanks, Ken!) I have always used a wireless remote control between rooms with my SKY+ hd box until recently when it stopped working, thinking the unit was faulty as it was very old i bought a new one, this also does not work. Having read on the internet SKY have sent upgrades to boxes that can cause my symptoms, are you able to confirm this and is there any way i get around this problem. the EPG software version on my box is 47.0.16.1 Operating version R003.047.25.00p I eagerly await your reply. Ian H. Sorry, I haven't heard anything about this and the Digibox make and model number you gave don't make sense. I recommend you read the label again. I bet it's an Amstrad DRX something or other. You haven't stated the make and model number of your wireless remote, either. Why not ask the company that supplied it whether they know the solution? If it were something that I sell, I'd be most interested to hear if one of my products didn't work and I'd be looking for an answer. I'd also be asking BskyB - I'm sure they would want to minimise customer complaints. (No response) I recently bought a SkyLink compatible passive splitter from you delivered to DL14 company name Sxxx lxxx direct. I have it connected to my sky hd box via a cable, it runs to a downstairs tv and a upstairs tv. Wiring all seems fine, both tv have good picture and red lights are on the sky eye. So I assumed all was ok. I have also tested both paths by directly plugging them into the rf2 outlet and both work fine on a individual basis. However when I introduce the splitter, the upstairs one works fine until a button is pressed on the down stairs remote. Then the down stairs one will work fine and the upstairs one is not responsive. If you reverse the order you try things, and turn the downstairs one on first, that works fine till the button on the upstairs one is pressed. the upstairs one works fine, and the downstairs is non responsive. So all elements work in there (sic) own right, is this the splitter? Wayne c. Hi, Wayne. I have found your order number xxx. It is essential to quote this number with all correspondence. Doing so will save my time and get you an answer sooner. You have not confirmed that you have read all the product information so please refer to your "Keep-me" message for that. Hi Martin I have read it, but guess i dont fully understand it. Am I just to unplug one of them from the TV as I have HDMI going to one for picture And only have it for remote control use. Or do I need to Decoupling coaxial cable, if so which one? Thanks in advance, and I don't mind paying for your time if needs be i appreciate time you spend dealing with emails could be spent elseware So let me know your charge and i will paypal it over if needed wayne c. Well the relevant answer to your original question was this paragraph:- Q. How do I know whether I need a "passive" splitter or an "amplified" splitter? A. You don't. In general, a "passive" splitter will probably work if the cable runs are short (10m or less) and of good quality cable. However, a "passive" splitter might work fine with longer cables. Bear in mind that a "passive" splitter reduces the signal in each cable to around 40% of the original (which can make the picture look "grainy" and COULD MAKE THE REMOTE OPERATION INTERMITTENT). If this happens then you've lost the gamble and you'll need an amplified splitter. Unfortunately, I've never tried to use a passive splitter myself so I can't advise. I guess you could experiment with decoupling cables. Bear in mind that a decoupled cable won't pass current (that's the whole point) so you can do it to a cable that is supplying power to a magic eye. If you have connected a "magic eye" to a TV set that isn't actually using the RF signal, that was pointless. Disconnect it. A TV needs no "magic eye" connection. The purpose of a "magic eye" is to send a signal back to a Digibox. You are welcome to Skype me for free if you think it will help but I'm afraid that my answer is likely to be "try it and see". (No response) Equipment made by: Amstrad Sky Hi, I have an old Raven dish and RAV-BJ21 LNB in the South of France, we are on the side of a hill with only a small area to pick up a signal because of a hill opposite and a balcony above. I need a powerful LNB to help, what would you recommend? Many thanks Nick Nick Hart Hi, Nick. I'm afraid that somebody has been winding you up. There's no such thing. (Believe me, if there was, I'd be happy to take your money.) Your dish needs a clear view of the relevant satellite, otherwise it will pick up no signal. Even leaves will block the signal. If you are getting some signal but not enough, a larger dish might help. A different LNB will not unless your existing LNB is faulty. Best Wishes, Martin Hi Martin, The signal has deteriorated, I renewed the cable which is slightly better so I would like to try a new LNB to replace the old RAV-BJ121 LNB I have now, do you have a part number for me to purchase? Kind regards Nick Hi, Nick. I can't be specific because I don't know which Raven dish you have. If it's substantially wider than it's height, you should probably use a Sky minidish LNB to match. Otherwise use a standard LNB with however many outputs you need. (He ordered a Sky LNB. Thanks, Nick! Please let us know if it works OK?) new house and found a Triax 333112 loft box in the converted loft space - unused. I have since bought a lot of components required in order to get the system up and running, and run cables. I have routed 2xWF100 cables (+cat5+phone but that's beside the point) to the main lounge, which are connected