How do I install a Satellite Receiver in my loft?

IMPORTANT: When a power supply is used to feed an amplifier upstairs, any wall plate MUST be a non-isolated type, otherwise the aerial signal will get through but the DC power won't. An isolated (decoupled) plate is often marked with a capacitor symbol -||- so if yours has this (or obviously has capacitors fitted inside) don't use it unless you short-circuit the capacitors. In addition, any "TV plug" between the PSU and amplifier must be soldered to the cable, otherwise a poor or intermittent connection is likely to interrupt viewing now or in the future,

SAFETY NOTICE: Electrical equipment which is installed in a loft or roof space should, wherever possible, be mounted on a brick or concrete surface. There have been rare instances of equipment catching fire so every precaution should be taken to prevent spread of fire. Powered equipment needs good ventilation and should be kept away from flammable materials such as cardboard, paper, plastic etc. Where a separate power supply is used, mount it on a wall with good ventilation. On no account lie it on a carpet or rug.

How do I install a Satelite Receiver in my loft?

You can install a Sky Digibox in the loft space and control it from other rooms by fitting any of our Remote Extender "magic eyes". The amplifier must be a "SkyLink compatible type (F120 or F140 recommended) which passes the remote control signals back to the Digibox RF Outlet 2.

You will need a mains power socket in the loft.

You must ensure that the Digibox does not become hot in summer.

You must follow the instructions that we supply for turning the RF2 outlet on and make sure that all cable is double-screened and terminated correctly.

Questions

Q. Does the aerial signal go to all rooms as well?

A. Yes it does

Q. Can I connect a Freeview receiver to each TV set?

A. Yes you can but you should read our "Freeview Bible".

Q. Can I use wall plate sockets?

A. Yes but ensure they are the "DC pass" type and not "isolated". (We sell only DC pass types).

Q. Can I install two satellite receivers in the Loft and control them both?

A. Yes but with the proviso that one must be a SKY+ model since that uses a different remote control. You will need a "GLO73 Plus Combiner".

IMPORTANT

You should be aware that mains-powered equipment installed in the loft can be a fire hazard which may affect your insurance! A loft can become very hot in summer, which adds to the risk. If you install equipment in the loft, please take all appropriate steps to ensure that a fire can not spread, including:

  • Install it in a flame-resistant container with good ventilation.
  • Keep it away from flammable materials.
  • Ensure that it can't accidentally be covered by blankets etc. tossed hurriedly into the loft.
  • Ensure that it is properly fused and connected through a Residual Current Breaker or other safety device.
  • Ensure that it is correctly earthed if an earth connection is provided

Remote extender "magic eyes" and masthead amplifiers need to be powered via the coaxial cable. If the "TV" plugs aren't fitted correctly, the connection will be intermittent and you'll have problems. See a short movie of how to fit a plug correctly by clicking HERE.
