No satellite signal in sunshine Signal that fails in sunlight has two common causes: 1. Faulty LNB (usually a bad solder joint inside on the PCB). 2. Bad connection to the 'F' connector, caused by corrosion. Fitting a new LNB is the expensive way to fix it - for a while. The problem can be avoided by applying silicone grease to the 'F' connection - especially the bare copper wire. The grease excludes moisture and air, which cause corrosion. Testing You can test for an LNB problem by aiming a stream of water at it, with a hose pipe, when the problem occurs. If the problem immediately goes away, you have proven that the LNB or connection is at fault. Nonsense? Professionals choose to ridicule silicone grease and I'm not sure why but I suspect it's because: 1. They simply can't be bothered to apply grease 2. They think 1cc of grease is hugely expensive (it isn't) 3. They don't believe it works (test it like I did) 4. They don't believe it's necessary (it is if you want guaranteed reliability) 5. They want the connection to fail just outside warranty so they earn money from a call out 6. They hate me and don't want to "line my pockets". Suggestion 5 is rather naughty but I know there are installers who think like this. When I worked in a trade warehouse, there was an installer who refused to buy self-amalgamating tape; instead, he told me, he used PVC tape because it allowed moisture to penetrate and guaranteed him a call-out within a year (he gave only a 6 month guarantee). Thankfully, very few installers are like this and I think they simply can't be bothered to test silicone grease because they see no advantage for themselves. Also see No Satellite Signal at Night |