to a 304115 outlet plate. The satellite had only 2 connections into its quad LNB, which I swapped out, and ran 4xWF100 cables from it, to the loftbox SAT1-4 inputs. There is no UHF connection into the loftbox at present. All unused inputs have a 75ohm terminator on them to minimise interference as recommended by your site. I have not at present earthed the device or connected the return feed from the satellite box (no other room wired up yet to make use of it!) The current state of play is that the main lounge displays maximum strength + quality for input 1 but for input 2 only 10% strength (one bar on the sky+ box display whatever that is), and around 70% quality. At first I thought it was my cabling etc... however after trying everything I can, I cannot get the 2nd input to go up any more. Swapping the SAT1 input into loftbox with SAT2 made no difference! Input1 on the sky box remained virtually maximum and SAT2 remained very low strength and around 70% quality. So the signals to/from the LNB would appear to be ok. Swapping the down & up links resulted in the sky box showing me maximum input 2 and nothing input 1 if I remember correctly. So the input2 + return wiring appears to also be ok. Therefore I think I have proved the cabling from the LNB, and to the faceplate and into the Sky box. I really don't know what to do next and could do with some guidance here! I must have done something wrong?! Kind Regards, Sean R. You haven't mentioned repairing the PSU of your Thomson Sky Digibox DSI-6210 so I would suspect that first of all. It's a common fault which can cause all sorts of weird symptoms:- http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/thom_psu.htm If you want proof, test LNB1 and LNB2 at the wall plate, individually, with a standard Sky Digibox. You should be able to borrow one or pick one up for a tenner. Equipment made by: Thomson Martin, many thanks for your prompt reply. I have no repaired the PSU in the thompson, but it was working fully before I moved it to the triax system. No, it was working before you disconnected it and let it cool down. That invariably shows up any pre-existing PSU fault. I wouldn't trust the Thomson so don't rely on it for testing. I did as you suggested and get a signal from SAT1 into my non sky+ pace box, but SAT2 from the faceplate gives me no signal at all - most of the time. It occasionally goes up slightly. I am now guessing that I need to check the connection at the LNB *BUT* am totally confused as to why I would get a decent signal on SAT2 when its plugged into the thompson sky+ box (albeit with hardly any strength). Would you also rule out the LNB connections as the next thing to try? I recommend you disconnect the Loft Box altogether. Use two threaded couplers to connect the cables from the LNB to the Downlink and Uplink cables going to the wall plate. If that works, with the Pace box, it proves that everything connected so far is OK. (No response) I have recently installed a wall socket "iec" type for a wall mount TV which will be controlled by magic eye from another room having sky box over there. Now the customer have decide to re-locate the TV different wall but in the same room. I cannot re-run the cable as all ceiling is now boarded. It's just not accessible. Is there a wireless device where I can connect to the existing iec socket (there is powerpoint next to it...so no problem as far as the power to remote device is concerned). This wireless device should be capable of audio/video using magic eye. The sky box is not yet installed nor the TV. Please advise. Regards, Shiraz No and if there was it would be illegal to use it. You can't rebroadcast UHF TV signals. The only wireless option would be to connect a Freeview receiver to the socket; connect a videosender TX to the receiver; connect a videosender RX to the TV. That would get Freeview wirelessly to the TV but it's going to look a bit messy. This is why I always advise duplicating sockets in opposite corners of the main room! If you do end up running another cable, use the thin WF65: Hello I am looking to install a new loft aerial to improve the Freeview signal I am receiving. I have already bought cable and connectors from yourself. Please could you advise of the best choice of aerial for highest quality and strength signal in my area? My postcode is EH42 xxx and i use the Craigkelly ( AH, KH) or could possibly use Black Hill (BH) Both transmitters were switched over back in June. I have read your explanation of the Vision V10-040, but I'm unsure if this would be the best option or a specific group aerial i.e. A,B C/D would be the best option for best signal strength and quality? Hi, Richard. The Vision V10-040 should be fine for Craigkelly, which requires a wideband aerial and should be providing you with the strongest signal. You can see the prediction is 39dBuV/m for an aerial mounted outdoors at a height of 10m: <http://www.wolfbane.com/cgi-bin/tvd.exe?DX=M&HT=10&OS=EH42> For an aerial in the loft, knock off at least 3dB and for an aerial lower than 10m knock off another 1dB for every metre reduction in height. Provided that it's still above 30dBuV/m you should get good reception except in the very worst weather with 6" of snow on the tiles. However, I would qualify that by reminding you that loft reception is notoriously unreliable and can be affected by moving the aerial one inch or by moving a metal coathanger in a bedroom below! Please could you recommend the most suitable loft aerial and masthead amp combination you stock? Many thanks Richard You haven't explained why you need a masthead amplifier so all I can do is direct you to read this page: http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/amps.htm (He placed an order. Thanks, Richard. Please let us know how you got on!) Hi. I need to move my Sky+ HD box to the other side of the lounge. Having looked at various websites yours seems to be the most professional and informative so I wish to buy the necessary items from you to do so. The satellite Twin or shotgun cable currently goes direct from my dish, through the wall and unbroken into the Sky box; the cable is not long enough to stretch to where I want it. Right next to the Sky cabling coming through the brick wall is the roof aerial for the freeview box, this too needs extending. As I am decorating I wish to box off the wires where they come into the room using a pattress box and modular wall plates. I propose &endash; As I am unable to make a cavity in the wall I intend to use a 32mm / 45mm pattress box that will fit over the area where the cables come through the wall and wire up the sky / roof aerial cables to the stated modular wall plates. I will then run extension cables from the wall box round the edge of the skirting and under the edge of the carpet (I have a concrete floor - I don't have floorboards they can go under unfortunately). 1. Could you advise if this proposal is correct and I have selected the correct wall plates? If not which ones do I need to buy? It's mainly a personal choice dependent on several factors. You have chosen modular plates. If a cable is coming straight through a wall, I would choose a plate with a straight-through 'F' connector, such as our S122-327 on this page: http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/wall_plates.htm#plates See http://www.satcure.co.uk/useful/navigation.htm 2. Does the C12843 4 Gang wall Plate fit a standard pattress box ie do the screw holes align? Or do you sell the necessary pattress box? (I cannot see them on your site &endash; if so I want a white one) All the plates on our web site are standard UK sizes. We have a single white patress box 32mm deep: We can probably get others, on request, but it would delay the order by a day or two. 3. Do you sell the necessary cables with connectors already attached so I can connect my Sky+ HD box and freeview box to the wall plate? And if so do you sell them in white and made to measure? Yes, we offer a choice of cables, colours and connectors, either fitted or separate, on two separate web pages. If you can't find the length that you want, choose the next size up and type explicit instructions in the "Notes" window of the shopping cart. If you can't find the exact combination of plugs, choose the nearest and add a note. http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page7.htm#rfleads http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page8.htm#WF100cutSingle We also offer twin WF100 and WF65. Custom cables take longer to supply and are not returnable. If you have other specific technical questions, I'll be happy to direct you to the answer. Hi Martin, a neighbour has a 20 year old analogue receiver to watch eurosport. It is not working properly and I suggested replacing it with a digital. Oh, can you get Eurosport on "digital"? I thought it was available only with German commentary. I need a new lnb (from you) as hers is 10ghz only, and a new receiver. I have seen some receivers that seem to have limited options with regards to setting up satellites and channels. I am a bit confused with the Freesat/FTA receivers in your shop. Are Freeview receivers set-up specifically for the 28.2e sats? No, Freeview is terrestrial requiring an aerial. You mean "Freesat" and the answer is mostly "yes", although most models can also be used as FTA receivers. Can I use the Manhattan Plaza DS-100 for the 19.2 satellites? I don't see why not, although I don't have a FTA receiver myself. There are certain to be reviews and comments from users if you do a Google search or look at the various discussion forums. am wanting to fit a motorised dish so i can get football do you have any advice on the best working dish an receiver for about £300 thanks loll. loll a. Sorry, I don't know much about football except that, if you want to watch Premiership matches, the subscription is quite expensive. You would have to decide which matches you want to watch, find out which companies will be broadcasting from which satellite(s) and determine which (if any) suits your budget. When you've decided on that, you'll be able to determine what dish size you'll need and also any special requirements for the receiver. (For example, if you want to watch football from the Greek Nova company, you'll need a Nova receiver and a subscription card to suit.) The simplest way is undoubtedly to subscribe to Sky. I was interested in the tvlink loftbox system (or similar) and wondered if you could give some advice and/or a list of parts required so that I can place an order. Thanks in advance, Nick Hi, Nick. This should achieve what you want: or this: Great! Thanks for the quick reply. I am probably going to order the loftbox that consolidates the aerial/sky into a single cable - Can you answer a few more? Does the loftbox need mains power? Yes, as stated on each Loft Box page. How much is the loftbox? Prices for Loft Box plus accessories are listed on the individual Loft Box pages. Do I need wallplates at each of the bedroom TVs or can I just stick a magiceye on the end of the cable? A Loft Box combines the signals so you require a decombiner plate or diplexer/triplexer in each room. Can I sketch my intentions and email them to you for comment? No need. Use the Loft Box diagram provided for the particular Loft Box that you choose. Probably too much trouble.0 Hi, I currently have a Philex SL4X box in the loft piping signals around the house. It has a terrestrial arial, DAB aerial and LNB connection. It has 3 additional outputs to bedrooms in addition to the main TV and sky box (downstairs). Good quality cable (double screened) is used throughout the house for the hard-wiring, place is a 4 bed semi, cable lengths are as direct to the rooms as possible. System was working fine when on analogue - Sky TV was in all rooms and analogue also looked ok. Have now tried to upgrade to digital TV in bedrooms. Signals are very weak. Aerial has been tested by connecting it directly to the three bedroom TVs and the digital TVs work perfectly, strong signal. However, connecting the aerial to the loft box, then up and back down through the sky box, the digital TV signal deteriorates. I am guessing that this distribution system may not handle digital TV signals too well, or the run to/from the sky box are reducing the signal. If this is the case, do you know of a good replacement product for the distribution system that will allow me get the sky signal AND good digital aerial signal to all the required rooms, and also allow one room to control the sky box via a magic eye? I can send you a pictorial schematic of my setup if that helps? Thanks in advance Saz Hi, Saz. Your system can't tell whether the signal is analogue or digital and it makes no difference. There's no such thing as an SL4X so I assume you mean an SLx4 aerial amplifier. This is not classed as a "Loft Box". I'm not clear on exactly how you've connected it but this page shows how to connect a SkyLink compatible amplified splitter to get Sky and Freeview in every room: http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/split.htm The aerial signal is fed to the Sky Digibox and from there to the amplifier feeding other rooms. Be sure to set the Sky RF output to a UHF channel that is not used by a Freeview multiplex, otherwise you'll get "snowy" Sky pictures and/or Freeview picture breakup (or no signal at all on some Freeview channels). I bought some 304254 C13846 TR96GA single F type from you and am now installing. I have looked at http://www.satcure.com/tech/fconn.htm and this is very expicit for F connectors but the link you sent for the wall plate http://www.satcure.com/accs/page15b.htm does not seem so show the equivalent connections. The diagram on the actual unit shows cutting back to leave 6.5mm of inner wire core which presumably is inserted into the pin right inside the unit and screwed in. Yes but don't over tighten the screw. It's easy to fracture the wire so it snaps afterwards. This happened to me 6 weeks after I fitted the plate! Took some time to locate the cause of "intermittent signal". It was a right pain to strip the cable a second time, with the wires already shortened and plastered into the wall. See this page: http://www.satcure.com/tech/wall_plates.htm#modular I have added more photos for you! Then the diagram shows another 6.5mm but does not state what this is. Is it: A: The white plastic insulation AND metal foil shield AND braided copper wires Yes. Simply remove 7 mm of outer sheath. Also, in the outter clamp in the unit presumably this is clamped onto the outer plastic casing (with the braided wires pulled back)? No, remove the outer casing. (You could do it your way but I think that the clamp would crush the cable too much. It needs to remain circular in cross section. But feel free to experiment with a spare bit of cable before committing yourself.) Thank you for asking. I should really have taken more photos earlier, then you wouldn't have needed to. Please accept my apologies. We do try our best to provide complete information! Don't forget to fill in our feedback form to get your £1 discount voucher for your next order. Would you be able to repair or get a new board for me. All capacitors look ok (no domed tops)so i dont know what to check next. Thanks Chris N. Hi, Chris. We don't handle Blade Media products but we can supply the components if you tell us the exact part numbers or specifications. PSU failure is often caused by capacitors and easy to fix. See http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/low_ESR_capacitors.htm If you don't want to DIY to save money, you could send your receiver to Michael for repair: http://www.digifixltd.co.uk (No response) Naveen M. Hi, Freeview terrestrial requires a connection to an aerial, not a dish. However, if you have a spare dish connection, you could connect a FreeSAT receiver. See http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/freeview.htm (No response) karen h. Hi, Karen. If the cable was short-circuited during the assault, the receiver may have been damaged. Test it on a known working dish system to check. I suggest you repair or replace the entire cable and keep it out of reach of the dog or run it in conduit to protect it. LNB cable can usually be joined successfully, provided you do it correctly. See (No response) I have just bought a toshiba 42sl863b tv (yet to be delivered) I will be mounting this on a wall it has integral freeviewHD. I want to connect it to a Manhattan Digital satellite receiver Plaza XTM which has the following :- UHF input and outlet,s/p dif, 2 scarts, audio L & R outputs, composite video output and a RS-232 socket, I also want to connect it to a Panasonic DVD recorder that does have an HDMI socket, I also want to connect it to my pc that does not have an HDMI socket nor does it have a spare VGA port nor a DVI port but it does have a router connected to it with spare LAN ports. Please advise me on the following :- how do I connect the tv to the Manhattan, I can obviously connect the dvd player using an HDMI cable to the tv, I can connect the PC wirelessly but I have to buy a dongle that fits into the back of the tv, but I have heard that if playing files from the pc the picture is not as good as that if connected using cables, according to the manual (downloadable from the Toshiba website) I can connect the PC via a LAN cable CAT6 I believe, which do you recommend. The PC however is upstairs and the new tv is downstairs so to route the cable it would have to go through the wall to the outside of the house, down the wall and then back through the wall to the inside and there is no other way for this cable to go so would have to be in the region of about 20M, also I do not want a shed load of cables snaking across the wall to the tv, so I believe you have wall plates that these cables can terminate to and connect to the tv with short cables. These wall plates I can put behind the tv so no cables are showing. My PC does have a blu ray reader in it, can I play blu ray discs and show them on the tv via this CAT6 cable. Obviously I will have to determine which cables and which wallplates etc to buy to complete the installation do you carry all that is required please list and I will purchase asap. Sorry for the long email. Regards Ken Hi, Ken. Thank you for your recent cable order. Unfortunately, I have no knowledge of PCs or Toshiba TV sets. I recommend you post your information in a relevant discussion forum. Be sure to use question marks to make your questions stand out. (No response) i have just got freesat, aftr changing a fauty humax bfreesat box for a samsung s7800 unit, it now appears that i have a polraisation issue. I have a quatro LNB installed with 4 downlinks to an atiference 16 way multiswitch. This in turn outputs to each room in the house, originally with only 1 coax to each triplex plate, I have now also installed a couple of quad plex plates to allow 2 satellite tuners to be used. it is at this point that the samsung only sees vertical polarisation, Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. Regards Ian B. Hi, Ian. I'm so sorry for the tardy reply. My flight was delayed by weather, causing me to miss a connecting flight so I had to spend a night in Athens. I assume you've read our LNB page so you understand that a universal LNB (or multiswitch) requires up to 14 volts to select vertical polarisation and 15 or above to select horizontal. My guess is that you are losing a fraction of a volt in the filter incorporated in the new plate. Normally this wouldn't matter but if the Samsung S7800 is putting out a rather low voltage for "horizontal", then that would explain the problem. The Humax Freesat receivers have a menu option to boost this voltage. If the Samsung is the same, you can probably fix the problem easily. Otherwise, revert to a Humax and set the LNB voltage to its high setting. I have been a Satcure customer in the past and the wiring in my house was carried out after purchasing your "Piping TV Around the House" ebook. At present, everything is being fed from a large triax dish with a quatro LNB fed into a TMS55 launch amp and TMS 5X16 distribution. Each room has a triax wall plate. The rooms with the sky plus have a Triax 304114 plate and the other rooms have a triax triplex wall plate but any of these can be changed to what I need. After replacing the dish 3 times due to it being ripped off the wall in the high winds, I want to replace the system with 2 60cm dishes with quad LNB on each. I can see easily how to send the LNB signals to the sky boxes and the magic eye links stay the same as they are. My problem is that I now want to install a digital aerial to send a signal to each room as most of our Tvs have freeview built in to them. Could you tell me what I will need in the way of diplexers/triplexers/loftboxes etc to do this properly. I have drawn a diagram of my present wiring on the next page. OK, got it. Please also see my previous reply. There is no such thing as a "Digital aerial". This is repeated many times on our web site and others and I want to stress it again. See http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/best_aerial.htm Your aerial should be connected to the aerial input of your multiplexer. Its signals will then be present at all outlets. If you want to use the aerial signal in any specific room, fit a decombiner plate that includes a UHF TV socket - usually labelled "TV". I think that covers it but, if not, feel free to ask a specific question under the same ticket number. This is a new house; the electrician will do most of the installation on a labour only basis. I recommend NOT using an electrician to install coaxial cable. Use an installer who is familiar with coaxial cable. Let him do it after the electrical wiring is installed so he can keep the coaxial away from it. (Qualified Electricians are undoubtedly good at their own job but, in my experience, very few understand how to install coaxial cables correctly.) We have freeview and want to change to freesat.Have panasonic tx-l37GI0B with HD/SAT and want to buy dish,LNB and PVR from your shop but be pleased to receive your recs on equipment to use. Thought we may need 70cm round dish and LNB for upto 4 receivers around house. Want mainly to view astra`2 and maybe hotbird to start and progress later.Dish wall mounted.Be pleased to receive any info. Regards Eric eric b. Hi, Eric. Unfortunately, we don't sell a "panasonic tx-l37GI0B" so I'm not familiar with it but I assume it's a TV set with integral Freesat. Cornwall is slightly outside some of the main Astra footprints so you might benefit from a slightly larger-than-normal dish to minimise signal loss in very bad weather. For Astra-2 + Hotbird you'll certainly need a larger dish. I use an 80cm dish near Manchester. For 4 single-input receivers a quad-output LNB will suffice but you'll need an OCTO if any of those receivers is a twin-tuner PVR. Also please read this page :- and this should help: sorry, I can't locate it right now. did the filename include the ticket number? as I need to get rid of my 1.2 metre triax dish which keeps getting ripped of the wall in high winds. I said that I wanted to replace it with two 60cm mesh dishes with quad LNBs fitted to them and asked for advice on what I would need. What I didn't ask was can I still run my TMS55 launch amp and TMS 5X16 distribution using a Quatro LNB on a 60CM dish or will this dish be too small. Unfortunately, your information is too vague so all I can tell you is: "it depends where you are in the UK and which satellites you want to receive". We recommend going one size larger on whatever is "standard" dish size but it all depends on what rain margin you want. The main problem I have had is that the large triax dish is not mesh which means every time we suffer from high winds, it takes the full force of the wind and gets ripped off the wall. I am currently on my third dish and am fed up of replacing it. Only a C-Band mesh dish would make any difference to the wind resistance. A fine mesh dish - or a perforated dish (small, circular holes) makes no difference at all. I am looking to put my sky + HD box in a cupboard and use the magic eye for changing channels etc I have tried this to no effect I cannot get the eye to light up ? I have the black sky tv link I do not want to connect to another tv Is this possible Please advise Many thanks Ernie See http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/tvlink2.htm (No response) Hi, I am about to have a new Sky dish fitted by a Sky engineer. It will be a Sky Installer. Sky likes to call them "engineers" but most of them have no engineering qualifications. My current cable is 4or 5 year old CT63 cable. Can I ask please if you would recommend me upgrading to WF100 cable? It's a personal choice. Please refer to our cable page: I am also considering WF 125 cable but is your site saying this isn't advisable? No. It's a personal choice. Please refer to our cable page: (Cable would be a 5m run from Dish to Sky box). That's minimal. Any double-screened cable will do. I have also spoken to Clearer Audio and they have advised me to use their Clearer Audio Copper-line Alpha Coaxial cable but if this is a substantial cable do you think the gains of the high quality cable might be offset by its weight and thickness? What gains? You can't use audio cable for an LNB connection. Please refer to our cable page: http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/cable.htm (No response. Now I have a vision of him connecting up his LNB with gold-plated "oxygen-free" loudspeaker cable!) Would really appreciate some help if at all possible. I have a sky+ box in the living room and can watch this via magic eye plus cables in the kitchen. My original sky+ remote (green buttons revision 6) enables me to change channels etc in the kitchen. It is getting old now and is needing to be replaced. I have bought a number of remote controls (programmed them to work ok - they are all sky+ revision 9) and they do not work the magic eye although they all work the box when in the lounge. I also have an HD box in the lounge and can watch that in the kitchen and have bought additional HD remote controls and they can operate the HD box via the magic eye when in the kitchen. Question is any idea why my sky+ remotes I have bought do not operate via magic eye but are ok when next to the box in the lounge whilst I have no problems with my original sky+ remote control? Spoke to the guy who installed this set up and he said that some remotes simply don't work with the magic eye. Is this true? do I need to get a revision 8 sky + remote? As far as I can see the magic eye works perfectly so no issue there. Thanks in advance, any help much appreciated. Regards Richard j. Hi, Richard. This is very rare. I've had very very few reports like this. It's probably an incompatibility caused by component tolerances. It just happens that your new remotes are biassed one way and the Digibox the other way. The answer might be to replace the Digibox but it may be that there's a problem with the connecting cable, wall socket or connectors. I would first try a temporary length of new cable and see if it makes a difference. Cut it at least 1 metre longer or shorter than the original, because some Pace Sky+ Digiboxes seem to be affected by cable length. It's a pity you couldn't read the make and model number of yours. If your old remote is faulty, you might consider repairing it so it lasts till your Digibox dies. http://www.your-book.co.uk/remote.htm Thanks for reading, Paul B. The C13897 is internally identical to the Triax 304109 shown here. http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/wall_plates.htm#decombiner Original Discussion Hi, I am looking for an isolated and screened wall socket - does such thing exist and are you able to source it? I am looking to upgrade the wall sockets in my flat to screened ones, but I would really prefer them to be isolated as I use a communal aerial, unless you think this would be unnecessary? Many thanks, Mike Hi, Mike. You haven't stated what sort of socket so I can't answer your question. Please specify: With a fully screened plate, it is not possible to isolate the screen itself - or at least I've never seen it done. As your communal aerial signal should be coming from a central distribution unit, which should be bonded to the building earth, I don't see any need to isolate it. What sort of danger were you anticipating? You could isolate your connection completely by making a decoupled cable and adding a decoupler, too. Together they would isolate both the outer screen and the inner core. See:- http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/decoupled_cable.htm and http://www.satcure.com/tech/decoupler.htm Best Wishes, Martin Apologies, I somehow forgot to add it was a white single female tv socket I was looking for. I haven't seen an isolated screened socket before, but I did see a tv/fm one where only the tv socket was un-isolated, so this made me presume you must be able to get an isolated and screened one. Presumably the caps would be within the isolation box? I would be concerned about any potential dangers from other residents appliances; either feeding static or, if faulty, dangerous voltages into the aerial feed - this is my understanding of why isolated sockets are used in communal aerial buildings? Also, since I don't own the flat I thought it would be best to replace like for like. Thanks, Mike Hi, Michael. I've checked and, unfortunately, none of our suppliers has such a plate. I've had a quick search but the only online suppliers I can find, consistently fail to specify whether their sockets are screened or isolated. I'm afraid I'll have to pass it back to you. (No response) I have a Sky minidish which is probably 10 years old and for the last 3 years have been using it with a Grundig GUFSAT01HD digital box. The dish LNB is a Skyware SX1019/S. For about the last year we were losing the BBC signal for a few seconds at about 18.58 each day, which seemed to coincide which the switchover from BBC London to Look East. For the last three months or so the loss of signal has been much more random, occurring any time of day. I am advised by Grundig that my LNB probably needs updating, Do you agree and if so can you recommend a replacement. Bernard M. Hi, Bernard. I think it unlikely that the LNB is at fault but it's one of a list of possibilities and you'll have to eliminate them, one by one. See information about signal problems: Our Sky LNBs are on this page: (No response) Hi, I had the satalite people out today as I live in a communial block of flats that has a communial sky dish. I would like to switch to freesat. Any way he said no problem and quoted me £269.00. He told me I need a sky HD combiner unit, as I have one feed coming from an amplifier to my flat. He also said I need a sky hd diplexer. I know I can get this equipment myself, but that have confused me with technical meanings and not simplifiered things. The first thing I need is the wall plate, because I have 1 feed I need it to connect to two feed. Sat 1, Sat 2, Tv & Fm. Do you do one of these. Please use question marks (?) so that the questions stand out amongst the information. We do sell wall plates. See our "Wall Plates" page, here: The second thing I need is this Sky digital HD combiner, which I know has to be connected to the amp. What I dont understand is the amplifier has 1 feed coming out, how do I connect this up, I have never heard of a "Sky digital HD combiner". Perhaps you mean a Stacker/destacker? could you show me a combiner. If you are referring to a stacker/destacker, the combiner and decombiner units are part of the kit. Because he said I will still have one feed coming up to my flat. Then two feeds from the wall plate. That would make sense for a stacker/destacker. Read the information on the page (link above). (No response) i want to run 2 cables from my sat dish to the receiver:- a.) 30 to 40 metres run b.) over half outside Could you recommend a good quality cable with minimum loss. Is a dual cable suitable or would I be better off with 2 singles That's a personal choice. Possibly but, unfortunately, I don't recognise your description and I don't know of a "sg2100". Have a look at our web site hardware section and see if you recognise it. My location is: New Zealand Hi. I want to send my sky satelite TV signal to three bedrooms via wireless. Can you help and what is the cost? John S. Hi, John. You haven't stated what format signal you want to distribute. Obviously it depends on what output ports your receiver has (RF, HDMI, Scart, RCA phono) and what picture/sound quality you want. Also on whether you need remote control of the receiver. As I have no idea what videosenders are available in your country, you'll have to do your own research. (No response) Hello. I am currently running ordinary Sky TV (non HD) from my (Amstrad DRX550 sky box) to my main tv in the house and to my bedroom via a magic eye. I have arranged to have Sky HD to be installed on the 12/01/2012. I am unaware of the make and model of the box that will be given to me until I receive it on the 12/01/12. My question is this.... What equipment (leads, connections, magic eyes, cable type, amplifiers, boosters etc, etc) do I need if I want to run a total of 4 televisions from the one sky HD box. Three of the televisions are full HD compatible. I take it that I would require a magic eye for each television but where I get confused is the connectors and amplifing boxes etc?? Can you please help me with this? If you need to know the make/model of the televisions please let me know. Many thanks Craig F. No problem. The page you need is here: Since the Sky Digibox RF output provides an ordinary SD (Standard Definition) analogue output with mono audio, your TVs don't need to be HD compatible but they DO need to have analogue tuning. If you want to display HD then that's a different game altogether and you'd need to consider installing Ethernet (CAT5) cable, HDMI splitter, HDMI cables etc. In addition. (The coaxial cable would still be needed for the "magic eye" function. http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page18.htm (No response) I have an old Sky dish. Our Terrestrial reception is very poor so we are using the sky dish (Duo LNB) No such thing. Maybe it's a quad-output LNB or a (very rare) twin-output LNB? See http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/lnb.htm#twin straight to a single Panasonic TV that has a decoder built in - so we receive Freesat to a single TV in the lounge. I would like to spread the word around the house 5 other rooms. Can you advise? Unfortunately, I don't understand. Please explain exactly what you mean. I assume you mean "signal" not "word" so which signal? Alternatively, explain what you want to achieve - for example "we want the ability to watch the same channel in 5 rooms as the one being viewed in the lounge". Or "we want the ability to watch a different Freeview channel in 5 rooms". Or whatever you mean. Also explain any limitations such as routing cables, budget, picture/sound quality etc. There are multiple possibilities so don't skimp on the detail. Also, why is your terrestrial reception very poor? Do you want to fix it and have more choice? At TN19 xxx you should get excellent Freeview reception from Heathfield North with a Vision V10-040 "Focus" aerial (preferably above the roof). See http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/best_aerial.htm Would there be an way to provide DTV (freeview) to an area of rural Ireland just 10 miles from UK/NI. SAORVIEW is Ireland's first free digital television service. However it is for high populated areas first and at a ¤100+ cost for setup. I'm launching a wifi network in the north west of Ireland with 90ft+ mast network but I am considering installing digital boxes with inc DTV/VOIP/Cluster recording options. Is there a way to redistribute Freeview? Ive asked the Irish govt about tv licence regarding IPTV and its still licence exempt. EU broadcasting Commission (SWISS! based) is pushing for a IPTV licensing to be incorporated. Kind regards DAVID M. Sorry, this is outside my field of knowledge. HI Martin, Following on from the PM on the AV forum the cable may be marked as CTF100? Does that mean anything to you? I'm afraid i do not have the manufacturer.
I have a faulty amstrad drx280 box which keeps blowing fuses and the internal fuse has blown but not been replaced. On the power supply is a chip with approx 8 contacts 2 of these are melted is this power supply salvageable?

Hi, I have bought a quad LNB for an old Sky Channel Master Dish. However the Mk3 and Mk4 adaptors that came with it do not fit the arm on the dish. The spigot on the adaptor needs to be 21mm x 9mm in order to fit inside the end of the arm. Is it possible to buy an adaptor that would fit the LNB to the arm?

1) Within the living room, I am attempting to physically split out one of the cables so that I can get a Digital TV feed into another TV that I am putting in another room (Gym Room - currently has no TV points but is on the other side of the wall). I crudely attempted this using a simple Y splitter, which for obvious reasons did not work. As such could I use something like a "Global DIP1 decombining Diplexer" to split the signal, with no impact to the sky, i.e. sky HD can be on (with two feeds) and gym TV (with digital TV feed) can be on with no relationship between both?

I recently bought a vision link and associated cable and fittings from you and successfully completed the connections from my Sky box to a second TV. However, although the Sky remote changes {Sky?} channels on the second TV via the magic eye it does not work the volume controls. Should it, and if so what have I done wrong?

Any suggestions please?

Hi,
I have a single sky+ box in the lounge which is connected (via scart) to the television. I wish to take the 2nd output from this sky+, feed it into the loft. In the loft, I would like to get some device that will distribute this sky+ feed, and a feed from a terr. antenna into 2x bedroom TVs.

Hi guys, i hope you'll be able to help, i have a bm7000s satellite box it has a faulty PSU board (flashing red light and cant factory reset by holding menu), i know its the PSU as ive tried a different board and it worked.
I currently have sky TV in my home but would like to add free view to my 2nd tv. Can I connect a freeview set top box to the satellite connection in the wall using an F type to aerial connector. NOTE: the sky box is connected to a similar wall connection in another room - would that cause a problem
My puppy has chewed through my satellite aerial cable (indoors). I have fitted a connector on both ends. My freesat box has all channels as before, but says 'No signal'. Any suggestions?

Hello Martin
Can you let me know if the Quadplex modular wall plate (C13897) will work with an existing UHF/SAT diplexer (Global). I just want to utilise the SAT2 port for a sky+ transition and I'm not bothered in FM/DAB reception.
